From Hartford to the cabins
About 300 road miles, about five and a half hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.
From downtown Hartford the cabins are 300 road miles north: I-91 to Springfield, the Massachusetts Turnpike west over the Berkshires, the Thruway's Berkshire connector and I-90 to Albany, then the Northway and the High Peaks roads through Keene and Saranac Lake. That is about five hours behind the wheel on an open road and five and a half to six with a fuel stop and groceries, and the route reaches the cabins from the south without passing through Malone village. Connecticut guests have come mostly in winter, for New Year's Eve, a Valentine's weekend, an anniversary and the skiing at Titus Mountain.
The route in stretches
The miles come from OpenStreetMap routing from downtown Hartford to the cabins, and the times are for an open road with no stops, so add your breaks and whatever traffic Springfield and Albany hand you. Albany is a little over a third of the way.
| Stretch | Roads | Places along it | Miles | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown to the Turnpike | I-91 north | Windsor, Windsor Locks, East Windsor, Enfield, Longmeadow, Springfield | 33 | 35 minutes |
| The Turnpike to New York | I-90 west, the Massachusetts Turnpike | West Springfield, Westfield, Russell, Blandford, Becket, Lee, Stockbridge, West Stockbridge | 45.5 | 40 minutes |
| The state line to Albany | The Thruway's Berkshire connector, then I-90 | Canaan, Chatham, Schodack, East Greenbush | 32 | 30 minutes |
| Across Albany | I-787 and NY 7 | Menands, Colonie | 9.5 | 10 minutes |
| The Northway to exit 30 | I-87 north | Clifton Park, Saratoga Springs, Queensbury, Lake George, Chestertown, Schroon Lake, North Hudson | 98 | 1 hour 30 minutes |
| Exit 30 to Saranac Lake | US 9, NY 73, Old Military Road, NY 86 | Keene Valley, Keene, the Cascade Lakes, Ray Brook | 38.5 | 45 minutes |
| Saranac Lake to the cabins | NY 86, NY 30, county and town roads | Gabriels, Paul Smiths, Meacham Lake, the Town of Duane | 43 | 55 minutes |
I-91 to Springfield
I-91 leaves downtown northbound and runs through Windsor, Windsor Locks, East Windsor and Enfield before it enters Massachusetts at Longmeadow, about 20 miles from Hartford. Twelve miles on, past downtown Springfield, I-91 meets the Massachusetts Turnpike in West Springfield, at the Pike's exit 45; head west there, 33 miles and about 35 minutes into the trip on a clear road.
The Turnpike has no toll booths. Overhead gantries read an E-ZPass, and a car without one is photographed and billed by mail through Pay By Plate MA, at a higher rate plus a 60-cent fee for each invoice, which arrives 7 to 10 business days later. The Thruway's Berkshire connector in New York is cashless too. A New York E-ZPass pays the lowest rate there; tags from other states pay more, and by 2027 the same per-mile rate as Tolls by Mail, whose bills come 30 to 45 days after the trip with a $2 fee on each. Bring a transponder if you have one, which spares you the mailed bills and their fees.
Over the Berkshires on the Turnpike
West of Westfield the Turnpike climbs about 1,200 feet in eight miles, from about 270 feet near Russell to about 1,460 feet at the Blandford service plaza, and tops out at about 1,720 feet in Becket before dropping to about 900 feet near Lee. Hartford sits at about 60 feet, so this is the first place on the trip where the weather can change under you.
Two westbound service plazas sit on this stretch, and the state lists both as open around the clock. Blandford, about 16 miles past the I-91 junction, has Gulf fuel and diesel, a Gulf Express store and McDonald's, and it is the place to fill the tank. Lee, near exit 10 about 20 miles farther on, has McDonald's, a convenience store and electric-car chargers. The state extended the Gulf and McDonald's leases at its plazas through June 30, 2027, while it picks a new operator to modernize them, with new leases due to start on July 1, 2027, so expect changes from the summer of 2027.
The Turnpike leaves Massachusetts at West Stockbridge, 78 miles from Hartford, and becomes the New York State Thruway's Berkshire connector, which runs past Canaan and Chatham to exit B1 at Schodack. The route stays on I-90 from there into Albany, then takes I-787 north and NY 7 west to the Northway in Colonie, about two hours from Hartford with no stops.
North of Albany
From Colonie the route follows the Northway for 98 miles to exit 30 at North Hudson, then US 9 and NY 73 through Keene Valley and Keene, past the Cascade Lakes and around Lake Placid on Old Military Road, and NY 86 to Saranac Lake. The drive from Albany covers those miles stop by stop, with the climbs on NY 73, and the drive from Lake Placid covers the last hour past Paul Smiths and Meacham Lake.
Shop before that last hour. The Grand Union at 156 Church Street in Saranac Lake, right on the route, is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, and the Price Chopper at 1930 Saranac Avenue in Lake Placid, a short way off the route, is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. North of Saranac Lake this route reaches the cabins before it reaches another supermarket, and the last miles are county and town roads where the host's directions beat a phone map, as getting to the cabins explains.
Where to stop
| Stop | Location | What it has | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blandford service plaza | Turnpike westbound, 16 miles past I-91 | Gulf fuel and diesel, a Gulf Express store, McDonald's | Open 24 hours |
| Lee service plaza | Turnpike westbound, near exit 10 | McDonald's, a convenience store, electric-car chargers | Open 24 hours |
| Grand Union, Saranac Lake | 156 Church Street | Groceries on the route | 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily |
| Price Chopper, Lake Placid | 1930 Saranac Avenue | Groceries and beer, open late | 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily |
Hours change with the seasons, so check each stop's own page before you count on it. The Northway's own stops, between Albany and exit 30, are on the Albany page, and the drive from Saratoga Springs has the middle hour exit by exit.
The Vermont way
The other way north follows I-91 up the Connecticut River valley to White River Junction and then I-89 to Swanton, where it picks up the route from Boston around the top of Lake Champlain. It is about 348 road miles, 48 more than the Albany way, and about half an hour longer on a clear road, with no Albany traffic and no Turnpike tolls.
In Massachusetts, I-91 runs past Holyoke, Northampton, Deerfield and Greenfield. It enters Vermont at Guilford, and Vermont's welcome center for northbound drivers stands at mile marker 5.6, open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in a post-and-beam barn that opened in 1999. From there the interstate passes Brattleboro, Putney, Westminster, Rockingham, Springfield and Windsor and meets I-89 at White River Junction, a village in the town of Hartford, Vermont, about 146 miles and two and a quarter hours from its namesake. The drive from Boston covers I-89 north from there, with the fuel stop at Berlin and the crossing at Rouses Point, and the drive from Burlington has the Grand Isle ferry, which crosses the lake around the clock all year, for anyone who would rather take the boat.
Take this way if you want Vermont stops on the way, if a Friday in Albany looks bad on the map, or if you are meeting friends from Boston on I-89. A third way crosses Lake Champlain farther south, on the Lake Champlain Bridge at Crown Point, which opened in November 2011: I-91 to Rockingham, VT 103 through Chester, US 4 past Rutland, VT 22A north through Orwell and Shoreham and VT 125 to the bridge, then NY 9N to Keene and NY 73. It is about 312 road miles, but most of them are two-lane roads, and it takes about three-quarters of an hour longer than the Albany way, so keep it for a daylight drive in good weather.
From elsewhere in Connecticut
Ten Connecticut towns appear in the cabins' guest reviews, and not all of them are near Hartford. OpenStreetMap routing gives these as the shortest ways in:
| From | Main roads | Road miles | Driving, about |
|---|---|---|---|
| Torrington and the Litchfield Hills | CT 63 through Goshen, US 7 into Sheffield, Massachusetts, local roads through Egremont and Alford, and NY 22 to the Berkshire connector at Canaan, New York | 271 | 4 hours 50 minutes |
| Danbury | I-84 west into New York, the Taconic State Parkway north, NY 82, NY 9H and US 9 to I-90 and Albany | 299 | 5 hours 10 minutes |
| New Haven | CT 8 north through Waterbury and Torrington, then MA 8 north and US 20 west to the Turnpike at Lee | 316 | 5 hours 35 minutes |
| New London and the shoreline | CT 85, CT 11 and CT 2 to Hartford, then this route | 344 | 5 hours 50 minutes |
All four join the Northway at Albany and finish the way the Hartford route does, through Keene and Saranac Lake.
The drive by season
Winter
This route climbs three times: the Turnpike to about 1,720 feet in Becket, the Northway from about 250 feet at Saratoga Springs to about 1,000 feet past Schroon Lake, and NY 73 to about 2,200 feet near the Cascade Lakes, the high point of the whole drive. A storm that brings rain to Hartford can bring snow to all three. Before a winter departure, check CT roads for Connecticut, Mass511 for the Turnpike and 511NY for the New York side. When snow is falling north of Albany, the Plattsburgh ending is the steadier choice: stay on the Northway to exit 37 and take NY 190 and US 11 west, which adds about 27 miles and 20 to 25 minutes on a clear road and keeps you on the interstate and on lower ground longer; the Albany page describes it. The winter driving guide has the advice on tires, plowing and a winter kit.
Fall color
In New York's foliage report for the week of October 7 to 13, 2026, Saranac Lake, on this route, was at peak with 95 percent change, while Malone, the village nearest the cabins, had reached 50 percent and was close to peak. The Columbus Day long weekend runs to Monday, October 12, in 2026, inside that report's week, and to October 11 in 2027, so book early for it. The fall foliage guide follows the color around the cabins.
Holidays
Connecticut guests' reviews include a New Year's Eve and a Valentine's weekend, so the departure table below includes Christmas week and New Year's Eve. In 2027 Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on January 18 and Washington's Birthday on February 15, the Monday after Valentine's Day, which makes both of those weekends three days long for many people.
By train or plane
The Vermonter
Amtrak's Vermonter is the one train from Hartford into Vermont. On the October 2026 timetable it leaves Hartford at 2:11 p.m. or 2:17 p.m., depending on the day, stops at Windsor Locks a few minutes later, and reaches Essex Junction, near Burlington, at 8:18 p.m. and St. Albans at 8:50 p.m. Southbound, it leaves Essex Junction at 9:44 a.m. and reaches Hartford at 3:22 p.m. or 3:27 p.m. From the Essex Junction station it is about 5 road miles to the rental desks at Burlington's airport, where Avis stays open until 12:15 a.m., but the cabins are another 114 road miles from Essex Junction, so the train works best with a night in Burlington and a Saturday-morning drive. Amtrak changes these times with the seasons; check the timetable for your dates.
Flying
No airline flies from Bradley International to Burlington, Plattsburgh, Lake Clear or Massena. Burlington's nonstop list has no Hartford flight, Plattsburgh's flight page lists none either, and Lake Clear and Massena are served from Boston, with a JFK flight at Lake Clear as well. From Hartford the drive is the way to come; the airports guide covers the flights for friends who are coming from farther away.
A Friday evening arrival
Check-in at every cabin is after 4 p.m., and the last morning ends with checkout before 11. From Hartford, allow about five and three-quarter hours to the cabin door with a stop on the Turnpike and a grocery stop in Saranac Lake, and compare that with the sunset at the cabins:
| Day | Sunset at the cabins | Leave Hartford by, to arrive in daylight |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday, December 23, 2026, Christmas week | 4:20 p.m. | About 10:30 a.m. |
| Thursday, December 31, 2026, New Year's Eve | 4:26 p.m. | About 10:30 a.m. |
| Friday, February 12, 2027, Valentine's Day weekend | 5:21 p.m. | About 11:30 a.m. |
| Friday, March 26, 2027 | 7:17 p.m. | About 1:30 p.m. |
| Friday, May 14, 2027 | 8:17 p.m. | About 2:30 p.m. |
| Friday, July 23, 2027 | 8:33 p.m. | About 2:45 p.m. |
A plan for a noon start on a clear road:
- Noon. North on I-91.
- About 12:35 p.m. Onto the Turnpike at West Springfield.
- About 12:50 p.m. The Blandford plaza: fifteen minutes for fuel and coffee.
- About 1:30 p.m. The New York line.
- About 2 p.m. Albany and the Northway.
- About 3:35 p.m. Exit 30 and NY 73.
- About 4:20 p.m. Saranac Lake: twenty-five minutes at the Grand Union, and a text to the host with your arrival time.
- About 5:40 p.m. The cabin.
A 5 p.m. start after work, with the stop at Blandford, brings you to Lake Placid around 9:15 p.m., too late for the Grand Union in Saranac Lake, which closes at 9, so shop at the Lake Placid Price Chopper, which stays open until 11, and expect the cabin around 10:40 p.m., later with Friday traffic. The Aviator's and the Tiny Home's listings ask for quiet from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m., so keep the arrival quiet.
What Connecticut guests come for
The host names Connecticut among the places guests come from, and ten of the cabins' reviews were written by Connecticut guests, five of them from towns around Hartford: East Hartford, Wethersfield, Enfield, Granby and Bristol. Seven of the ten are dated between December and February, and several mark an occasion. An East Hartford couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary at The Modern Tiny Home in January 2021. A Granby guest wrote of "our romantic valentines getaway with the hot tub and fireplace" at The Modern Pine in February 2025. A guest from Enfield came to The Aviator for New Year's Eve and wrote, in January 2025:
Was looking for a last minute NYE escape and this place was PERFECT! Secluded feeling, woodsy, beautiful.
The same guest suggested day trips to Lake Placid, 52 road miles south, and to Montreal, across the border to the north; the Lake Placid day trip and the Montreal day trip cover both, and crossing the border has the papers Montreal calls for.
Others came for one event or for the snow. A Bristol guest stayed at The Modern Tiny Home for the solar eclipse in April 2024 and wrote, "we had a great view of the event." A guest from East Lyme, on the shoreline, wrote in December 2024 that the Tiny Home "was a mere 5min from Titus Mountain where our family spent the days skiing"; the Titus guide has the lifts and the night skiing, and the couples page suits the anniversary and Valentine's trips. All three cabins sleep four, and each has its own hot tub, fire pit and full kitchen; none is meant for children under 10.
Heading home
Leave at the 11 a.m. checkout and you are home in Hartford around 4:30 p.m. on a clear road with one stop. If you go home the Vermont way, the state's Hartford Welcome Center, on I-91 southbound in Hartford, Vermont, south of the I-89 interchange, is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day; Guilford's center serves the northbound side. On the Albany way home, the Turnpike has eastbound service plazas of its own at Lee and Blandford.
Questions
How long is the drive from Hartford to the cabins?
300 road miles from downtown, about five hours on a clear road and five and a half to six with a fuel stop and groceries. The route is I-91 to Springfield, the Massachusetts Turnpike and the Thruway's Berkshire connector to Albany, the Northway to exit 30, then NY 73 through Keene, NY 86 to Saranac Lake and NY 30 north.
What tolls are on the way from Hartford?
Two tolled roads, both without booths. On the Massachusetts Turnpike a car without an E-ZPass is billed by mail through Pay By Plate MA, at a higher rate plus 60 cents an invoice. On the Thruway's Berkshire connector in New York a New York E-ZPass pays the lowest rate, and by 2027 other states' tags pay the same rate as Tolls by Mail, whose bills carry a $2 fee. Bring a transponder if you have one.
Is the Vermont route through Brattleboro a good alternative?
It is about 348 road miles, 48 more than the Albany way, and about half an hour longer on a clear road: I-91 north to White River Junction, I-89 to Swanton and US 11 west from Rouses Point. Take it for Vermont stops or to skip Albany; the drive from Boston covers I-89.
Can we take the train from Hartford?
Amtrak's Vermonter leaves Hartford a little after 2 p.m. every day and reaches Essex Junction, near Burlington, at 8:18 p.m. The rental counters at Burlington's airport are about 5 road miles from the station, and the cabins are another 114 road miles, so the train suits a night in Burlington and a Saturday drive.
Where do we buy groceries on the way?
In Saranac Lake or Lake Placid, about an hour before the cabins. The Grand Union at 156 Church Street in Saranac Lake, on the route, is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the Price Chopper at 1930 Saranac Avenue in Lake Placid is open until 11 p.m. This route reaches the cabins before Malone; see groceries and supplies.
When do Connecticut guests come?
Mostly in winter: seven of the ten reviews from Connecticut guests are dated between December and February. They came for New Year's Eve, a Valentine's weekend, a first anniversary and the skiing at Titus Mountain, about 3.5 road miles from the cabins, and one Bristol guest came for the April 2024 solar eclipse.
