Getting there

From Watertown to the cabins

About 118 road miles, about two and a quarter hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.

Watertown is 118 road miles from the cabins, about two and a quarter hours, and nearly all of it is one road: US 11, north-east through Gouverneur, Canton and Potsdam to Malone. There is no border to cross and no interstate to join, and the villages along the way have gas, coffee and a riverside spot to stretch your legs. This page takes the road town by town, with the stops, what lake-effect snow does to the first stretch, the slower scenic routes, and a plan for leaving after work on a Friday.

US 11 from Watertown to Malone

US 11 leaves downtown Watertown on Mill Street, a stretch it shares with NY 12, and swings through a roundabout on the north side of the city. From there you stay on it for almost the whole trip. It runs north-east through Jefferson County, crosses St. Lawrence County and enters Franklin County, and in Malone you leave it at Duane Street, which becomes County Route 25 and heads south toward the cabins. The last few miles are town roads and a gravel drive, so follow the host's directions for them; getting to the cabins explains why.

The time splits unevenly. Potsdam is about 48 road miles from the cabins, so by the time you reach it you have covered roughly 70 of the 118 miles, in about an hour and a quarter. From Potsdam it is about 40 minutes to Malone, and about 20 more from Malone to your door. Add one stop for gas and coffee and plan on two and a half hours from your driveway to the cabin.

Fort Drum and the first half hour

North of the city, US 11 passes through the Town of Le Ray and the village of Evans Mills, near Fort Drum. The post's main gate, the Lt. Gen. Paul Cerjan gate, is off I-781 and US 11, so a trip that starts on post picks up this route near the gate instead of going back into Watertown. From Evans Mills the road continues through the towns of Philadelphia and Antwerp, the last stretch in Jefferson County, before it crosses into St. Lawrence County on the way to Gouverneur.

This first half hour is the part of the drive closest to Lake Ontario's snow bands, which have their own section below.

Gouverneur

Gouverneur is the first village in St. Lawrence County, about half an hour from Watertown, and US 11 runs along its Main Street. Stewart's has two shops on that street, one at 242 East Main Street and one at 90 West Main Street. The East Main shop sells regular gas and 91-octane premium without ethanol, along with coffee, hot food and ice cream, and it has indoor booths and seasonal picnic tables. Stewart's says every one of its shops with pumps has restrooms and free air for tires, which makes either Gouverneur shop an easy first stop if you left with a low tank or a long list.

Past Gouverneur the road crosses the Town of De Kalb on the way to Canton, about 25 minutes on.

Canton

In Canton, US 11 becomes Main Street and shares the road with NY 68 through the village. On its way into downtown it crosses the Grasse River by way of a string of islands, and the two small parks there make a good leg stretch. Canton Island Park, at the southern tip of Willow Island, has a parking area, a paved walkway and a picnic area. Heritage Park, at 2 Main Street, covers Coakley Island and the 4.4-acre Falls Island, the heart of the village's 19th-century manufacturing district. Its trail runs about a third of a mile around the two islands, past Cascade Falls, with signs on the river's history, and it starts at the King Iron Bowstring Bridge, built in the 1870s and restored in 2007. A nonprofit, Grasse River Heritage, owns and keeps the park, which is open all year. Fifteen minutes here and you are back in the car.

Canton is also where Frederic Remington, the painter and sculptor, was born, on October 4, 1861. His family moved to Ogdensburg in the early 1870s, and the museum that holds his work is there, on the river road described in the drive from Kingston.

For fuel, the Stewart's at 115 East Main Street is on the route through the village. It sells regular gas and 91 premium non-ethanol, and has coffee, an ice cream counter, restrooms and booths. A second Stewart's is at 32 Gouverneur Street.

Potsdam

Potsdam is about 15 minutes past Canton and about 48 road miles from the cabins. In the village, US 11 does not run straight through: it comes in on Maple Street, bends onto Sandstone Drive, follows Market Street for a short stretch and Elm Street east, and leaves town on Lawrence Avenue, so watch the route signs at each corner. A phone map may send you straight along Maple Street and Main Street instead, which comes out on Elm Street just the same. For a late drive, the Stewart's at 26 Maple Street is the stop to remember. It is open 24 hours, sells regular gas, diesel and 91-octane non-ethanol, and has EV chargers, Tesla's among them, as well as restrooms, coffee and indoor booths.

If you want a walk, Ives Park, the village park on the banks of the Raquette River, is in the middle of downtown and can be reached from Maple and Main Streets. It has a large gazebo, benches and bench swings, and picnic tables. Stewart's has a second Potsdam shop at 124 Market Street.

Potsdam to Malone

East of Potsdam, US 11 runs through the towns of Stockholm and Lawrence, crosses into Franklin County at Moira and passes through the village of Brushton and the Town of Bangor before Malone. Brushton is about 21 road miles from the cabins, and its Stewart's, at 1271 Washington Street, is on the route, with gas, diesel, 91 non-ethanol, coffee and restrooms.

US 11 reaches Malone from the west as State Route 11, past the Walmart Supercenter at 3222 and Aldi at 3324, and then becomes West Main Street. Price Chopper, at 53 Finney Boulevard, lists its hours as 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day. All three come before Duane Street, your turn south. Each cabin has a full kitchen, and groceries and supplies lists what is already in it, so you only shop for the rest.

Where to stop on US 11

A short list for the car, west to east:

  • Gouverneur. Stewart's at 242 East Main Street or 90 West Main Street, for gas and coffee half an hour out.
  • Canton. Heritage Park and Canton Island Park on the Grasse River islands, right on Main Street, for a short walk past Cascade Falls, and Stewart's at 115 East Main Street.
  • Potsdam. Stewart's at 26 Maple Street, open 24 hours, with diesel and EV chargers, and Ives Park on the Raquette River.
  • Brushton. Stewart's at 1271 Washington Street, about 21 road miles from the cabins.
  • Malone. Groceries on the way in, and the last full set of shops before the cabins.

Lake-effect snow around Watertown

Watertown is near the east end of Lake Ontario, where the National Weather Service office in Buffalo tracks lake-effect snow, and when the wind lines up a band can sit right over the city and Fort Drum. The office writes up each lake-effect storm, and the last two winters show what that means for the start of this drive:

  • January 26 to 31, 2026. About 114 hours of lake snow left 26.0 inches at Watertown and 16.9 at Fort Drum.
  • January 19 to 21, 2026. A band settled over the Watertown area and, as the wind turned west, snow fell at up to three inches an hour across southern Jefferson County and the Tug Hill. Interstate 81 stayed open, but several cars slid off it.
  • December 29, 2025. A narrow band of heavy snow formed from near Watertown to Fort Drum in the early evening before sweeping south across the Tug Hill.
  • December 11 to 13, 2024. A band moved north from the Tug Hill to Watertown and Fort Drum and stretched far inland across the northern Adirondacks, with significant accumulations all the way into Franklin County, where the cabins are.

US 11 heads north-east, away from the lake, so a band over Watertown or Fort Drum can make the first half hour the slowest part of the trip. The December 2024 storm is the reminder that the snow sometimes follows you all the way. The Weather Service write-ups describe bands drifting north and south over hours, so when one is parked over the city, leaving after it moves on can spare you the worst of it. Read the forecast for Watertown and for Malone before you set out.

The cold is the other half of a Watertown winter. Its 1991 to 2020 normals for January are a high of 29.8°F and a low of 10.0°F. Tires, the kit to keep in the car and New York's winter rules are in winter driving.

Fall, spring and summer on US 11

After an October 2021 stay, a Watertown guest called the place "a perfect spot to experience changing leaves and gorgeous sunsets." Columbus Day, a federal holiday, falls on Monday, October 12, in 2026 and on Monday, October 11, in 2027, so book early for that weekend. For timing the color, see fall foliage in the northern Adirondacks.

Spring brings the black flies to the woods around the cabins from mid-May; bugs, ticks and black flies covers when they peak and what keeps them off.

Summer is the easy season for this drive. On Friday, July 2, 2027, the sun sets at the cabins at 8:46 p.m., so you can leave Watertown after a full workday and still unpack in daylight. Late fall is the opposite: on Friday, November 20, 2026, sunset at the cabins is at 4:24 p.m. and dusk is over by 4:56, so an after-work drive is dark from Watertown on. October through December is also when New York's deer crashes peak, with movement highest at dusk and dawn, so keep the speed down on the two-lane stretches.

Other ways from Watertown

The St. Lawrence River road

On a summer afternoon you can trade speed for the river. Head north to Alexandria Bay, take NY 12 east along the St. Lawrence to Morristown, then NY 37 through Ogdensburg and on toward Massena before cutting south to US 11 for the last stretch to Malone. It adds most of an hour. The stops on that stretch, from the Remington museum in Ogdensburg to the Seaway's visitor center at the Eisenhower Lock in Massena, are on the drive from Kingston page, which uses the same road.

Through the park on NY 3

The other long way goes east on NY 3 across the western Adirondacks, past Cranberry Lake to Tupper Lake, then north on NY 30 past Paul Smiths and Meacham Lake. It adds about an hour, and it puts The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, about 57 road miles from the cabins, on your way; see The Wild Center. Save it for daylight.

Flying

Watertown International Airport, in Dexter, has American Eagle service to Philadelphia: twelve round trips a week on 50-seat Embraer jets, under a federal contract that runs through January 31, 2028. That is useful for getting home to Watertown and no help for this trip. If friends are flying in to meet you at the cabins, airports near the cabins compares the options.

No border

The whole drive stays in New York, so nobody in the car needs a passport. If you plan a day in Montreal or Ontario from the cabins, the papers and the open crossings are on crossing the border.

A Friday after work

Check-in at all three cabins is after 4 p.m., and The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home keep quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., so a Friday arrival any time from late afternoon to about 9:30 p.m. works. A plan for leaving Watertown at 5:

  1. 5:00 p.m. Leave Watertown on US 11 with a full tank, or fill up at Stewart's in Gouverneur half an hour later.
  2. About 6:00. Canton. Take ten minutes on the river islands if there is light, or keep going.
  3. About 6:15. Potsdam. The 24-hour Stewart's on Maple Street is the coffee stop.
  4. About 7:00. Malone. Groceries at Price Chopper, open until 11 p.m., or at Aldi or Walmart on the way in. Message the host your arrival time while your phone has a signal.
  5. About 8:00. At the cabin, with time to light the grill before quiet hours.

Leaving at 3:30 on a short Friday moves everything up an hour and a half and gets you to the cabin around 6:30, which in summer leaves the whole evening in daylight. In winter, build in slack for snow around Watertown and for the last miles in the dark.

Going home on Sunday

Checkout is before 11 a.m. at all three cabins. On the way back, the order of stops reverses: Malone for breakfast and gas, then Brushton, Potsdam and Canton. Where to eat covers Malone's breakfast places. If a lake-effect warning is up for Jefferson County on Sunday afternoon, a band near Watertown would meet you on the last half hour, so check the forecast before you leave the cabin, not when you reach Potsdam.

What Watertown guests come for

Watertown is one of the home towns that comes up most often in the cabins' reviews, and one Watertown family has come back to The Modern Tiny Home again and again since 2021. After a May 2025 stay they wrote:

This was the fifth visit my family and I have made to the tiny home and it never disappoints.

Their reviews keep returning to the same few things: peace and quiet, the woods, a dark sky for stargazing and the lights that shine into the trees around the cabin at night. If the sky is the draw for you too, read stargazing from the hot tub. Another Watertown guest, at The Modern Pine in August 2024, put it this way: "Very private, the hot tub was relaxing, fire pit was great."

Guests from farther up US 11 say much the same: a Canton guest wrote in December 2022 that the little cabin with its hot tub was "perfect for us on our Christmas holiday trip." One of the Watertown family's reviews also counted it a plus that "there's a casino not that far away." The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort is on NY 37 in Hogansburg, north-west of Malone, open until 1 a.m. most nights and until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; check its hours before you go.

Once you are there

A weekend from Watertown leaves time for the things the cabins sit next to. Titus Mountain's base lodge is about 3.5 road miles away (skiing Titus), the C7 snowmobile corridor runs close by (snowmobiling the C7), and the Almanzo Wilder Farm, the boyhood home in Farmer Boy, is a short drive east of Malone in season (the Wilder farm). All three cabins sleep four and each has its own hot tub; the cabins page has the photos and the booking links.

Questions

How long is the drive from Watertown to the cabins?

118 road miles, about two and a quarter hours of driving, almost all of it on US 11 through Gouverneur, Canton and Potsdam to Malone, then County Route 25 south. With a stop for gas and coffee, plan on two and a half hours, and more when lake-effect snow is falling around Watertown or Fort Drum. The whole drive stays in New York, so there is no border to cross.

Where can we stop for gas between Watertown and Malone?

Stewart's has shops on the route in Gouverneur, at 242 East Main Street, in Canton, at 115 East Main Street, in Potsdam, at 26 Maple Street, and in Brushton, at 1271 Washington Street, plus two in Malone. The Potsdam shop is open 24 hours and sells diesel and 91-octane non-ethanol, and it has EV chargers, Tesla's among them.

Is there a faster road than US 11?

No, US 11 is the direct route. The scenic choices take longer: the St. Lawrence road through Alexandria Bay, Morristown and Ogdensburg adds most of an hour, and NY 3 past Cranberry Lake to Tupper Lake, then NY 30 north, adds about an hour. Both make good daytime drives in summer and fall; the Kingston page has the river-road stops.

What should we do if lake-effect snow is falling in Watertown?

Check the National Weather Service forecast for Watertown and for Malone before you leave. Bands off Lake Ontario are narrow and drift north and south over hours, so waiting for one to move off the city can spare you the worst of it. US 11 heads away from the lake, but a December 2024 band reached Franklin County too. Winter driving has the tires and the kit.

Can we fly from Watertown instead?

Not usefully. Watertown International, in Dexter, has American Eagle flights to Philadelphia, twelve round trips a week, so no flight shortens this trip. If friends are flying in to join you, airports near the cabins compares Lake Clear, Plattsburgh, Massena, Ogdensburg, Montreal and the rest.

Where do we buy groceries on the way in?

In Malone, before you turn south. Coming in from the west on US 11 you pass the Walmart Supercenter at 3222 State Route 11 and Aldi at 3324, and Price Chopper, at 53 Finney Boulevard, is open every day from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. All three come before Duane Street. Groceries and supplies lists what the cabin kitchens already have.

What time can we check in?

After 4 p.m. at all three cabins, and checkout is before 11 a.m. The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home keep quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., so a Friday arrival from Watertown any time from late afternoon to about 9:30 p.m. works well.
