Getting there

From Syracuse to the cabins

About 189 road miles, about three and a half hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.

Syracuse is 189 road miles from the cabins, about three and a half hours of driving, and the trip comes in two halves: I-81 north past Pulaski and Watertown to the Fort Drum exit, then US 11 north-east through Gouverneur, Canton and Potsdam to Malone. There is no border to cross and only one real decision on the way. The catch is the first half, which crosses the lake-effect snow belt east of Lake Ontario. This page covers the way out of the city in 2026, the stops near the exits, the snow, the slower road through the park, the train and the bus, and a plan for a Friday evening.

Leaving Syracuse in 2026

The I-81 viaduct project has changed the start of this drive. In June 2026 the state finished rebuilding the two interchanges where I-81 meets I-481, one on the south side of the city and one in Cicero. Traffic leaving downtown on the old I-81 now joins the main line northbound in Cicero over a new flyover bridge.

The names are changing too. In September 2026 the Federal Highway Administration approved the formal renaming of I-481, the eastern bypass, as the new I-81, and of the old I-81 between the two interchanges, through downtown, as Business Loop 81. The state said drivers should not expect the signs to change right away and should keep following the existing ones while it plans the switch. In practice: from downtown, follow I-81 North and Watertown; from DeWitt and the east side, take I-481 North. Both put you on the same road north of Cicero. Check 511NY, the state's road information service, before you leave for closures and conditions.

I-81 north to the Fort Drum exit

North of the city, I-81 runs through Mattydale and Cicero to Brewerton, crosses into Oswego County, and passes Central Square and the Town of Parish on the way to Pulaski. It then crosses the Town of Sandy Creek, past the villages of Sandy Creek and Lacona, enters Jefferson County in the Town of Ellisburg, and passes Adams and Adams Center before reaching Watertown. Watertown is 118 road miles from the cabins and Syracuse is 189, so roughly the first 70 miles of the trip are this one interstate.

Stay on I-81 past the Watertown exits. Just north of the city, take the exit for I-781 and Fort Drum, a short spur that ends at US 11 near the post's main gate. That way you never drive through downtown Watertown, and you join US 11 with the city behind you.

That is a little under three and a half hours with no stops. Add a gas and coffee stop and plan on close to four hours from your driveway to the cabin.

The new exit numbers

New York has been renumbering the exits on I-81 to match the mile markers since 2024, starting in Central New York, and the Jefferson County exits are being changed during 2026. The new signs carry the new number at the top and the old number at the bottom. The one that matters on this trip is the Fort Drum exit: old exit 48A becomes exit 162, so directions written before the change still lead to the same ramp.

Stops between Syracuse and Watertown

This half of the drive goes fast, and the useful stops sit within a few minutes of the exits. Byrne Dairy & Deli has four shops near this stretch of I-81, each with gas, a deli counter and Byrne Dairy ice cream, and each listed as open 24 hours:

  • Cicero, at 5798 East Seymour Street, about ten minutes from downtown, if you left with a low tank.
  • Central Square, at 3019 East Avenue, about 20 minutes out. A second shop in the Town of Hastings, at 885 US Route 11, is a few minutes farther off the interstate.
  • Pulaski, the shop Byrne calls Pulaski Rt 81, at 3739 State Route 13, a minute or so off the Pulaski exit and about 35 minutes out. It adds a diesel island, so it is the stop if you need diesel.

Farther north, Stewart's has a shop at 10546 US Route 11 in the village of Adams, a few minutes off the Adams exit. It sells gas, diesel and 91-octane premium without ethanol, and has restrooms, indoor booths and an ice cream counter. Once you are on US 11, the Stewart's at 8722 Noble Street in Evans Mills is a few minutes past the end of I-781, with gas, diesel, coffee and restrooms.

From Evans Mills on, the road is the same one the drive from Watertown follows, and that page lists the shops in Gouverneur, Canton, Potsdam and Brushton and the parks on the river islands in Canton. Malone, the last town, has the supermarkets; groceries and supplies lists what the cabin kitchens already have.

At Watertown, US 11 or NY 3

Watertown is where the drive offers its one real choice. US 11 is the main route, the one the table above follows. Take it after dark, in snow, or whenever the point is to get to the hot tub.

NY 3 through the park

The other way leaves I-81 in Watertown and heads east to Carthage, either on NY 126 or on NY 3 by way of Great Bend, where Stewart's has a shop at 32720 State Route 3. From Carthage, NY 3 runs on to Harrisville, where another Stewart's stands at 81 State Highway 3, and then through Star Lake, past the turn for Wanakena and through the hamlet of Cranberry Lake to Tupper Lake.

In Tupper Lake, Stewart's has a shop at 124 Park Street, on NY 30. A few miles east of the village, NY 30 leaves NY 3 and carries you north past Paul Smiths and Meacham Lake to the county roads near the cabins. Tupper Lake is about 57 road miles from the cabins, and The Wild Center is there if you want a long stop. The last stretch of NY 30 is the road to Meacham Lake, and Paul Smiths is on the Saranac Lake and Paul Smiths page.

From Syracuse this way takes about an hour longer than US 11. Save it for a daylight drive in summer or early fall; on a winter Friday the extra hour falls after sunset.

Lake-effect snow between Syracuse and Watertown

The snow bands that form off the east end of Lake Ontario can set up over Oswego County and southern Jefferson County, which is the stretch of I-81 from Central Square to Adams. Three recent storms in the archive of the National Weather Service office in Buffalo show what this half of the drive can do:

  • December 29, 2025, to January 3, 2026. About five days of lake snow left two to three feet across all of Oswego County and more than four feet in the north of the county, with snow falling at three to five inches an hour at times. The top total, 59 inches, was 3.6 miles south-south-east of Lacona, and the Weather Service listed the I-81 corridor in northern Oswego County among the travel impacts.
  • December 15, 2025. A narrow band, five to ten miles wide, moved north along the I-81 corridor through the afternoon and reached just south of Watertown, near Adams, by evening, with snow falling at one to two inches an hour.
  • February 16 to 18, 2025. A band stayed over Oswego County from late Monday morning to early Wednesday. The top total was 46.3 inches, two miles south-west of Mexico, hazardous travel led to numerous road closures on I-81 in Oswego County from Monday afternoon to Tuesday evening, and upwards of two dozen buildings in the county collapsed under the snow.

Two things follow from those reports. The bands are narrow, so one exit can be white while the next is clear, and they drift north and south over hours, so a band parked over Pulaski at noon may sit over Oswego or Watertown by evening. Before you leave, read the Buffalo office's forecast for Oswego and Jefferson counties and look at 511NY. If a warning is up and a band is sitting on the interstate, leaving a few hours later is often a better plan than driving into it.

The Watertown end of the drive and the Tug Hill above it are on the Watertown page, and winter driving has the tires, the car kit and New York's winter rules.

The long way round in a storm

When a lake-effect warning covers the whole of your travel window, there is an all-interstate way around the snow belt: the Thruway east to Albany, then the Northway north. From the Northway you either leave at exit 30 for the High Peaks roads through Keene, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, or stay on to Plattsburgh and take NY 190 and US 11 west. From Syracuse the High Peaks version adds about two and a half hours and the Plattsburgh version close to three, with Thruway tolls on top. That makes it a choice for a storm that will not move, not for a forecast of a few inches. The drive from Albany describes the Northway half.

Fall color and holiday weekends

The leaves turn up north well before they turn at home. The state's I LOVE NY foliage report, issued every Wednesday afternoon in the fall from the notes of more than 100 volunteer observers, had Malone at 50 percent and near peak in its report for October 7 to 13, 2026, with mostly bright reds and oranges, while Syracuse was at 25 percent. If you wait for the maples on your own street, you may arrive after the best week near the cabins. For timing the trip by the color, see fall foliage in the northern Adirondacks.

On the big holiday weekends the state pauses its temporary construction lane closures. For Labor Day 2026 it pulled them from 6 a.m. on Friday, September 4, to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, though work behind permanent concrete barriers and emergency repairs could go on. Columbus Day falls on Monday, October 12, in 2026 and on Monday, October 11, in 2027, and Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, in 2026. Washington's Birthday, the Presidents' Day holiday, falls on Monday, February 15, in 2027, a three-day weekend for skiing Titus.

Without a car

The train

Amtrak can carry you most of the way, with a rental car for the end. On Amtrak's October 2026 timetable, Empire Service train 280 leaves the Syracuse Regional Transportation Center at 7:02 a.m. every day and reaches Albany-Rensselaer at 10:05 a.m. The Adirondack leaves Albany-Rensselaer at 11:45 a.m. and reaches Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m., and Plattsburgh is about 61 road miles from the cabins. Avis, Budget and Enterprise have counters at the Plattsburgh airport, so book the car, and a ride from the station to the airport, before you go; airports near the cabins has the details.

The way home works with a change at Schenectady, not Albany. The southbound Adirondack leaves Plattsburgh at 2:45 p.m. and is due in Schenectady at 6:38 p.m., and the westbound Lake Shore Limited leaves Schenectady at 7:33 and is due in Syracuse at 10:05 p.m. Ride on to Albany-Rensselaer and you arrive at 7:40, after the Lake Shore Limited has left there at 7:05. It is the last train west that evening; if the Adirondack runs more than about 55 minutes late, the next one is the Maple Leaf the following morning. These are the October 2026 times; check the current timetable before you plan around them.

The bus

A New York Trailways bus that Amtrak sells as a Thruway connection runs once a day each way between Syracuse and Massena, up the same roads as the drive. It leaves the Regional Transportation Center at 3:30 p.m. and Hancock airport at 3:45, stops at Pulaski at 4:15, Watertown at 5:00 and Evans Mills at 5:25, then Gouverneur, De Kalb Junction and Canton, reaches downtown Potsdam at 7:00 p.m. and ends in Massena at 7:35. Potsdam and Massena are each a little under 50 road miles from the cabins, so the bus works only if someone with a car meets you. The bus back leaves Massena at 5:00 a.m. and reaches Syracuse at 9:20.

Flying

No airline flies between Syracuse and the small airports near the cabins, so from Syracuse the drive is the way to come.

A Friday evening from Syracuse

At The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home, quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and check-in at all three cabins starts at 4 p.m., so an after-work start from Syracuse fits. A plan for leaving the city at 4:30:

  1. 4:30 p.m. Onto I-81 north. Fill up at the Byrne Dairy in Cicero if the tank is low.
  2. About 5:10. Pulaski. The Byrne Dairy by the exit is open all night, if you want coffee for the second half.
  3. About 5:45. The Fort Drum exit, I-781 and US 11.
  4. About 6:45. Potsdam.
  5. About 7:30. Malone. Groceries at Price Chopper, 53 Finney Boulevard, which posts hours until 11 p.m. daily, and a text to the host from town with your arrival time.
  6. About 8:15. At the cabin, with most of the evening still ahead.

In winter most of that plan runs in the dark. On Friday, January 29, 2027, the sun sets at the cabins at 5:01 p.m., and dusk is over by 5:32; at Pulaski it sets at 5:12, about when this plan reaches the snow belt. In late spring the same start leaves the last miles in daylight: on Friday, May 21, 2027, sunset at the cabins is at 8:25 p.m.

On Sunday, checkout is before 11 a.m. at all three cabins, which puts you back in Syracuse by mid-afternoon with a lunch stop in Canton or Potsdam. If the Buffalo office has a lake-effect warning out for Oswego County that afternoon, it is the last hour of the drive that will meet it, so check before you leave the cabin.

What Syracuse guests come for

Six reviewers so far give Syracuse as home, and eleven more come from Central New York towns, among them North Syracuse, Phoenix, Central Square, Auburn, Jordan, Cazenovia and Canastota. Their stays are spread across the year, and their reviews point to a few reasons for the trip.

  • Skiing. A Syracuse guest at The Aviator in February 2026 went skiing at Titus Mountain "for two full days." Titus's base lodge sits about 3.5 road miles away.
  • The color. A Syracuse family at The Modern Tiny Home in October 2024 wrote that the "foliage and Mountain Views are beautiful this time of year," and a Central Square guest a year later picked the same cabin for "a little fall getaway."
  • An occasion. One Syracuse party booked The Modern Tiny Home in June 2022 and wrote: "Exactly what we wanted for our family’s wedding weekend."
  • A choice of pace. A Canastota guest in December 2021 liked having "a choice every day of either hiking or relaxing."

From Malone, follow the host's directions over the last few miles of county and town roads; getting to the cabins explains why they work better than a phone map there. To choose between the three cabins, each sleeping four with its own hot tub, start on the cabins page.

Questions

How long is the drive from Syracuse to the cabins?

189 road miles, about three and a half hours: I-81 north past Pulaski and Watertown to the I-781 exit for Fort Drum, then US 11 through Gouverneur, Canton and Potsdam to Malone, and County Route 25 south. With a stop for gas and coffee, plan on close to four hours, and longer when lake-effect snow is falling on I-81 in Oswego County.

Has the I-81 construction in Syracuse changed the route?

The rebuilt interchanges opened in June 2026, and traffic from downtown now joins the main line in Cicero by a flyover. In September 2026 federal approval came to rename I-481 as I-81 and the downtown section as Business Loop 81, but the state told drivers not to expect new signs right away. Follow I-81 North and Watertown, or I-481 North from the east side, and check 511NY.

Where can we stop for gas between Syracuse and Watertown?

Byrne Dairy & Deli has 24-hour shops with gas in Cicero, at 5798 East Seymour Street, in Central Square, at 3019 East Avenue, and by the Pulaski exit, at 3739 State Route 13, which also has diesel. Farther north there is a Stewart's in Adams, at 10546 US Route 11, and one in Evans Mills, at 8722 Noble Street, just after you join US 11.

What should we do if lake-effect snow is falling on I-81?

Read the National Weather Service forecast for Oswego and Jefferson counties and check 511NY. The bands are narrow and drift over a few hours, so waiting often beats driving into one. If a warning covers your whole travel window, the Thruway and the Northway go around the snow belt but add about two and a half hours. Winter driving has the tires and the kit.

Can we get to the cabins from Syracuse without a car?

Partly. Amtrak's 7:02 a.m. train connects at Albany-Rensselaer with the Adirondack, due in Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m.; rent a car at the Plattsburgh airport for the last 61 road miles. Going home, change from the Adirondack to the Lake Shore Limited at Schenectady, not Albany. The daily Trailways bus to Potsdam and Massena stops nearly 50 road miles short, so someone with a car has to meet it.

Is the NY 3 route through the Adirondacks worth taking?

On a clear summer or fall day it makes a good drive. From Watertown you go east to Carthage, then on NY 3 through Harrisville, Star Lake and Cranberry Lake to Tupper Lake, and north on NY 30 past Paul Smiths and Meacham Lake. It adds about an hour compared with US 11, so save it for daylight, and stop at The Wild Center if you have time.

What time can we arrive after a drive from Syracuse?

Check-in is after 4 p.m. at all three cabins, and The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home keep quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Leaving Syracuse at 4:30 on a Friday puts you in Malone around 7:30 for groceries and at the cabin around 8:15. Checkout is before 11 a.m., which gets you home by mid-afternoon.
