From Toronto to the cabins
About 308 road miles, about five hours plus the border crossing. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.
Toronto is 308 road miles from the cabins, about five hours of driving plus the border, and roughly two-thirds of it is Highway 401. Kingston is the natural halfway stop, and past it three bridges cross the St. Lawrence into New York. This page covers getting out of the city, the service centres on the 401, how to choose a bridge, the snow-squall stretch between Brighton and Kingston, the train-and-rental option if you do not own a car, and a Friday plan that has you in Malone with the groceries before dark.
Getting out of Toronto
From downtown, the mapped route takes the Don Valley Parkway north to the 401's eastbound express lanes, which rejoin the main highway east of the city. From there the 401 runs east through Durham Region, past Whitby and Clarington, and the first hour ends at Port Hope. How long that first hour takes depends on the city's traffic, so look at Ontario 511 before you set off. The province's traveller information service shows road conditions and closures, construction, more than 900 highway cameras and, in winter, forecast driving conditions and where the snowplows are.
The 401 from Toronto to Kingston
East of Port Hope the highway crosses Northumberland County, through Cramahe, then Quinte West, Belleville, Greater Napanee and Loyalist Township, and on into Kingston. Kingston is about two and a half hours from downtown Toronto, and it makes the obvious break, with the halfway point behind you and the river ahead.
Past Kingston the 401 follows the St. Lawrence to Prescott, about another hour, and the usual crossing is the Ogdensburg–Prescott International Bridge, reached from the exit signed for Highways 16 and 416, Johnstown, the USA and Ottawa. From the U.S. side, NY 37, NY 420 and US 11 take you to Malone, and County Route 25 runs south to the cabins; the last few miles are town roads, so follow the host's directions, and see getting to the cabins for why.
| Stretch | Roads | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Toronto to Port Hope | Don Valley Parkway, Highway 401 east | About an hour, more in traffic |
| Port Hope to Kingston | Highway 401 past Trenton, Belleville and Napanee | About an hour and a half |
| Kingston to the bridge | Highway 401, Highway 16 | About an hour |
| Ogdensburg to Malone | NY 812, NY 37, NY 420, US 11 | About an hour and 20 minutes, plus the border |
| Malone to the cabins | County Route 25 south, then town roads | About 20 minutes |
That adds up to about five hours of driving. With a coffee stop, a lunch stop and the border, plan on six.
Service centres on the 401
Ontario's ONroute service centres sit right on the highway, so you can stop without leaving it, and the operator lists every one as open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Going east, on your side of the highway:
- Port Hope, about an hour out. Canadian Tire Gas+ with pumps open around the clock and full service from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., a Tim Hortons open 24 hours, Starbucks, Burger King, Popeyes, Booster Juice, a convenience store and EV chargers.
- Trenton South, about 7 kilometres west of Trenton, with the address in Brighton. The same gas, a 24-hour Tim Hortons, Subway and A&W, EV chargers and a pet area.
- Odessa, just west of Kingston. Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes and Starbucks, the gas and EV chargers, and free Wi-Fi.
- Mallorytown South, between Kingston and Brockville, the last ONroute before the exit for the Ogdensburg bridge. Tim Hortons, A&W and New York Fries, the gas and EV chargers.
Coming home on Sunday, the westbound centres are Mallorytown North, Napanee, Trenton North and Newcastle, in that order.
Choosing a bridge from Toronto
Three bridges cross the St. Lawrence between Kingston and Cornwall, and from Toronto each one works. All three border crossings are open 24 hours in both directions. Ignore any map that sends you on into Quebec and south through Trout River on NY 30: that port has been closed to traffic entering the United States since June 1, 2026, with its rebuild due to finish around May 2028.
| Bridge | Leave the 401 at | Car toll | After the bridge | Compared with Ogdensburg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thousand Islands | Highway 137, Hill Island | US$4.00 or C$5.50 since January 1, 2026 | I-81 south, then US 11 north-east through Gouverneur, Canton and Potsdam | 20 to 30 minutes longer |
| Ogdensburg–Prescott | Highways 16 and 416, Johnstown | US$3.25 or C$4.25 one way | NY 37 along the river to Massena, then NY 420 and US 11 | The main route |
| Three Nations Crossing, Cornwall | Highway 138, Cornwall | C$5.25 or US$3.75 since April 1, 2025 | NY 37 east through Akwesasne and Fort Covington to Malone | About the same time |
The Thousand Islands Bridge
You reach the Hill Island exit a little under three hours from downtown. Of the three U.S. ports, Alexandria Bay is the only one CBP lists with a NEXUS lane into the United States, though the lane is not always open; the Canadian office at Lansdowne also runs NEXUS lanes toward Canada on weekday mornings and late afternoons. The bridge takes E-ZPass, cash and major credit cards in every lane. The cost is the U.S. side: the fastest way on is I-81 south and then US 11, the same road the drive from Watertown follows, and it adds 20 to 30 minutes of driving. In winter it also puts you in the lake-effect belt east of Lake Ontario: the National Weather Service's report on the storm of January 26 to 31, 2026, lists 26 inches at Watertown and nearly 17 at Fort Drum, so check the forecast before you choose this bridge.
The Ogdensburg–Prescott bridge
This is the shortest way and the usual one. In 2026 the bridge authority has it under one-lane traffic control from March 25 through November 21, for maintenance, and asks drivers to allow extra time. The authority describes waits at this crossing as generally non-existent in a normal year, but its notice for the work says to expect delays, so check the live wait before you commit. The stops between the bridge and Malone, including the Remington museum in Ogdensburg and the Seaway's visitor center at Massena, are laid out on the drive from Kingston.
The Three Nations Crossing
Staying on the 401 past Prescott to Cornwall adds about three-quarters of an hour of Ontario highway, then saves it back on the New York side, so the whole trip takes about the same time. Choose it when the Ogdensburg single lane is backed up, or when you would rather keep to the 401 a little longer. The bridge takes Canadian or American money, and a Seaway Transit Card takes 10 percent off the toll.
The papers each person needs, the food and firewood rules and the rest of the border detail are on crossing the border. Both border agencies post live waits for these bridges: U.S. Customs and Border Protection for Alexandria Bay, Ogdensburg and Massena, and the Canada Border Services Agency for Lansdowne, Prescott and Cornwall.
Snow squalls between Brighton and Kingston
In winter, watch the stretch of the 401 between Brighton and Kingston. On January 27, 2026, Environment Canada had a snow squall warning in force for Brighton, Quinte West, Belleville, Prince Edward County, Napanee and Kingston, mainly along and south of the 401, warning that visibility could suddenly drop to near zero at times and that 5 to 10 centimetres could fall in places. Environment Canada's warnings point out that in squalls, changes from clear skies to heavy snow within a few kilometres are common, so a sunny Port Hope tells you nothing about Belleville. If a warning is out, wait it out or slow right down, and check Ontario 511's road conditions and cameras before you commit.
The days are short, too. On Friday, December 18, 2026, the sun sets at the cabins at 4:17 p.m., and dusk is over by 4:51. A 10 a.m. start in December gets you to Malone around 4, with the last miles after sunset. Winter driving covers tires, the emergency kit and the U.S. rules.
Long weekends
The border is busiest on long weekends, and some of them fall on the same day in both countries. Thanksgiving in Canada and Columbus Day in the United States share Monday, October 12, in 2026. Family Day, which Ontario law sets on the third Monday in February, lands on February 15 in 2027, the same Monday as Washington's Birthday. For holiday weekends the CBSA tells travellers to cross early in the morning and expect the Monday to be the busiest day, so drive home on another day if you can.
The train and a rental car
If you live in Toronto without a car, VIA Rail can take you most of the way, but you still need a car for the end: the listings say a car or SUV is essential at the cabins. There are two ways to combine the train and a rental.
To Kingston
VIA gives the average Toronto–Kingston trip as 2 hours 22 minutes, with 94 departures a week. In its fall 2026 timetable, the 8:32 a.m. Toronto–Montreal train is in Kingston at 11:00 and the 11:38 at about 2 p.m. Kingston's station, at 1800 John Counter Boulevard, is staffed, and VIA lists car rental among its services. The station opens at 7 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and closes at 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays. From there you drive the 146 road miles of the Kingston route, about two and three-quarter hours plus the border.
To Cornwall
VIA's Toronto–Montreal trains stop in Cornwall about four hours out of Toronto: in the same timetable the 8:32 a.m. train is there at about 12:45 p.m. and the 11:38 at about 3:45. Cornwall's station, at 1650 Station Road, is unstaffed and opens 60 minutes before a train and closes 30 minutes after one; VIA's page lists taxis, among them Tip Top Veteran Taxi at (613) 932-2727. Enterprise, at 560 Pitt Street, is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to noon, is closed Sunday, offers pick-up, and takes no after-hours returns. From Cornwall the cabins are about 44 road miles over the Three Nations Crossing. Those rental hours make it a midweek plan: a Friday arrival works only on a morning train, and a Sunday return does not work at all. Check the branch's hours when you book.
VIA is changing some corridor schedules from October 25, 2026, so check the timetable for your date.
Flying instead
From Toronto, the airports that make sense for this trip are Montréal–Trudeau and Ottawa, both of which put you on the road with a border crossing still ahead. Ottawa is about 104 road miles from the cabins by the Cornwall bridge, and Montreal 75 to 101 depending on the crossing. Neither of the small airports on the New York side of the river has flights from Toronto: Breeze routes Ogdensburg's daily flights through Raleigh-Durham to Florida from October 2026, and Boutique Air flies from Massena to Boston. Airports near the cabins covers the rental counters, and the drive from Ottawa and the drive from Montreal cover the roads.
A Friday from Toronto
Check-in at all three cabins is after 4 p.m., and the drive is a working day's length, so start in the morning:
- 10:00 a.m. Leave downtown Toronto for the 401 east.
- About 11:00. Coffee at the Port Hope ONroute.
- About 12:45. Kingston for lunch, or the Odessa ONroute just before it.
- About 2:30. Across the Ogdensburg bridge, after the U.S. inspection.
- About 4:00. Malone. Groceries at Price Chopper, open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, and a quick note to the host saying when you will arrive, sent from town.
- About 4:45. At the cabin.
In December, leave an hour earlier to beat the 4:17 sunset. On a summer Friday you can leave after lunch: on June 18, 2027, the sun does not set at the cabins until 8:45 p.m. A 5 p.m. start from Toronto puts you at the door around 11, inside the 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. quiet hours at The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home, so leave in the morning or make Saturday the travel day.
Coming home
Checkout is before 11 a.m. Leaving the cabins at 11 puts you back in Toronto in the early evening, with the border and a stop or two on top of the five hours. All three Canadian border offices on these bridges are open around the clock, so a late start home is not a problem at the line. What you can bring back duty-free depends on how long you were away; the allowances are on crossing the border.
What Ontario guests come for
No review so far comes from a guest who gives Toronto as home. Among reviewers who list an Ontario home town, a Kingston guest came for a July 2024 stay at The Aviator and praised its new-cabin smell and an accommodating host, and an Ottawa guest in March 2023 found the cabin close enough to Titus Mountain to drive back and forth for lunch.
From Toronto, a weekend at the cabins is a long drive for a short stay, so the trips that make the most sense are the ones that use the area. In winter that means skiing Titus, whose base lodge is about 3.5 road miles from the cabins (skiing Titus), or snowmobiling on the C7 corridor nearby (snowmobiling the C7). In summer and fall it means the lakes, the fire-tower hikes and the color (fall foliage). Each of the three cabins sleeps four and has its own hot tub; compare them on the cabins page.
Questions
How long is the drive from Toronto to the cabins?
308 road miles, about five hours of driving plus the border, most of it on Highway 401 east to Prescott, then NY 37, NY 420 and US 11 to Malone. With a coffee stop, lunch in Kingston and the crossing, plan on six hours from downtown Toronto.
Which border crossing is best from Toronto?
The Ogdensburg–Prescott bridge is the main route and the shortest. The Three Nations Crossing at Cornwall takes about the same time overall, which helps while the Ogdensburg bridge runs one lane at a time through November 21, 2026. The Thousand Islands Bridge is the first you reach, and its U.S. port is the only one of the three that CBP lists with a NEXUS lane, though the lane is not always open; it adds 20 to 30 minutes of driving.
Where can we stop on Highway 401?
The ONroute service centres sit on the highway and list themselves as open around the clock: Port Hope, Trenton South, Odessa and Mallorytown South going east, and Mallorytown North, Napanee, Trenton North and Newcastle coming home. The eastbound ones each have Canadian Tire Gas+, a Tim Hortons and EV chargers.
Can we get to the cabins without a car?
Not all the way, because the listings call a car or SUV essential. Take VIA Rail to Kingston, about two and a half hours, and rent a car there, or take a Toronto–Montreal train to Cornwall, about four hours, and rent from Enterprise on Pitt Street. Enterprise in Cornwall is closed on Sundays and takes no after-hours returns, so that option works best midweek.
Do the bridges take Canadian money?
Yes. The Thousand Islands Bridge posts its car toll in both currencies, US$4.00 or C$5.50, and also takes E-ZPass and major credit cards. The Ogdensburg–Prescott bridge posts US$3.25 or C$4.25 one way, and the Seaway International Bridge at Cornwall accepts Canadian or American funds, C$5.25 or US$3.75.
What is the winter drive like from Toronto?
Watch for snow squalls on the 401 between Brighton and Kingston, where Environment Canada had a squall warning out in January 2026, and for lake-effect snow around Watertown if you take the Thousand Islands Bridge. In mid-December the sun sets at the cabins at about 4:17 p.m., so start early. Winter driving covers tires and the kit.
