The short version

Where the cabins are

Near the hamlet of Owls Head in the Town of Bellmont, New York, about ten road miles south of Malone village, at the northern edge of the Adirondack Park. From Malone you take County Route 25 south; from the south you come up NY 30 past Meacham Lake. Plattsburgh and Lake Placid are about an hour and a quarter, Albany and Syracuse three and a half hours, New York City about five and a half. A car or SUV is essential; there is no public transport to the property.

Coming from Canada? The Trout River crossing on NY 30 is closed to U.S.-bound traffic for reconstruction until about May 2028. Use Fort Covington or Champlain (both open 24 hours), or Chateaugay in daytime hours. The crossings, in detail →

By direction

The roads in by direction

From New York City, Albany and Saratoga Springs, the Northway (I-87) does most of the work. Leave it at exit 30 for NY 73 through Keene to Lake Placid, then NY 86 to Paul Smiths and NY 30 north past Meacham Lake; or stay on I-87 to Plattsburgh and take NY 190 and US 11 west.

From Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, I-81 runs north to Watertown, and US 11 carries on north-east through Gouverneur, Canton and Potsdam to Malone; from Utica, NY 12 and NY 812 join the same road. From Burlington, Boston and Hartford, you cross Lake Champlain on US 2 at Rouses Point and follow US 11 west. The last miles from Malone are County Route 25 south.

From Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto and Quebec City the route depends on the border crossing, and while Trout River is closed to U.S.-bound traffic each Canadian city page names the crossing to use. Every city page gives the road miles, the typical time, the alternatives, the airport option and what to expect on the last miles.
