Towns & History

Malone, New York

Malone, ten road miles north of the cabins: village layout, groceries, pharmacies, hospital, fuel, restaurants open in 2026, parks, events, a half day in town.

Malone is the Franklin County seat and the town the cabins lean on. The supermarkets, pharmacies, hospital, gas stations, restaurants and public library are all here, about ten road miles north of the cabins by County Route 25, in a village on the Salmon River just north of the Adirondack Park boundary. This page is the working map: where things are, what keeps which hours, and how to spend a few hours in town. The stories behind the old buildings are on the Malone history page.

How the village is laid out

Main Street is US 11, and it runs east and west through the middle of the village. In the middle of downtown it crosses the Salmon River, which flows north through town, and the stone shell of the Horton Gristmill stands beside the river within sight of the crossing. Most errands come down to which side of that bridge you need.

West of the river, West Main Street has the Franklin County Courthouse at number 355, the village office at 343, Cafe Nouveau, Riverside Steak and Seafood and Giuseppe's Pizza. Duane Street, the road you drive in on, comes out on this side, by the courthouse. Farther west, past Walgreens at the corner of Finney Boulevard, Main Street becomes State Route 11, the commercial strip with Aldi, the Walmart Supercenter, the chain restaurants, a second Kinney Drugs and more gas stations. Price Chopper sits just off Main Street on Finney Boulevard.

East of the river, East Main Street has the post office, the downtown Kinney Drugs, the visitor center beside Arsenal Green, the First Congregational Church, gas stations and, near its east end, the Franklin County Fairgrounds. Elm Street carries NY 30 north from Main Street past the Wead Library, and Park Street, off Elm, has the hospital. Beyond the fairgrounds, Route 11 runs on east toward Burke, with Donovan's Steak and Ale and Bokie's Drive-In on the way out of town.

The Town of Malone, the larger township around the village, reaches south to Titus Mountain, which is about seven miles south of the village and three and a half road miles from the cabins. North of town, NY 30 runs to the Trout River border crossing, about twenty-one road miles from the cabins. That crossing has been closed to U.S.-bound traffic since June 1, 2026, for rebuilding, and is expected to stay closed until about May 2028; traffic into Canada still goes through. Read crossing the border before you plan a day in Quebec.

The drive in from the cabins

From the cabins, County Route 25, called Duane Road out in the country, runs north into the village and becomes Duane Street. Main Street is about ten road miles away, roughly twenty minutes; guests in the reviews put town at fifteen to twenty minutes. On the way in, Duane Street passes Memorial Recreation Park and Rotary Lake, then the Anselm Lincoln House, an 1830 house on a bluff above the river, before it reaches West Main Street near the courthouse.

Price Chopper is about 10.3 road miles from the cabins, the downtown Kinney Drugs about 10.1, Aldi about 11.1 and the Walmart Supercenter about 11.6, so a full supply run that takes in the Route 11 strip adds only a mile or two. Golf Course Road, off Duane Street on the way in, leads to the 36 holes of Malone Golf Club, about nine road miles from the cabins. Downtown parking is mostly on the street along Main Street and the side streets, with some lots behind the buildings. Main Street is also the regional through route, so it carries truck traffic as well as shoppers.

Groceries, beer and wine

Price Chopper, at 53 Finney Boulevard, is the full supermarket: bakery, deli, meat and seafood departments, produce, a beer section with New York brews, catering and curbside pickup. It is open every day from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. This Price Chopper has no pharmacy, so take prescriptions to one of the drugstores below. Aldi, at 3324 State Route 11, and the Walmart Supercenter, at 3222 State Route 11, are on the west strip. The groceries page lists what the cabin kitchens already have, so you only shop for the rest.

New York supermarkets sell beer but not regular wine or spirits, which come from liquor stores. Bills to put wine on grocery shelves died in committee when the 2026 legislative session ended in June, so the rule still holds. Malone has two liquor stores: The Jug Store at 44 Finney Boulevard, on the same street as Price Chopper, and Harison Wine & Liquor at 632 East Main Street, near the fairgrounds.

From mid-May to early October, the Malone Farmers Market sets up on Wednesdays from noon to 5 p.m. under the pavilion at the Malone Town Office, across Route 11 from Walmart. In 2026 its season was set for May 13 to October 7.

Pharmacies

  • Kinney Drugs, 485 East Main Street, downtown. The store opens at 8 a.m. and stays open into the evening; the pharmacy counter closes from 1 to 1:30 p.m. for lunch.
  • Kinney Drugs, 3400 State Route 11, on the west strip, with the same half-hour lunch break at the pharmacy counter.
  • Walmart Supercenter pharmacy, 3222 State Route 11. It opens at 8 a.m. on weekdays, keeps shorter hours on weekends and closes for a half hour at 1:30 p.m.
  • Walgreens, 305 West Main Street at Finney Boulevard. The store is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., but its pharmacy counter was closed in early October 2026, with no pharmacy hours posted. Do not count on it for a refill.

Hours can differ on weekends and holidays. Call before you count on a Sunday refill, and bring enough of any prescription to cover the whole stay.

The hospital and walk-in care

UVM Health's Alice Hyde Medical Center, at 133 Park Street on the north side of the village, has the nearest emergency department, open 24 hours every day. It is about ten and a half road miles from the cabins. For something that cannot wait but is not an emergency, the hospital's walk-in clinic at 134 Park Street sees children and adults with minor illnesses and injuries, no appointment needed, with posted hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day of the week; call 518-481-2800 to confirm before you drive in. In an emergency, call 911. The health and safety page has the other numbers worth saving to your phone before you leave home.

Fuel and car charging

Fill the tank in town before you head back south. Stewart's Shops, the upstate convenience chain that makes its own ice cream, has two village stores with gas pumps, at 554 East Main Street and 289 West Main Street. The Mobil at 593 East Main Street, a Maplefields store, is open 24 hours and sells diesel. On the west strip, Parkway Express, a Valero at 3385 US Route 11, also sells diesel and has an ATM.

For electric cars, the New York Power Authority's EVolve NY program runs a single 100 kW fast charger with CCS and CHAdeMO plugs in the Franklin County Courthouse lot at 355 West Main Street, open around the clock. Drivers there reported app and card-reader trouble in 2026, so check a charging app for status before you rely on it. A ChargePoint station with two plugs is listed at the same address. The Aldi on State Route 11 has four public Red E fast-charging stalls at 320 kW with CCS plugs, open since February 2026 with no posted hours, and Ellis Chevrolet at 551 East Main Street has a 62 kW ChargePoint fast charger listed as open 24 hours. Check the app before you go; the EV charging guide lists every charger near the cabins.

Breakfast, coffee and lunch

These places were operating in 2026. Small-town hours shift with the seasons, so call before a special trip.

  • Foothills Lodge and Cafe, 15 Church Place, a lodge with a full cafe on its first floor, open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Cafe Nouveau, 367 West Main Street, next to the courthouse. Breakfast and lunch from 8 a.m., dinner Thursday to Saturday, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The menu runs from chicken and waffles and panini to espresso drinks, and it takes orders online for pickup.
  • The Tailwagger Cafe, 206 Brand Road, northwest of the village. Soups, salads and sandwiches, with meats smoked on site; open Wednesday to Friday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of its profits go to local charities and animal welfare groups.
  • Jreck Subs, 290 West Main Street, and Dunkin', 619 East Main Street, for something quick.

Dinner and a drink

  • Riverside Steak and Seafood, 387 West Main Street, just west of the river. Steak and seafood dinners from 4 p.m., seven days a week.
  • Donovan's Steak and Ale, on State Route 11 east of the fairgrounds. Steakhouse plates, a prime rib sandwich called The Artie, craft beer on tap and a deck. In 2026 it served dinner Tuesday to Saturday, from 4 p.m. midweek and 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and was closed Sundays and Mondays.
  • Mo's Pub and Grill, 3357 State Route 11, on the west strip. A sports bar with TVs all through the room, 24 beers on tap and barbecue from meats it smokes itself.
  • The Pines Tap and Table, 135 Bare Hill Road, northwest of the village. Burgers, wings, tacos and pizza on dough made in the kitchen, eight draft beers, and DJs, bands and community events; open Monday to Saturday.
  • Giuseppe's Pizza, 369 West Main Street, open seven days.
  • The Grille Room at Malone Golf Club, in the golf season; see the golf club.

The fast-food chains line State Route 11 west of the village, with King's Wok Buffet in the Aldi plaza. A fuller list with phone numbers is on where to eat. One guest summed up the town's range in a review:

location was good malone the town has a lot to offer for amenities which is rare for the adk

Sunday and Monday hours

Sundays and Mondays are when visitors find doors closed in a small town. These were the posted hours in fall 2026; holidays and the off-season change them, so treat this as a starting point and call.

Price Chopper, Walgreens and the 24-hour Mobil keep the same hours every day, so a late Sunday arrival can still stock the kitchen. On a Monday night, Riverside, Mo's, The Pines and Giuseppe's are the dinner choices in town.

Rotary Lake and the recreation park

Malone Memorial Recreation Park, on Duane Street south of downtown, covers more than 100 acres, and it is on your way in from the cabins. Rotary Lake sits at its center; swimming at the park now happens in the pool near the Duane Street entrance, opened in 2025, and there is a new splash pad. Around it are a waterfront walkway, paved and unpaved trails, playgrounds, tennis courts, softball diamonds, a volleyball court, a gazebo and pavilion, picnic tables and public restrooms, with plenty of daytime parking. In autumn the lake is the birders' spot in town, when thousands of migrating snow and Canada geese come down on it each day; bring a spotting scope if you have one.

In winter the village's hockey rink, the Malone Civic Center at the end of State Street, generally has ice from October to May. Its calendar lists public skating sessions, free and open to all ages, most often on weekends and around the holidays, and the 2025-26 season had sessions into April. Large events sometimes take the ice, so check the schedule before you bring skates.

The river downtown

Main Street sits above the Salmon River, and from the street you look down on the Whittlesey Dam and the river running north between old mill buildings. The Horton Gristmill, a stone mill from 1853 listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, is visible from Main Street; today it is a roofless shell. Mill Street runs along the river beside it.

This stretch is about to change. Malone won $10 million from the state's Downtown Revitalization Initiative in March 2025, and in May 2026 the state named the ten projects it will fund. One of the two largest, at $2.67 million, will turn Mill Park into a riverfront overlook with better public access to the water. For trout fishing, public fishing rights and the park's pool, see the Salmon River guide.

North of the village, off Brand Road at the northern end of the town, the river backs up into Lamica Lake, a 16.5-acre pond behind the Macomb Dam. When the dam was relicensed, its owner added a recreation trail and a better boat launch there. Just below the dam, the Salmon River runs into a deep stone gorge, the most dramatic stretch of the river in the town of Malone.

Arsenal Green and the visitor center

Arsenal Green, on East Main Street at Clay Street, is the village green: an open lawn under mature trees, with a bandstand. In summer 2026 the Malone Chamber of Commerce ran free concerts there on Friday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., starting July 3, with local and regional musicians; bring a chair. The green takes its name from the stone arsenal the state built on the site in 1812.

The Malone visitor center and Chamber of Commerce is next to the green at 497 East Main Street, open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A rack to the left of the building holds maps, brochures and restaurant menus around the clock, which helps on a weekend or an evening. The post office, a yellow-brick building from 1934, is across the street at 482 East Main Street, at the corner of Washington Street.

The Wead Library

The Wead Library, at 64 Elm Street just north of Main, is the public library for the village. It is open Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday until 7 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It offers wireless printing, scanning and meeting space, and it closes whenever the Malone Central School District closes or goes remote for weather, a useful signal on a stormy morning.

The library began on Christmas Eve 1881, when Mary Kasson Wead announced an endowment in memory of her husband, Samuel C. Wead, and his son, Colonel Frederick Fuller Wead, who was killed in battle at Cold Harbor, Virginia, in the Civil War. It opened at 12 Elm Street. The present building, designed by Frederick Wead, a Boston architect from the family, is faced with Crippen stone from the town of Burke, and volunteers carried the books from the old building to the new one.

Events in town through the year

  • Mid-May to early October: the farmers market, Wednesday afternoons by the Town Office on Route 11.
  • Summer Fridays: free concerts on Arsenal Green, 6 to 8 p.m.; the 2026 series began July 3.
  • August: the Franklin County Fair fills the fairgrounds on East Main Street for nine days; in 2026 it ran August 8 to 16. See the fair guide.
  • After Thanksgiving: in recent years the Parade of Lights has filled the Saturday after Thanksgiving, starting at 5 p.m. with a tree lighting at the fairgrounds and a parade down Main Street from the courthouse to the fairgrounds.
  • Winter: free public skating at the Civic Center, and skiing a few minutes from the cabins at Titus Mountain.

Dates move from year to year; check visitmalone.com or the visitor center before you build a weekend around one. The events calendar covers the whole region.

What is changing downtown

The ten projects named in May 2026 add up to $9.7 million. Besides the Mill Park overlook, they include $2.73 million for new sidewalks, street trees, lighting and public art on Main Street; $1.7 million to turn 43 Pearl Street into the Foothills Arts and Cultural Center, with a kitchen, cafe, gallery and performance space; $780,000 to put a grocery store with apartments above it at 468 to 470 East Main Street; a gelato and pastry shop called La Creme in a vacant West Main Street storefront; and a new front, outdoor seating and an inside bar for Giuseppe's Pizza. These were announced as plans in May 2026; ask in town what has opened since.

One landmark is gone. The Flanagan Hotel, a 1914 hotel on Main Street that had stood empty for nearly thirty years after a fire, was torn down in April 2026, along with the Lashomb building next to it. The mayor has talked about parking, shops and apartments for the site.

Flying in

Pilots can land two miles west of the village at Malone-Dufort Airport, an unattended general aviation field with two asphalt runways, 3,994 feet and 3,250 feet long, 100LL fuel and a common traffic frequency of 122.8. There are tie-downs and no maintenance shop. One of the cabins, The Aviator, has aviation decor. For airline options, see airports near the cabins.

Children and dogs in town

With children, the recreation park is the stop: playgrounds, the pool and splash pad in summer, and room to run on the trails. Bokie's Drive-In, at 3960 US Route 11 east of town, has been part of Malone since 1956, when it began as a couple of ice cream windows. It is a seasonal drive-in with burgers, hot dogs, fries, poutine and ice cream, open in season from 11 a.m. and closed Mondays, and it serves a doggy ice cream. It was still open for the season in early October 2026; check before a late-fall visit. The cabins take pets for a fee; on hot days, leave the dog at the cabin rather than in the car while you shop. See bringing your dog.

A half day in town

  1. 9:00. Leave the cabins on County Route 25.
  2. 9:20. Breakfast at Foothills Lodge and Cafe on Church Place, or at Cafe Nouveau from Thursday to Monday.
  3. 10:15. Park near the courthouse and walk east along Main Street: look down at the dam and the gristmill from the river crossing, then on to Arsenal Green, the visitor center rack and the post office. Elm Street and the Wead Library are a block or two north. The history page has a longer walk with the stories.
  4. 11:30. If you booked ahead, a tour of the House of History on Milwaukee Street, a few minutes' walk south of Arsenal Green by way of Clay Street.
  5. 12:30. Lunch at the Tailwagger Cafe on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday, or subs from Jreck eaten at a picnic table by Rotary Lake.
  6. 1:30. Errands on the way out: the pharmacy, Price Chopper or the Route 11 strip, a liquor store if you want wine, and gas.
  7. 2:30. Back at the cabin with the groceries put away and the hot tub warm.

In August, swap the afternoon for an evening at the fair. In summer, the Almanzo Wilder Farm is about thirteen road miles from the cabins and pairs with a morning in town. For more ideas close to home, see towns and history and the map.
