A Couples' Cabin Getaway in the Adirondacks

Which cabin suits a couple, the host's welcome Champagne, hot tub and fire pit evenings, two plans with dinner reservations, and the best seasons for two.

The cabins stand in the woods about ten road miles south of Malone, at the northern edge of the Adirondack Park, and although each one sleeps four, many of their guests come as two. This page is for an anniversary, a honeymoon, a birthday or a weekend with nothing planned: which cabin suits which couple, what the host leaves for you, the hot tub and fire pit evenings, a two-night and a three-night plan with dinner reservations, and the best times of year to come.

Who comes as a couple

More than two dozen of the cabins' guest reviews mention a husband, a wife, a boyfriend, a girlfriend or a partner, an anniversary or a honeymoon. The occasions include a first wedding anniversary at The Modern Tiny Home, a 26th anniversary at The Modern Pine, a honeymoon weekend, a Valentine's getaway, a boyfriend's birthday and a husband's birthday weekend. The Modern Tiny Home's very first guests, in February 2020, were a couple. Each listing calls its cabin perfect for a couple or a family, and The Aviator's names "the wanderlust couple."

Those reviews mention the quiet most often, then the hot tub and how clean the cabin was, and three couples at The Modern Pine mention its fireplace. A husband and wife at The Aviator in September 2024 wrote, "For hours all we could hear were birds!" Another couple, at The Modern Tiny Home in March 2022, wrote that it was "one of the first times we took a weekend to do nothing but relax, and it won't be the last."

Which cabin for which couple

All three cabins have the same plan: a main bedroom, a bunk room, one bathroom, a full kitchen, and a living room with two large picture windows over the forest. Each has its own deck with a private hot tub, its own grill and its own fire pit. The Aviator's and The Modern Tiny Home's listings put a king bed in the main bedroom. For two people, the differences are the indoor fire, the deck, the fire pit and the neighbors.

The Aviator

The Aviator is the far cabin on the property it shares with The Modern Pine. It has the Jøtul stove behind glass, a large open deck with the hot tub, and a smokeless fire pit out on the lawn that its listing sets up for fireside stories and s'mores. Its rules set quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Its listing states no minimum age for the person who books, while the other two ask for 25, so a couple under 25 should ask the host before booking. The post on The Aviator walks through it room by room.

The Modern Pine

The Modern Pine has the same stove, and its listing invites you to watch the forest and the mountains through the two picture windows while the fireplace sets the mood. Its hot tub is the only one of the three listed as open 24 hours, all year, and its deck has a large screened room for a drink outside in bug season. Its rules list no quiet hours and rule out parties, and the person who books must be 25 or older, send picture ID and the names of the guests, and stay for the whole visit. Couples have come here for anniversaries in October 2023, January 2024, February 2026 and August 2026, for a honeymoon in April 2024 and for a Valentine's getaway in February 2025.

The Modern Tiny Home

The Modern Tiny Home has no stove; its listing gives heating and air conditioning. It has the most land around it: its listing describes more than 300 private acres, with a short trail, about a five-minute walk, to an observation deck over a pond, which the listing recommends for watching wildlife from birds to beavers. You see the large stone fire pit as you walk up to the door. One other cabin, not one of the three, shares the property, and when it is booked the trail, the pond deck and the parking are shared. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

In short, choose The Aviator for the stove and the far end of the drive, The Modern Pine for the stove, the screened room and a hot tub at any hour, and The Modern Tiny Home for the walk to the pond and the big stone fire. The three cabins compared sets every amenity side by side, and how the two cabins share a property shows how The Aviator and The Modern Pine sit along their drive.

The welcome and the kitchen

The host gives everyone who stays a welcome bottle of Champagne, and all three cabins list wine glasses. The kitchens are complete, with a stove and oven, a microwave, a refrigerator and freezer, a toaster, a kettle, a coffee maker and the cooking basics, and The Aviator and The Modern Pine add dishwashers. Guests who cooked at The Modern Pine in December 2022 found very sharp knives and good pots and pans but "no spices other than salt and pepper." Pack the spices and oils you cook with.

Shop in Malone on the way in. Price Chopper, at 53 Finney Boulevard, posts hours of 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, and The Jug Store, for wine and spirits, is on the same street at number 44. Groceries and supplies has the other stores.

If the trip marks an occasion, say so in your booking message. A couple at The Modern Pine in October 2023 wrote that the hosts "made our 26th anniversary extra special." If you want a photographer along for engagement or anniversary pictures, ask first: the house rules at The Modern Pine and The Aviator say no commercial photography.

Hot tub evenings

Each hot tub belongs to its own cabin and is never shared with the neighbors. The Modern Pine's is listed as available all year and open 24 hours. At The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home the quiet hours begin at 10 p.m., so a late soak there is a quiet one. None of the tubs has a gate or a lock. The Modern Pine's cover has clips: unclip it to open the tub and clip it shut when you get out. At checkout, The Modern Pine's and The Modern Tiny Home's notes ask you to set the water to 95 degrees and secure the cover.

Hot water and a bottle of Champagne call for a little care. The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission says hot tub water should never be hotter than 104°F and calls 100°F safe for a healthy adult. It warns that heavy drinking in a hot tub can cause drowsiness that leads to drowning, and that water above 102°F can harm a pregnancy in its first three months. Keep the soaks short, keep water to drink on the deck, and save the bottle for before or after.

The reason to stay up is the sky. The couple who spent their first wedding anniversary at The Modern Tiny Home wrote of "less light pollution ...so you get a beautiful night sky view." The Aviator's listing points its guests to the night sky from the hot tub. Stargazing from the hot tub has the moon dates and the meteor showers through 2027.

Fire pit evenings

Each fire pit sits differently. The Aviator's smokeless pit stands out on its lawn with Adirondack chairs, The Modern Pine's is set into the tree line with Adirondack seating, and The Modern Tiny Home's is a large stone ring in front of the cabin. Light the fire about half an hour before sunset and you get the last of the light and the first stars from the same chair. The sun goes down early in winter and late in summer:

Ask the host what firewood your cabin has before you arrive, and leave the wood from home where it is: New York bans untreated firewood from other states and countries, and untreated wood moved more than 50 miles from where it was cut, because it can carry insects and diseases that kill trees. Keep the fire small, never leave it, and drown it before bed. The après-ski post has the state's campfire rules.

Where to book dinner

With a full kitchen and a grill, you can eat in every night. For the nights out, these four restaurants were serving in the fall of 2026. Small-town hours change with the season, so call to book a table before you set out.

The View, at the Mirror Lake Inn77 Mirror Lake Drive, Lake Placid, about 52 road milesSeatings 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.; closed Tuesdays(518) 302-3000; reservations recommended

The Mirror Lake Inn bills The View as Lake Placid's only AAA Four Diamond restaurant, and its wine list has won Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence for 20 years in a row, which makes it the place for a milestone dinner. Campfire cooks seasonal comfort food with ingredients from local farms. The Hotel Saranac's Great Hall Bar, a room modeled on the Davanzati Palace in Florence, has had live music on Friday nights; its posted schedule ran through August 2026, so ask about the fall and winter. For a casual night, the closest is the Trailside Bar and Restaurant on County Route 27 in Owls Head, about five road miles from the cabins: a rebuilt roadside bar and grill with burgers and wings and live music on some nights, at (518) 317-7333. In Malone, Mo's Pub and Grill on State Route 11 has more than 25 burgers and sandwiches and 24 beers on tap and opens every day, and The Pines Tap and Table on Bare Hill Road makes its own pizza dough. The Malone town guide lists the rest of the village's restaurants.

A two-night weekend

This plan fits a Friday-to-Sunday stay. Check-in is after 4 p.m. and checkout before 11 a.m. at all three cabins, which leaves two evenings, one full day and two short mornings.

Friday

Do the shopping in Malone: groceries at Price Chopper, a bottle at The Jug Store and a full tank. If you would rather not cook on the first night, eat at Riverside on West Main Street, which opens at 4 p.m., before the last ten miles. Keep the directions the host sends after you book, because phone maps go wrong on the last few miles; getting to the cabins covers the roads. At the cabin, open the welcome Champagne, turn on the stove at The Aviator or The Modern Pine, and end the evening in the hot tub.

Saturday

Sleep in, then take a short walk: the nearly level path to High Falls, a 30-foot cascade on the Salmon River about five road miles away, or the 1.3-mile climb up Owls Head to ledges over Indian Lake and Mountain View Lake. Hiking near Malone has both trailheads. Give the afternoon to the cabin: the hot tub in daylight, a book, a nap. Book dinner at Donovan's, whose posted Saturday hours run to 9 p.m., and come home to a fire.

Sunday

Soak once more before breakfast, work through the checkout notes on your listing, and leave by 11. For a last walk, Elephant's Head is a 0.8-mile climb of 320 feet, with a wooden staircase near the top, to a lookout over Lake Titus. Its trailhead, about nine road miles from the cabins, is at the end of a 1.5-mile gravel road off NY 30, the road north to Malone, and cars with low clearance may find the gravel hard going. The state forest guide has the details.

A three-night weekend

A third night buys a long day south. Book Thursday to Sunday, or Friday to Monday on a holiday weekend, and put the long day in the middle. This version has lunch in Saranac Lake and dinner in Lake Placid.

The first evening

Shop in Malone, settle in and keep the evening at home: the grill, the stove, the bottle and the hot tub.

The long day

Leave in the late morning and drive south on NY 30. Paul Smith's College's Visitor Interpretive Center, on NY 30 at Paul Smiths, has more than 25 miles of trails, open from dawn to dusk every day, for a walk on the way down. Saranac Lake is about 43 road miles from the cabins; have lunch at Campfire in the Hotel Saranac. Lake Placid is nine miles farther on. Walk the 2.7-mile paved loop around Mirror Lake, from the toboggan chute on Parkside Drive past grey plaques with the names and heights of the 46 High Peaks. Dinner is at The View, where the inn recommends reservations; it is closed on Tuesdays. Lake Placid and Whiteface has more for the day.

Plan the drive home before the first glass. It takes about an hour and a quarter on two-lane roads through the woods, and deer and moose move most at dawn and dusk; New York recorded 5,854 crashes with deer in November 2024 alone. Book an early seating, let the driver skip the wine, and if an animal steps out, brake firmly and do not swerve. For a shorter drive, have dinner at Campfire instead, and on a Friday ask whether the Great Hall Bar has music that night.

The slow day

Give the day after the long drive to the cabin: a late breakfast, the hot tub at noon, the walk to the pond if you are at The Modern Tiny Home, or a nap. If it rains, Lucky Strike Lanes on Woodward Street in Malone is a bowling center with food and drinks and, on some evenings, music and glowing lights, and it works for two as well as for a crowd. Dinner is Riverside or the grill, then the fire pit.

The last morning

One last soak, the checkout notes, and out by 11 a.m.

The best seasons for two

Winter

Winter is the season for the stove and the hot tub. Malone averages a high of 23°F and a low of 4°F in January, with about 95 inches of snow a year. Valentine's Day 2027 falls on a Sunday, the closing day of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, which runs from February 5 to 14 with its ice palace lit every night, weather permitting, and its parade on Saturday, February 13. Presidents' Day is Monday, February 15, so a three-night Valentine's weekend works. Couples who ski can take the lights at Titus Mountain, five to seven minutes away: on its last posted schedule, night skiing ran on Fridays and Saturdays until 9 p.m. See the carnival guide.

Spring

March still has snow, and New York's Maple Weekends fall on March 13 and 14 and March 20 and 21 in 2027, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at participating farms. Late May and early June are the peak of black fly season, the weeks for The Modern Pine's screened room; bugs, ticks and black flies has the rest.

Summer

July in Malone averages 77°F by day and 58°F at night, so the evenings are cool enough for the hot tub in summer too. On June 19, 2027, the sun sets at 8:46 p.m., which means dinner on the deck can run late and the fire can wait until nine.

Fall

Peak color in the Adirondacks typically comes around the last weekend of September and the first weekend of October, with higher ground turning first. October averages 55°F by day and 36°F at night, the stove comes back on, and the roads have more deer: New York counted 4,050 deer crashes in October 2024. Fall color in the northern Adirondacks has the drives.

Before you book

  • Each cabin takes four guests at most, and none allows parties or events.
  • At The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home the person who books must be 25 or older, send picture ID and a list of guests, and be there for the whole stay.
  • Smoking is not allowed in any of the cabins.
  • Pets are allowed for a fee. The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home take house-trained pets under 25 pounds, no cats, never left alone in the cabin and kept off the furniture and beds. The Aviator takes one house-trained pet of up to 25 pounds, never left alone and kept off the furniture.
  • The Modern Pine's listing says the area has Verizon and AT&T service only and that reception inside the cabin is limited; all three cabins list wifi with an ethernet connection.
  • Each cabin is booked on its own listing; how to book explains how the dates you pick here carry over.

Questions

Which cabin is best for a couple?

Any of the three suits two. The Aviator is the far cabin on its property, with a Jøtul gas stove, a large open deck and a smokeless fire pit on the lawn. The Modern Pine has the same stove, a large screened room and the only hot tub listed as open 24 hours. The Modern Tiny Home has a pond trail and a big stone fire pit but no stove. See the cabins compared.

Is there anything special for an anniversary or a honeymoon?

The host gives everyone who stays a welcome bottle of Champagne, and all three cabins list wine glasses. Mention the occasion in your booking message; one couple wrote that the hosts made their 26th anniversary extra special. The house rules at The Modern Pine and The Aviator say no commercial photography, so ask before you bring a photographer.

Can we use the hot tub late at night?

Yes. Each hot tub is private to its cabin. The Modern Pine's is listed as open 24 hours all year, while The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home keep quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., so a late soak there should be a quiet one. Keep the water at 104°F or below, the most the Consumer Product Safety Commission advises, and go easy on the Champagne in hot water.

Where can we go for a special dinner?

In Malone, about ten road miles north, Riverside Steak and Seafood serves from 4 p.m. and Donovan's Steak and Ale, on its posted hours, from Tuesday to Saturday. For a milestone, The View at the Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid, about an hour and a quarter away, has seatings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., recommends reservations and closes on Tuesdays. Call ahead everywhere; see where to eat.

Do we need to be 25 to book?

At The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home, yes: the person who books must be 25 or older, send picture ID and a list of guests, and stay for the whole visit. The Aviator's listing states no minimum age, so a couple under 25 should ask the host before booking it.

When is the best time for a weekend for two?

Winter for the stove, the snow and the hot tub; Valentine's Day 2027 falls on the last day of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. Late September and early October for the fall color, and summer for long evenings on the deck. Late May and early June are the peak of black fly season. See the four seasons.
