From Buffalo to the cabins
About 333 road miles, about five and three-quarter hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.
Buffalo is 333 road miles from the cabins, about five and three-quarter hours of driving, and that makes it a full day. Roughly the first 140 miles are the Thruway east to Syracuse, followed by a little over an hour of I-81 to the Fort Drum exit beyond Watertown and then US 11 through Canton and Potsdam to Malone and the county roads south. This page breaks the day into its parts, with the Thruway's service areas and tolls, the snow from two Great Lakes, where to break the drive, the early train, and why a long weekend works better than a short one.
How the day breaks down
Buffalo is 333 road miles from the cabins and Syracuse 189, so about 140 of your miles are the stretch from Buffalo to Syracuse, nearly all of it Thruway. The Thruway's own mileposts agree: exit 51, where the drive joins it, is at milepost 421.6, and exit 36, where you leave it for I-81, is at 282.9.
| Part | Roads | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Buffalo to Syracuse | NY 33, the Thruway from exit 51 to exit 36 | About two and a quarter hours |
| Syracuse to US 11 | I-81 north past Pulaski and Watertown, I-781 | About an hour and 10 minutes |
| US 11 east | Evans Mills to Malone, by way of Canton and Potsdam | Roughly 1 hour 40 minutes |
| The last miles | Duane Street and County Route 25 out of Malone, then town roads | Roughly 20 minutes |
With no traffic the parts add up to about five and a half hours; plan on five and three-quarters, and more in snow. With two stops for fuel and food, and the groceries in Malone, the door-to-door day runs closer to six and a half.
Getting onto the Thruway
From downtown, the Kensington Expressway, NY 33, runs out past the east side to the Thruway at exit 51, the Thruway's exit for Route 33 and the airport. Take the ramp for I-90 East and Albany. From the Northtowns, I-290 reaches the Thruway at exit 50, about a mile farther east.
Expect work at the start. The Thruway Authority is rebuilding the 6.5 miles of I-90 from just east of exit 50 through exit 53, in both directions, a corridor that carries about 132,000 vehicles a day. The project includes pavement repairs, drainage, a concrete median barrier and more clearance under the Route 33 overpass, and it is expected to finish in late 2027. Crews work around the clock from 6 a.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Saturday, so a weekday departure may meet lane closures, traffic shifts and short stoppages, and the authority closed two of exit 51's ramps for a weekend in August 2026. Check the Thruway's travelers' map or 511NY before you leave.
Thruway service areas going east
East of Buffalo the Thruway runs across Genesee County past Pembroke, Batavia and Le Roy, skirts Rochester's southern suburbs at Henrietta, and crosses Ontario, Seneca and Cayuga counties to Syracuse. The eastbound service areas on that run are all open 24 hours:
| Service area | Milepost | From exit 51 | Food | Fuel and charging |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pembroke | 397 | About 25 minutes | Burger King, Popeyes, Panera, Dunkin' | Sunoco, 8 EV chargers |
| Scottsville | 366 | About 50 minutes | Burger King, Dunkin' | Mobil, 4 EV chargers |
| Clifton Springs | 337 | About an hour and 20 minutes | Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A, Auntie Anne's, Starbucks | Sunoco, 6 EV chargers |
| Port Byron | 310 | About an hour and 45 minutes | Burger King, Dunkin' | Mobil |
Each one also has an Applegreen store. Port Byron is the last eastbound service area before exit 36, so fill the tank there or at Clifton Springs if you plan to drive I-81 without stopping. The DeWitt service area comes after exit 36 and is no use on this trip.
Tolls
The Thruway is cashless, and a car pays by the mile, so on this drive the tolls add up. At the base rate a car with a New York E-ZPass pays 4.5 cents a mile, and 4.9 cents from January 1, 2027; by 2027, drivers with an out-of-state tag or no tag at all pay 8.6 cents a mile. With no tag, a camera reads the plate and the bill arrives in the mail 30 to 45 days later.
Snow from two lakes
From Buffalo, a winter drive can meet lake-effect snow twice: Lake Erie's bands at the start and Lake Ontario's on I-81. Here is what the Buffalo end has done lately, from the Weather Service's storm archive:
- January 28 and 29, 2026. On the Wednesday evening a band of moderate to heavy snow ran across the city, the airport and western Genesee County. On the Thursday afternoon a multi-vehicle pileup closed part of the Thruway between Pembroke and Batavia, right on this route, for more than 12 hours.
- December 12, 2024. A band sat over the Southtowns with two to three feet of snow just south of the city and little or none just north of it, and stretches of the Thruway south of Buffalo, Route 219 and Route 400 were closed for hours at the peak.
- December 29, 2025, to January 3, 2026. A narrow band of moderate to heavy snow formed across the heart of the Buffalo metro area and ran east into Genesee County, and over five days a wide area from the Southtowns and Genesee County south got one to two feet.
Lake Erie's snow also changes over the winter. By late January 2026 ice covered much of the lake, and the Weather Service noted that the ice kept that storm's Lake Erie snow mostly light, though pockets of open water still threw short bursts of heavy snow across the Buffalo metro area. In the same storm, Lake Ontario's bands left 32.9 inches just south of Oswego, so the deepest snow that week fell off the second lake, near the I-81 half of the drive.
The sharp edges are the useful part. A band south of the city can leave the Kensington Expressway and the Thruway east of the airport clear, while a band over the airport puts snow on the first hour of the drive. Read the Buffalo forecast for Erie and Genesee counties and for Oswego County before you leave, because the second lake waits on I-81. The drive from Syracuse covers the I-81 snow belt between Syracuse and Watertown, and winter driving has the tire advice and the kit list.
When the warning is for Oswego County and it will not lift, there is a way around: stay on the Thruway past exit 36 to Albany and take the Northway north. From Buffalo that adds about two and a half hours to an already long day, so on most such days it is better to wait for the band to move or to leave a day later.
Where to break the drive
The halfway point, by the clock, comes on I-81 north of Syracuse. Three breaks work well:
- Port Byron or Clifton Springs, on the Thruway, for a meal before Syracuse.
- Pulaski, on I-81 about half an hour north of exit 36, where a 24-hour Byrne Dairy & Deli with gas, diesel and a deli sits by the exit. The Syracuse page lists the other stops near the I-81 exits.
- Canton or Potsdam, on US 11, for the last stop before Malone. The drive from Watertown covers both towns, with their Stewart's shops and the river parks in Canton.
At Watertown there is also the scenic choice: NY 3 across the park by way of Harrisville and Cranberry Lake, then NY 30 from Tupper Lake north past Meacham Lake. It adds about an hour, which on a drive from Buffalo makes it a second-day road: if you overnight in Watertown, it is a good way to spend the morning.
If you cannot leave until evening, sleep in Syracuse or Watertown and drive the North Country part in the morning. That splits the drive into two easy pieces and puts US 11 in daylight, which is when you want it.
Book more than a weekend
A two-night weekend from Buffalo means roughly eleven and a half hours of driving for two nights at the cabin. Guests from Buffalo have noticed. One who stayed at The Modern Tiny Home in November 2020 wrote:
Definitely book more than the weekend if you can because you'll be wishing you stayed longer.
A third night changes the trip. Leave on a Thursday, or come home on a Monday, and the long drive takes up a smaller share of the stay. Whatever the day, leaving at the 11 a.m. checkout has you back in Buffalo by about 5 or 6 p.m. with stops. If you want to stay longer still, long stays and remote work covers what that looks like at the cabins.
Holiday weekends
Thanksgiving is the weekend to watch. In 2024 the season's first lake-effect storm began the day after Thanksgiving and left three to six feet over the long weekend. New York closed the Thruway west of Lackawanna, the Thruway Authority banned commercial traffic from exit 46 at Rochester to the Pennsylvania line, and the governor declared states of emergency for six western counties, Erie and Genesee among them, and for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego. The Buffalo and Watertown areas both got significant snow that weekend, so both lakes put snow on this drive at once. Thanksgiving falls on November 26 in 2026 and November 25 in 2027.
On the busiest holiday weekends the state pauses construction lane closures on its highways; for Thanksgiving 2025 the pause ran from 6 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, to 6 a.m. Monday, December 1, though some work behind permanent barriers and emergency repairs could go on. In 2027 the federal long weekends include Washington's Birthday on February 15, Memorial Day on May 31 and Independence Day, observed on Monday, July 5. A long weekend gives you the third night that this drive deserves.
Fall color from Buffalo
The color comes to the cabins weeks ahead of Buffalo. In the state's I LOVE NY report for the week of October 7, 2026, the Buffalo observer counted 25 percent change, golden yellows with bursts of red in the maples, while the observers near the cabins had Malone near peak and Saranac Lake at peak. The report comes out every Wednesday afternoon through the fall. If the leaves are the reason for the trip, plan by the North Country's calendar, not by the trees on your street; fall foliage in the northern Adirondacks has the usual timing. Columbus Day weekend runs October 10 to 12 in 2026 and October 9 to 11 in 2027.
Going home on Sunday
With an 11 a.m. checkout you will be back on the Thruway by mid-afternoon. Heading west from exit 36, the Thruway has five westbound service areas before Buffalo, all open 24 hours: Warners, Junius Ponds, Seneca, Ontario and Clarence. The last two are the ones that Rochester drivers never see. Ontario, at milepost 376, has a Burger King and a Starbucks with Sunoco fuel and four EV chargers, and Clarence, at milepost 412, about 10 miles before exit 51, has a Burger King, a Popeyes and a Dunkin' with Sunoco fuel and six EV chargers. The drive from Rochester describes the first three. If a lake-effect warning is up for Erie or Genesee County on Sunday afternoon, the last hour of the drive is the one that will meet it.
Without a car
The train can do it, if you are up early. On Amtrak's October 2026 timetable, the daily Empire Service train 280 departs Exchange Street at 4:18 a.m. and Depew at 4:35 and is due at Albany-Rensselaer at 10:05. Change there for the Adirondack, scheduled out at 11:45 a.m. and into Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m. Pick up a car from Avis, Budget or Enterprise at the Plattsburgh airport for the 61 road miles that remain. Every later train from Buffalo gets to Albany after the Adirondack has gone.
Heading home, leave the Adirondack at Schenectady, where it is due at 6:38 p.m., and catch the westbound Lake Shore Limited there at 7:33; it reaches Depew at 12:39 a.m., just after midnight. Ride on to Albany-Rensselaer, due 7:40, and that train will have left at 7:05, so the first one west is the Maple Leaf at 10:10 the next morning, due at Depew at 3:25 p.m. and Exchange Street at 3:40. Timetables change, so check Amtrak for your dates.
No airline links Buffalo with the small airports near the cabins. Cape Air connects Lake Clear only with Boston and JFK, Boutique Air flies Massena to Boston, Plattsburgh's airlines serve Florida, Myrtle Beach and Dulles, and Breeze flies Ogdensburg to Raleigh-Durham, so flying means connecting through one of those cities and renting a car at the end. Airports near the cabins compares them.
A Friday from Buffalo
You can get in from 4 p.m., but two of the cabins, The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home, ask for quiet from 10 at night. A 5 p.m. start from Buffalo would put you at the door near 11, so take the afternoon off and leave at noon:
- Noon. Kensington Expressway to the Thruway at exit 51, through the work zone.
- About 12:30. Pembroke service area, for a quick lunch if you skipped it.
- About 2:30. Exit 36 and I-81 north.
- About 3:45. Off I-81 at Fort Drum and onto US 11.
- About 5:20. Malone. Price Chopper, at 53 Finney Boulevard, is the big grocery stop and closes at 11 p.m.; tell the host your arrival time before you head south on County Route 25.
- About 6:05. At the cabin.
Late in the year the day ends early. The sun is down at the cabins at 4:19 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving, and dusk is over by 4:52, so even a noon start finishes US 11 in the dark; leave at 10 if you can. In August the same noon start arrives with daylight to spare, since the sun does not set at the cabins until 8:06 p.m. on Friday, August 13, 2027.
What Buffalo guests come for
Buffalo is home to six of the cabins' reviewers so far, with four more from Orchard Park, Hamburg, Eden and Jamestown. They have come in summer, fall and winter, and a Buffalo guest at The Modern Pine in January 2024 found the cabin "Not a far drive from town but still secluded."
The reviews keep coming back to three things. One is the hot tub and fire pit, which a Buffalo guest at The Modern Pine in July 2023 called "a definite plus." Another is the woods: a guest from Orchard Park found "Beautiful little place in the woods" in August 2022, and the November 2020 guest found the short trail at The Modern Tiny Home that leads to a pond. The third is the dark sky: a Hamburg guest at The Aviator in July 2024 left a tip about turning off all the lights at some point and looking up at the stars, which is the subject of stargazing from the hot tub. A Buffalo guest in October 2024 added that the location "was great to visit the Adirondacks as well"; fall foliage in the northern Adirondacks has the timing for an October trip.
After hours of interstate and US 11, the final stretch is a few miles of rural road, covered in getting to the cabins. The three cabins, four guests each and a hot tub apiece, are on the cabins page.
Questions
How long is the drive from Buffalo to the cabins?
333 road miles, about five and three-quarter hours: the Thruway east from exit 51 to exit 36 at Syracuse, I-81 north past Pulaski and Watertown to the Fort Drum exit, then I-781 and US 11 through Canton and Potsdam to Malone and County Route 25 south. With two stops and groceries in Malone, plan on about six and a half hours door to door.
Where are the service areas between Buffalo and Syracuse?
Going east, the Thruway has four, all open 24 hours: Pembroke, about 25 minutes from exit 51, Scottsville, Clifton Springs, with a Shake Shack, a Chick-fil-A and a Starbucks, and Port Byron, the last one before exit 36. Each sells fuel. On I-81, the 24-hour Byrne Dairy at the Pulaski exit is the next good stop.
Is there construction on the Thruway near Buffalo?
Yes. A $64 million project is rebuilding 6.5 miles of the Thruway from just east of exit 50 through exit 53, in both directions, with completion expected in late 2027. Crews work from 6 a.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Saturday, and drivers may meet lane closures, traffic shifts and short stoppages. Check the Thruway's travelers' map or 511NY before you leave.
How does lake-effect snow affect the drive from Buffalo?
It can hit twice: Lake Erie's bands near Buffalo and Lake Ontario's on I-81 in Oswego County. In January 2026 a pileup closed part of the Thruway between Pembroke and Batavia for more than 12 hours. Read the National Weather Service forecasts for Erie, Genesee and Oswego counties and check 511NY before you go; winter driving covers tires and the kit.
Should we split the drive from Buffalo into two days?
If you cannot leave before evening, yes. A 5 p.m. start reaches the cabins near 11 p.m., after quiet hours begin at The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home, so sleep in Syracuse or Watertown and drive US 11 in the morning. Better still, book a third night: one Buffalo guest wrote that you will wish you had stayed longer.
Can we take the train from Buffalo?
Yes, if you can be at the station before dawn. The 4:18 a.m. Empire Service from Exchange Street, 4:35 from Depew, reaches Albany-Rensselaer at 10:05, and the Adirondack leaves there at 11:45 for Plattsburgh, arriving at 4:02 p.m. You need a rental car from the Plattsburgh airport for the rest. Coming home, change at Schenectady for the Lake Shore Limited, due at Depew at 12:39 a.m.; ride on to Albany instead and you wait for the next morning's train.
How do the Thruway tolls work?
There are no toll booths. Cameras read your E-ZPass or your plate, and Tolls by Mail bills arrive 30 to 45 days later. You pay by the mile: the base New York E-ZPass rate is 4.5 cents a mile, rising to 4.9 cents on January 1, 2027, while out-of-state E-ZPass and Tolls by Mail go to 8.6 cents a mile by 2027.
