Spring at the Cabins

Spring at the cabins in April and May: Malone's weather and frost dates, daylight, ice-out records, mud season, maple, trout, and what reopens when.

Spring at the cabins runs through April and May. The cabins sit about ten road miles south of Malone at the northern edge of the Adirondack Park, and in these two months the snow goes, the Salmon River runs high, the ice leaves the lakes, the trails turn to mud and then dry out, and the woods turn green. This page takes spring a month at a time, with the weather and the daylight, ice-out, mud season, maple and trout, what reopens and when, and how each cabin works before and during black fly season.

The weather in April and May

These are the 1991-2020 averages for Malone, about ten road miles north of the cabins and several hundred feet lower; the cabins sit at about 1,300 feet. The precipitation column is rain and melted snow combined, and the last two columns count the nights at or below freezing and the days with at least an inch of snow on the ground in an average year.

April begins in winter and ends in spring. Its average high is 51°F and its average low 32°F, it still freezes on about 18 nights, and about seven inches of snow falls in a normal April, enough to cover the ground on five or six days. May is 13 degrees warmer by day, at 64°F, and 12 degrees warmer at night, at 44°F, with frost on two or three nights. Each month brings about three inches of rain and melted snow, with a tenth of an inch or more on about eight days.

Frost lasts into May. In Malone the middle date of the last spring freeze, 32°F or lower, is May 6, and of the last hard freeze, 28°F or lower, April 27, so in about half of all years there is still a frost after May 6.

Malone's weather station, with records back to 1983, shows how wide the swings can be. April has reached 87°F, on April 4, 2010, and dropped to 5°F, on April 6, 1995. A foot of snow or more has fallen on a single April day four times: the most was 17 inches on April 23, 1993, and the most recent 12.5 inches on April 28, 2010. May has reached 94°F, on May 28, 2020, and it has brought snow too: 9 inches on May 10, 1983, and 4 inches on May 1, 2021.

Daylight in April and May

These are the sunrise and sunset times at the cabins in local clock time.

Spring adds daylight fast, about two and a half hours between the first of April and the end of May. From the start of May the sun sets after 8 p.m., and on May 31 twilight lasts until about 9:10 p.m., long enough for a walk after dinner and a fire before full dark.

The night sky in spring

The nights shorten as fast as the days lengthen. Full darkness, when the last of the twilight is gone, comes at about 9:06 p.m. on April 1, 9:59 p.m. on May 1 and 10:57 p.m. on May 31, so a stargazing soak moves later through the season. Of the two spring meteor showers in 2027, the eta Aquariids get the darker sky, peaking before dawn on May 5 and 6 under a moon only 2 percent lit, while the Lyrids peak on April 21 and 22 under a full moon. The stargazing post covers the rest of the sky.

April

April is the thaw. Snow lingers in the woods, the dirt roads turn to mud, and the rivers rise. The Salmon River, which flows north through Chasm Falls to Malone, shows the pattern in the federal record. Of the 85 years with a recorded yearly high-water mark at the U.S. Geological Survey gauge at Chasm Falls, about 2.2 road miles from the cabins, between 1926 and 2013, the peak came in April in 45 years, in March in 21 and in May in 8. The same water goes over High Falls a few miles upstream, in the Titusville Mountain State Forest, about five road miles from the cabins.

The ski season is over by April at the local hill. Titus Mountain had not posted its 2026-27 dates by early October 2026, and in recent winters its lifts have closed between late March and early April, snow permitting. The ski season on the trails at the Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center ends on April 1. Trout season opens the same day on most streams, and the state's bear guidance is to take bird feeders down after April 1. More on both below.

Many attractions are closed in April. The Wild Center in Tupper Lake closes every April for its spring cleaning. The Almanzo Wilder Farm opens on Memorial Day weekend, and the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway in mid-May. An April stay is for the cabin, the low trails and the rivers, and the events calendar lists the few dates that fall in these weeks.

May

May brings the green. A guest who came back to The Modern Tiny Home for a fifth visit wrote in May 2025: "It has peace and quiet and as much green as the eye can see."

It also brings the bugs. Black flies usually arrive around the middle of May and are at their worst from late May into early June, and ticks become more common as the weather warms; black flies, mosquitoes and ticks covers how to deal with both.

May is when the region reopens. These are the dates from recent seasons; check each one for 2027.

  • Meacham Lake Campground, the state campground about 20 road miles away, opened on May 15 in 2026.
  • The Saranac Lake farmers market runs on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on River Street; its 2026 season began on May 16.
  • The Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway opened on May 16 in 2025, with daily hours of 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Malone Golf Club, about nine road miles away, charges off-peak rates from its spring opening day until mid-May; in 2026 its peak season began on May 18.
  • The Malone farmers market opened on Wednesday, May 13, in 2026, with hours from noon to 5 p.m. under the pavilion at the Malone Town Office.
  • The Wild Center, about 57 road miles away, reopened after its April closing on a Friday-to-Sunday schedule in 2026 and opened every day from Memorial Day, May 25.
  • The Almanzo Wilder Farm in Burke, about 13 road miles away, opens on Memorial Day weekend, which falls on May 29 to 31 in 2027; the Wilder farm guide has the tours.

For birders, Northern New York Audubon's Great Adirondack Birding Celebration filled the last weekend of May 2026, May 29 to 31, at the Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center, about 31 road miles south, with full-day trips to places such as Massawepie Mire and the Lake Champlain valley, a free dawn chorus walk and an evening owl prowl. In 2027 the celebration moves to June 4 to 6, with North Country Community College in Saranac Lake as its new base. The draws are the boreal birds, among them Bicknell's thrush, the Canada jay and the black-backed woodpecker, and the more than 30 kinds of warblers that arrive in spring; the wildlife guide covers birding closer to the cabins.

Spring holidays and school breaks

Three dates matter for guests from New York and Canada. Plan around them if you want the quietest weeks, or book early if you need one of them.

  • New York City's spring recess. The city's public schools close from Thursday, April 22 to Friday, April 30, 2027.
  • Victoria Day. Monday, May 24, 2027 is Victoria Day, a statutory holiday in Ontario and most of Canada, and Quebec marks National Patriots' Day on the same day, so guests from both provinces have a long weekend.
  • Memorial Day. Monday, May 31, 2027 gives the United States its long weekend at the end of the month, and the Almanzo Wilder Farm usually opens for its season that weekend.

Ice-out on the lakes

Ice-out is the day a lake's surface is free of ice and can be crossed by boat from one end to the other. Two long records in the region show when it usually comes.

On Lower St. Regis Lake at Paul Smiths, about 31 road miles south, Paul Smith's College has a record of ice-out dates from 1970 to 2024, built from spring ice-out contests and the college's own monitoring. Across those 55 springs the middle date is April 20. The ice went out in May in six of those years, most recently in 2018, and in March in three, 2012, 2016 and 2024, and the record shows the lake thawing about two weeks earlier, on average, than it did around 1970.

Mirror Lake in Lake Placid, about 52 road miles away, has an ice record going back to 1903. Its average ice-out date over that record is April 21, and the earliest was March 23, 2012. Since 2020 the record has also shown a trend toward earlier ice-out, which now comes about eight days earlier than at the start of the record. In 2026 the ice went out on April 11, after a season that began on December 2, 2025, and lasted 130 days.

The loons come back with the open water. They return to Adirondack lakes in early spring, the males first to claim a territory and the females after them. If you paddle in the first weeks after ice-out, New York's cold-water rule applies: from November 1 to May 1, everyone underway in a boat shorter than 21 feet, canoes and kayaks included, must wear a life jacket. The cabins do not list boats, so bring your own, and the lakes guide covers the lakes nearest the cabins.

Mud season and the trails

As the frost comes out of the ground, the trails turn to mud. The state's spring advice for hikers is on when to come and what to pack; in short, stay off trails above 2,500 feet until mid-June and walk straight through the mud rather than around it.

The walks closest to the cabins all stay below that height. Elephant's Head tops out at 1,980 feet, and the Owls Head ledges sit on a peak of about 2,250 feet, though the Owls Head path is rocky and wet, and one writer counted "about six different kinds of mud" on it. The level walk to High Falls follows the Salmon River. The state forest guide and the Owls Head guide have the trails.

The access roads are the other spring problem. Each spring the state closes the gates on its seasonal access roads through state forest and Forest Preserve land, because driving them in mud season damages them, and reopens them once they are dry enough for traffic; in 2026 every gate in Franklin County and the rest of the state's Region 5 was expected to be shut by March 20. One hiker found the Elephant's Head gate still closed in late April 2025 and came back on the next fine day to walk up the road from the gate, past dozens of blooming trilliums, a couple of brooks and a large beaver pond, with views through the leafless trees. Plan on extra walking, and wear boots that can take mud.

Maple season

Sugaring belongs to the turn of the season. New York's maple season begins in late February and runs into April, and the sap runs best on days in the high 30s to low 40s that follow nights below freezing. Producers count on enough of those freeze-and-thaw days in the six to ten weeks after they tap their trees. The season ends when the trees wake up: as the buds swell, the syrup takes on a flavor the trade calls "buddy," and for most producers the first of it is the signal that the sugaring season is over. At Cornell's Uihlein Forest in Lake Placid, long-term sap records reported in 2008 showed the start and the end of the sap season moving about a week earlier over the previous 30 years.

New York made 884,000 gallons of maple syrup in 2026, up 7 percent from 2025 and second only to Vermont. Titus Mountain runs its own sugarhouse, Moon Valley Maple, about three and a half road miles from the cabins; the Titus guide tells its story. New York's Maple Weekends, when sugarhouses open to visitors, fall in March, on March 13 and 14 and March 20 and 21 in 2027, so they belong to a late-winter stay. With syrup in the cabin and a late snowfall on the deck, the après-ski post has the method for sugar on snow.

Fishing in spring

Trout season opens on April 1 on most of the state's streams and runs to October 15, and anyone 16 or older needs a New York fishing license. The state's spring 2026 stocking plan put trout into the Salmon River in Malone in the second and fourth weeks of April and May, and into the Malone Village Pond in April and May. In April the river often runs high with snowmelt, so the pond and the slower stretches are easier places to start. None of New York's 2026 free fishing days fell in April or May; the first after the winter pair came on June 27 and 28. The Salmon River guide covers the trout water in Malone, and fishing trips covers the licenses, the gear and the cabins for an angling stay.

Birds, frogs and bears

The Paul Smith's College phenology study has tracked spring on its campus, about 31 road miles south of the cabins, since 1990. Its records show male robins arriving about 20 days earlier, on average, than when the study began, and spotted salamanders migrating at night to their breeding pools along Keese Mills Road about 12 days earlier. Wood frogs and spring peepers use the same temporary pools. Across the study the animals and the lake ice have shifted two to three weeks earlier, while the plants it follows, among them trilliums, trout lilies and red maples, show no clear change.

At the cabins, The Modern Tiny Home's listing describes a short hike to an observation deck by the pond, "perfect for wildlife watching, from birds to beavers!"

Spring is bear season too. The state's guidance is to take bird feeders down after April 1, since birds do not need the extra food in spring and summer and feeders draw bears, and feeding bears is illegal in New York. Keep food and garbage inside the cabin. The wildlife guide has more on bears, moose and loons.

The cabins in spring

The hot tubs stay in use through the spring. April nights average about 32°F, and a late snowstorm can still come through. The Pine's tub is listed as open 24 hours, all year, and the hot tub page covers soaking in every season.

On the cold April evenings, The Modern Pine and The Aviator each have a Jøtul gas stove in the living room, and The Modern Tiny Home has its heating. By late May the bugs matter more than the cold. The Pine has a large screened room on its deck and the Tiny Home a small screened corner, while The Aviator's large open deck has no screen. For a hot day, all three cabins list air conditioning; Malone has seen 94°F in May. Every cabin also has its own washer and dryer, which helps after a muddy day on the trails.

A spring weekend at the cabins

For an April weekend, arrive on Friday in daylight, since by mid-month the sun sets at about 7:40 p.m., and stop in Malone for groceries on the way. On Saturday morning, walk to High Falls while the river is high: a level 1.5-mile round trip of one to two hours on a blue-marked trail. In the afternoon, if the Elephant's Head gate is still closed, walk the 1.5-mile access road to the trailhead and climb the last 0.8 mile to the lookout, or fish the Salmon River in Malone if you have a license. After dinner, wait for full dark, about 9:30 p.m. in mid-April, and take the hot tub.

A late-May weekend adds the Saranac Lake farmers market on Saturday morning and a walk on the trails at the Paul Smith's College center, about 31 road miles south, which are open from dawn to dusk every day. Black flies are out by then and bite most from about 9 to 11 in the morning and 4 to 7 in the afternoon, so plan the walks for the middle of the day and the evenings for the screened room at the Pine or the screened corner at the Tiny Home.

Which cabin for a spring stay

  • The Modern Tiny Home (Cabin 1) has the short walk to the pond and the observation deck, the small screened corner on its deck and the big stone fire pit. The trails, the observation deck and the parking area are shared when the neighboring cabin is booked.
  • The Modern Pine (Cabin 2) has the large screened room for the black fly weeks, the Jøtul stove for cold evenings and a hot tub listed as open 24 hours all year.
  • The Aviator (Cabin 3) has the Jøtul stove, a large open deck and a smokeless fire pit on the lawn, and suits April and early May, before the black flies.

Each cabin sleeps four, in a main bedroom and a bunk room, and The Pine and The Aviator share one property, so a group of eight can book both. The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home are listed as not suitable for children under 10, and all three listings carry Airbnb's flag that they are not suitable for children and infants. The cabin comparison sets the three side by side.

The roads in spring

April can still bring snow, so the advice in winter driving holds into the month, and the last miles to the cabins are county and town roads and a private gravel drive. Use the host's directions, and allow for the gated state roads described above if your plans include a trailhead. From Canada, the Trout River crossing on NY 30 has been closed to U.S.-bound traffic since June 1, 2026, with the work expected to last until about May 2028; crossing the border lists the other ports.

What to pack

Pack for frosty mornings and mild afternoons, for rain and mud, and from mid-May for black flies. The full spring list is on when to come and what to pack.

Questions

When does the ice go out on the lakes?

Usually in April. On Lower St. Regis Lake at Paul Smiths, the middle ice-out date in a college record from 1970 to 2024 is April 20, and recent years have ranged from March 29 (2024) to May 4 (2018). Mirror Lake in Lake Placid averages April 21 over a record that goes back to 1903; in 2026 its ice went out on April 11. The lakes guide covers the lakes near the cabins.

Is April a good time to hike near the cabins?

For low walks, yes, with boots for mud. The state recommends staying off trails above 2,500 feet until mid-June. The nearby walks stay lower: Elephant's Head tops out at 1,980 feet, Owls Head at about 2,250, and the walk to High Falls is level. Seasonal access roads may still be gated, which adds a road walk. See the state forest guide.

When do the black flies come out?

Usually around the middle of May, with the worst of it from late May into early June; they fade by early July. They bite most from about 9 to 11 in the morning and 4 to 7 in the afternoon. For evenings outside, The Modern Pine has a large screened room on its deck and The Modern Tiny Home a small screened corner. See black flies, mosquitoes and ticks.

When is the last frost in spring?

In Malone the middle date of the last spring freeze, 32°F or lower, is May 6, and of the last hard freeze, 28°F or lower, April 27. So in about half of all years there is still a frost after May 6, and May averages two or three nights at or below freezing. The cabins sit several hundred feet higher than the village.

Does it still snow in April?

Often. A normal April in Malone brings about seven inches of snow, enough to cover the ground on five or six days, and the village's weather station has recorded a foot or more on a single April day four times since 1983, most recently 12.5 inches on April 28, 2010. Keep the winter driving gear in the car through mid-April.

What reopens in May?

Most of the region. In recent seasons Meacham Lake Campground opened on May 15, the Saranac Lake farmers market and the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway in mid-May, The Wild Center went from weekends to every day on Memorial Day, and the Almanzo Wilder Farm opened on Memorial Day weekend. Check each date for 2027; the events calendar has more.

Can we see maple sugaring in spring?

The sap runs from late February into April, and New York's Maple Weekends, when sugarhouses open to visitors, fall on March 13 and 14 and March 20 and 21 in 2027. By April the season is winding down, and it ends when the trees bud. Titus Mountain, about three and a half road miles away, makes its own syrup, Moon Valley Maple.
