Getting there

From Elmira and Corning to the cabins

About 278 road miles, about five hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.

Elmira is about 278 road miles from the cabins and Corning about 287, a drive of about five hours from either city. The route starts on two-lane NY 13 through Horseheads, Ithaca and Dryden, picks up I-81 at Cortland, runs north through Syracuse and past Watertown, and finishes on US 11 through Canton, Potsdam and Malone. This page covers the Southern Tier half of the trip in detail, the choices along the way, the winter weather on both halves, flying from Elmira Corning Regional, and a Friday plan that gets you to the hot tub the same evening.

The route at a glance

From downtown Elmira, the router takes I-86 east for about four miles to the NY 13 exit by Horseheads, then NY 13 north. NY 13 crosses the Town of Veteran, a corner of Schuyler County at Cayuta, and the Town of Newfield, and reaches Ithaca about 32 miles out. From Ithaca the road heads east through the Town of Dryden to the village of Dryden and on into Cortland County, where you join I-81 northbound at Cortland, 56 miles from home.

The rest of the trip uses the same roads as the drive from Central New York: I-81 north through Syracuse and the snow belt east of Lake Ontario, the I-781 spur to US 11 by Fort Drum, and US 11 across St. Lawrence County to Malone. The last ten miles from Malone are County Route 25 south and the town roads to the door.

That comes to 277 miles on NY 13 through Dryden; the router's fastest line, which leaves NY 13 east of Ithaca for county roads to I-81 at Homer, measures 278. Either way it is about five hours of driving. With one stop for fuel and one for groceries in Malone, plan on five and a half to six hours door to door. Pulaski, on I-81 north of Syracuse, is close to the halfway mark in both miles and time.

NY 13 from Elmira to Ithaca

The first 32 miles are two-lane NY 13, out of Horseheads and over the hills of Veteran, Cayuta and Newfield to Ithaca, at the south end of Cayuga Lake. The road comes into Ithaca from the south-west as Elmira Road, about 40 minutes from downtown Elmira.

Two stops sit right on this stretch. Byrne Dairy & Deli's Fairgrounds shop, at 1968 Grand Central Avenue in Horseheads, has gas, a full-service deli, Shelby's donuts and Byrne Dairy ice cream, and is listed as open 24 hours; going there and back to NY 13 costs about four minutes. The company's Ithaca Rt 13 shop, at 323 Elmira Road in Ithaca, has the same counter and the same 24-hour listing, and it sits on the route, so a stop there costs only the time you spend inside.

Buttermilk Falls State Park

Just south of the city, Buttermilk Falls State Park has its entrance at 106 East Buttermilk Falls Road, off NY 13. The park is open all year from dawn to dusk. Its gorge trail follows Buttermilk Creek past pools and a run of waterfalls, climbing about 600 feet on stone steps to the 42-foot Pinnacle Rock, and the park lists an accessible waterfall viewing area for anyone who only wants a look at the lower falls. From April through November the state collects a vehicle entry fee, $10 for a car, between 6 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The lower falls and the viewing area make a good leg-stretch on a summer Friday; the park office has the current trail status.

Ithaca to Cortland

East of Ithaca, phone maps may send you onto NY 366 and then Fall Creek Road and other county roads to NY 281, joining I-81 at the Homer exit. Staying on NY 13 the whole way keeps you on the state highway, and the two come out within a mile of each other. From Dryden, NY 13 runs north-east into Cortland County, past South Cortland, and into the city of Cortland, where Clinton Avenue takes you to the I-81 ramps.

Byrne Dairy has two more 24-hour shops with gas here. The Cortland shop is at 224 Port Watson Street, about two minutes out of your way. The Homer shop, at 36 South West Street, is in the next village north; if you get on I-81 at Homer instead of Cortland, it costs about a minute. Both have the same deli counter as the shops in Horseheads and Ithaca. Fuel here and the next stop can wait until Pulaski, about 70 miles on.

Starting in Corning and the other Southern Tier towns

From Corning the router takes Denison Parkway east to I-86 and follows the expressway about 12 miles to the same NY 13 exit by Horseheads. That makes Corning about 287 road miles from the cabins, nine miles and about ten minutes more than Elmira. Byrne Dairy's South Corning shop, at 417 Park Avenue, has gas and the deli counter and is listed as open 24 hours, if you want to fill up before the expressway.

Guests come from all over the region, and the route changes a little with the start:

The miles are measured from each town to the cabins on the same router the rest of this site uses; your own driveway will move them by a few.

I-81 through Syracuse in 2026

From Cortland, I-81 climbs north through Homer, Preble and Tully, crosses into Onondaga County at Tully, runs through LaFayette, and reaches Syracuse about 30 minutes after you join it. In June 2026 the state finished rebuilding the two interchanges where I-81 meets I-481, on the south side of the city and in Cicero. In September 2026 federal approval came to rename I-481, the highway that loops around the east side, as I-81, and the road through downtown as Business Loop 81; the signs will follow later.

For a driver headed north from the Southern Tier, both choices work. Straight through the city is the route the mileage on this page follows. Taking I-481 around the east side adds about four miles and a few minutes and skips downtown; the two rejoin north of the city in Cicero. The drive from Syracuse explains the renaming, the new ramps and the exit numbers in detail.

North of Syracuse to US 11

From Cicero and Brewerton, I-81 crosses into Oswego County and runs north through the Town of Hastings and the Town of Parish to Pulaski, then into Jefferson County through Adams to Watertown. Just past Watertown, take the I-781 exit for Fort Drum; the spur ends at US 11 near the post, so you never drive through downtown Watertown. The Syracuse page lists the 24-hour shops near the Cicero, Central Square and Pulaski exits and the Stewart's shops in Adams and Evans Mills, so they are not repeated here.

US 11 to Malone

The last hundred miles are US 11 north-east through Evans Mills, Gouverneur, Canton, Potsdam, Brushton and Bangor to Malone. It is a two-lane road through farm country and a string of villages. The drive from Watertown covers this road town by town, with the shops in Gouverneur, Canton, Potsdam and Brushton and the parks on the river islands in Canton. Malone is the last town: groceries, fuel and the hospital. Groceries and supplies lists what the cabin kitchens already have, so you shop only for what you need.

All interstate by Binghamton

If you would rather stay on four lanes from the start, take I-86 east from Elmira along the Southern Tier Expressway to Binghamton, about 54 miles, and pick up I-81 north there. The router puts this way at 319 miles, 41 more than NY 13, and about 25 minutes longer. It makes sense on a night with snow in the forecast for the hills between Horseheads and Cortland, when you would rather be on a plowed interstate, or if you live near Binghamton and want one road all the way to Watertown.

The park route by Old Forge

For a daylight drive in summer or early fall, there is a long, slow route through the middle of the Adirondack Park. From Binghamton, NY 12 runs north through Chenango Forks, Greene, Oxford, Norwich and Sherburne and on through the towns of Hamilton and Sangerfield to Utica. North of Utica, NY 12 continues through Trenton to Remsen, and just past it NY 28 turns off toward the park, through Forestport, Old Forge, Inlet and Raquette Lake to Blue Mountain Lake. NY 30 then carries you north through Long Lake and Tupper Lake, past Paul Smiths and Meacham Lake, to the county roads near the cabins.

The router puts it at 322 miles from Elmira and about an hour longer than NY 13 and I-81, and most of the extra hour falls inside the park on two-lane roads. Leave early enough to reach Old Forge before mid-afternoon. The drive from Utica describes the NY 28 and NY 30 half, and The Wild Center in Tupper Lake makes a good last stop if you have time.

Winter on the two halves

The two halves of this drive get different winter weather, from two different offices of the National Weather Service.

Snow squalls in the Southern Tier

The hills from Elmira to Syracuse are covered by the Weather Service office in Binghamton, and the hazard to watch for there is the snow squall: a brief, intense burst of snow, often on a strong cold front, that brings sudden whiteouts and can ice a road in a few minutes. Squalls usually last 30 to 60 minutes. In 2025 the Binghamton office issued 47 snow squall warnings; seventeen of them covered Cortland County, where you join I-81, and fourteen covered Chemung County, and each warning ran about an hour or less. If a warning sounds on your phone before you leave, wait for it to pass. If you meet one on the road, slow down without slamming the brakes, turn on your headlights and flashers, and leave extra room to the car ahead.

Lake-effect snow north of Syracuse

North of Syracuse, the Buffalo office covers the lake-effect snow belt on I-81 in Oswego and southern Jefferson counties, where bands off Lake Ontario can sit for hours or days. The Syracuse page has the recent storms and how the bands move. Before you leave, check both offices' forecasts and the road reports on 511NY, the state's travel information service; winter driving has tires, the car kit and New York's winter rules.

The way around a storm

If a lake-effect warning covers the whole of your Friday, there is an all-interstate way around the snow belt. Take I-86 to Binghamton, I-88 north-east to the Schenectady area, and the Northway north to exit 30, then the High Peaks roads through Keene, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake and NY 30 north. The router puts that at 363 miles and close to an hour and a half longer than the usual route. Staying on the Northway to Plattsburgh and coming west on NY 190 and US 11 is 393 miles and about an hour and three-quarters longer. The drive from Albany describes the Northway half.

Fall color comes earlier up north

Leaves change earlier near the cabins than at home in the Southern Tier. The state's I LOVE NY foliage report for the week of October 7 to 13, 2026, had Elmira at 25 percent change, Corning, Bath and Hornell at 50 percent, and Ithaca at 40 percent. Along the route north, Cortland was at peak with 65 percent, Potsdam was near peak at 75 percent, and Malone was near peak at 50 percent with bright reds and oranges. Farther into the park, Saranac Lake was at peak and Tupper Lake just past it.

The lesson for a Southern Tier household: if you wait until your own street turns, the best week near the cabins may be over. Book the first or second weekend of October, and check the report each Wednesday before you go. Fall foliage in the northern Adirondacks has the drives and hikes for color.

Flying from Elmira Corning Regional

Elmira Corning Regional Airport, at 276 Sing Sing Road in Horseheads, is owned and run by Chemung County, and two airlines serve it. Allegiant flies to Florida, to Orlando Sanford, Punta Gorda for Fort Myers, and St. Pete-Clearwater for Tampa, and in May 2026 it added a seasonal route to Myrtle Beach. Delta Connection regional jets fly several times a day to Delta's hub in Detroit. Schedules change by season, so check the airlines before you plan around a flight.

None of those routes reaches an airport near the cabins without a change of planes, and once you add a connection and a rental car at the far end, the drive from the Southern Tier is the simpler trip. The airports closest to the cabins, and who flies there, are on airports near the cabins. If you want to travel without a car, the train leaves from Syracuse; the Syracuse page has the connection to Plattsburgh.

A Friday from Elmira

Check-in at all three cabins starts at 4 p.m. and quiet hours at The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., so the aim is to reach the cabin by about 8. A plan for leaving Elmira at 2 p.m. with one fuel stop:

  1. 2:00 p.m. Leave Elmira on I-86 east to NY 13.
  2. About 2:40. Ithaca. The Byrne Dairy on Elmira Road is right on the route.
  3. About 3:10. Cortland. Fuel and coffee at one of the Byrne Dairy shops in Cortland or Homer, about 20 minutes.
  4. About 4:00. Syracuse.
  5. About 4:35. Pulaski, close to halfway.
  6. About 5:10. The Fort Drum exit and US 11.
  7. About 6:10. Potsdam.
  8. About 6:50. Malone. Groceries at Price Chopper, 53 Finney Boulevard, which posts hours of 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, and a text to the host with your arrival time.
  9. About 7:40. At the cabin.

From Corning, leave about ten minutes earlier and the rest of the times hold.

Daylight by season

In December, most of this plan runs after dark. On Friday, December 11, 2026, the sun sets at 4:37 p.m. in Elmira, at 4:26 at the US 11 junction by Fort Drum, and at 4:17 at the cabins, where dusk ends by 4:49. If you would like to do US 11 in daylight in early winter, leave Elmira at noon, which puts you at the Fort Drum exit around 3:10 with the same stop. By mid-February the light lasts longer: on Friday, February 19, 2027, sunset at the cabins is 5:31 p.m.

On a fall Friday such as October 16, 2026, the sun sets at the cabins at 6:12 p.m., so the 2 p.m. plan reaches Potsdam around dusk. In early summer the whole drive is in daylight: on Friday, June 18, 2027, the sun sets at 8:47 p.m. both in Elmira and at the cabins, an hour after the plan above gets you there, with time for the fire pit before dark.

Sunday back to the Southern Tier

Checkout is before 11 a.m. Leaving at 11 puts you in Syracuse a little after 2 and in Elmira around 4, or around 4:30 with a lunch stop. In winter, check the Buffalo office's forecast before you go: the snow belt between Adams and Pulaski comes in the third hour of the drive home.

What Southern Tier guests come for

A handful of reviewers have given Southern Tier towns as home so far: Horseheads, Waverly, Ithaca, Binghamton, and Hornell twice. Every one of them left five stars, and their reviews line up with what the area does best.

  • Hiking, then the hot tub. A Horseheads guest at The Modern Pine in August 2025 called "relaxing in it under the stars after a long day of hiking" a highlight. A Hornell guest in September 2024 wrote that "the hot tub was a great way to end the day after a hike." Hiking near Malone has the trails closest to the door, among them Owls Head.
  • Skiing. A Binghamton guest at The Aviator in January 2025 "went up to this area to ski at Titus Mountain," whose base lodge is about 3.5 road miles from the cabins. Skiing Titus Mountain has the lifts, the night skiing and the tickets.
  • Winter quiet. An Ithaca guest at The Aviator in November 2025 wrote: "The hot tub is wonderful, especially in winter."
  • The fireplace and the town. A Waverly guest at The Modern Pine in June 2026 wrote that the "fire place was awesome" and found that Malone "has a lot to offer for amenities."

For the last few miles from Malone, follow the host's directions; getting to the cabins explains why they beat a phone map on the town roads. To pick a cabin, each sleeping four with its own hot tub, start on the cabins page.

Questions

How long is the drive from Elmira to the cabins?

About 278 road miles and about five hours of driving: NY 13 north through Horseheads, Ithaca and Dryden to I-81 at Cortland, I-81 through Syracuse to the Fort Drum exit past Watertown, then US 11 through Canton and Potsdam to Malone and County Route 25 south. With a fuel stop and groceries in Malone, plan on five and a half to six hours door to door.

How far is it from Corning?

About 287 road miles. From Corning, take I-86 east about 12 miles to the NY 13 exit by Horseheads and follow the Elmira route from there. It adds about ten minutes, so the drive is still about five hours, a little more with stops.

Is it better to go by Binghamton and stay on the interstate?

It is 41 miles longer and about 25 minutes slower than NY 13, so most Elmira and Corning drivers take NY 13 to Cortland. The interstate makes sense on a snowy night, when you would rather be on I-86 and I-81 than on the two-lane hills between Horseheads and Cortland.

Where should we stop for gas between Elmira and Syracuse?

Byrne Dairy & Deli has 24-hour shops with gas and a deli counter right on the route at 323 Elmira Road in Ithaca, and close to it at 1968 Grand Central Avenue in Horseheads, 224 Port Watson Street in Cortland and 36 South West Street in Homer. The stops north of Syracuse are on the Syracuse page.

What about snow on this drive?

Two kinds. South of Syracuse, watch for snow squalls: short whiteouts that usually pass within 30 to 60 minutes. North of Syracuse, lake-effect bands off Lake Ontario can sit over I-81 for hours. Check the Weather Service forecasts and 511NY before you leave, and see winter driving for tires and the car kit.

Can we fly from Elmira Corning Regional instead?

Allegiant flies from Elmira to Florida and, in season, Myrtle Beach, and Delta Connection flies to Detroit. No flight from Elmira reaches an airport near the cabins without a change of planes, so from the Southern Tier the drive is the simpler trip. Airports near the cabins lists who flies to the airports at this end.

What time should we leave on a Friday?

Check-in starts at 4 p.m. Leaving Elmira at 2 with one 20-minute stop puts you in Malone around 6:50 for groceries and at the cabin around 7:40. In December the sun sets near the cabins at about 4:17, so leave at noon if you want US 11 in daylight.
