Trails & Hiking
Elephant's Head and a waterfall in the state forest next door, open fire towers on Azure, Loon Lake, St. Regis and Lyon mountains, the Debar Mountain Wild Forest, the Saranac Lake 6er peaks, and the High Peaks an hour and a half south.
Hiking from the northern edge of the park
The closest hiking starts a few minutes from the cabins. In the Titusville Mountain State Forest a 0.8-mile trail climbs to Elephant's Head over Lake Titus, and an easy walk leads to a 30-foot waterfall. Owls Head, a 1.3-mile family hike with 725 feet of climbing, looks out over Indian Lake, Mountain View Lake and the Sable Highlands. At The Modern Tiny Home a trail runs to a pond and an observation deck, where guests have watched beavers and one family counted fifty species of birds over a long summer stay.
South of the cabins, the 81,160-acre Debar Mountain Wild Forest holds Loon Lake Mountain: 2.8 miles and more than 1,600 feet of climbing to a restored fire tower. Azure, St. Regis and Lyon mountains carry open fire towers too, all within an hour and a half, and all four count toward the Adirondack Mountain Club's Fire Tower Challenge. Lyon, at 3,830 feet, is the highest summit north of the Saranac River, and its tower looks north to the Montreal skyline.
St. Regis is also one of the six peaks of the Saranac Lake 6er, and the High Peaks begin about an hour and a half south, where Cascade has one of the shortest approaches to a bare summit. Every guide gives the length, the climb, the drive from the cabins and its sources. Read the black fly and tick guide before a hike between mid-May and early July.
