From Glens Falls to the cabins
About 141 road miles, about two and three-quarter hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.
Downtown Glens Falls is 141 road miles from the cabins, about two and three-quarter hours by car. You join the Northway at exit 19 on Aviation Road, ride it 56 miles to exit 30, then take NY 73 through Keene and Lake Placid, NY 86 through Saranac Lake and NY 30 north. Queensbury is a few minutes closer and Lake George village closer still, about two and a half hours out. For anyone in Warren County, the cabins make a Friday-night trip: leave after work and be in the hot tub before ten.
The route from Glens Falls
The interstate does the first hour, and two-lane state roads do the rest. The times below are for a clear road with no stops, measured from Centennial Circle downtown.
| Leg | Roads | Miles | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown to the Northway | Glen Street (US 9) north, then Aviation Road (NY 254) to exit 19 | 3 | 5 minutes |
| Exit 19 to exit 30 | I-87, the Adirondack Northway | 56 | 55 minutes |
| Exit 30 to Keene | US 9 north for two miles, then NY 73 | 14 | 15 minutes |
| Keene to Lake Placid | NY 73 over Cascade Pass, then Old Military Road | 14 | 20 minutes |
| Lake Placid to Saranac Lake | NY 86 | 10 | 15 minutes |
| Saranac Lake to Paul Smiths | NY 86 through Gabriels | 12 | 15 minutes |
| Paul Smiths to the cabins | NY 30 north past Meacham Lake, then County Routes 41 and 25 and the town roads | 31 | 40 minutes |
That is about two hours and 45 minutes of driving. The roads in order: US 9, NY 254, I-87, US 9, NY 73, Old Military Road, NY 86, NY 30, County Route 41, County Route 25. For the last few turns past County Route 25, use the host's directions; getting to the cabins explains why.
Glens Falls, Queensbury and Lake George starts
Downtown Glens Falls and South Glens Falls
From Centennial Circle, the quickest line is Glen Street north to Aviation Road and exit 19, which the ramps sign as NY 254 for Glens Falls and Hudson Falls. Exit 18, signed for Glens Falls and Corinth, is the other city exit. From South Glens Falls or Moreau, exit 17 is the US 9 interchange; going north from there you pass the state's Adirondacks Welcome Center, which sits between exits 17 and 18 in the northbound lanes and keeps listed hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Queensbury
Queensbury is 138 road miles from the cabins, about two hours and 40 minutes. From the upper US 9 side of town, the quickest ramp is exit 20, the NY 149 interchange signed for Fort Ann and Whitehall; nearer the city line, exit 19 on Aviation Road is just as quick.
Lake George village
Lake George village is 132 road miles from the cabins, about two and a half hours. From Canada Street, go north to exit 22, the US 9 and NY 9N interchange signed for Lake George Village and Diamond Point, and get on the Northway there; exit 21 serves NY 9N to Lake Luzerne and the south end of the village. From the village it is 49 miles of interstate to exit 30. If you are staying farther up the west shore, the Northway is reached from Bolton Landing at exit 24.
The Northway north of Lake George
North of Lake George, the exits in order are 23 for Warrensburg and Diamond Point, 24 for Bolton Landing, 25 for NY 8, Chestertown and Hague, 26 for Pottersville, 27 and 28 for Schroon Lake, 29 for Newcomb and North Hudson, and 30 for US 9 and NY 73, signed Keene and Keene Valley. From exit 19 to exit 30 is about 56 miles and close to an hour at highway speed.
The stops on the Northway itself are state rest areas; for food and fuel you leave at an exit. The stops people from Saratoga and Albany use on this stretch work just as well for you, and both of those pages list them exit by exit: the Stewart's in Schroon Lake between exits 27 and 28, the day-use area and fast chargers at Frontier Town by exit 29, and the High Peaks rest area between exits 29 and 30. See the drive from Saratoga Springs for the middle hour. From Glens Falls you are only an hour into the trip at exit 30, so most people can wait for Keene.
NY 73 from exit 30 to Lake Placid
At exit 30, turn north on US 9 for about two miles, and NY 73 bears off to the left toward Keene Valley. This is the mountain part of the drive: past Chapel Pond, through Keene Valley and down to Keene, where NY 9N joins for a short stretch through the hamlet. West of Keene, NY 73 climbs through Cascade Pass between Pitchoff and Cascade mountains, past the two Cascade Lakes, at about 2,200 feet the highest point of the route. Downtown Glens Falls sits at about 340 feet, so you gain about 1,850 feet between your driveway and the pass.
Keene has the last pumps on NY 73, at the Stewart's on the main road, which also has EV chargers. The drive from Albany walks this road stop by stop, with the parking rules at Chapel Pond and the Adirondack Mountain Reserve. Past the Cascade Lakes the road runs by the Olympic sliding and cross-country venues at Mt Van Hoevenberg, and the quick line bears left on Old Military Road to skirt the village and meet NY 86.
Saranac Lake and NY 30 north
NY 86 runs west from Lake Placid through Ray Brook to Saranac Lake, about 98 miles from Glens Falls and about an hour and 50 minutes in. Saranac Lake is the place to buy groceries and top up the tank: north of it, this route has no supermarket and no gas station before the cabins. NY 86 goes on through Gabriels to Paul Smiths, where you turn right onto NY 30, the Adirondack Trail, for 24 miles north past Meacham Lake. County Route 41 and County Route 25 bring you to the cabins' corner of the Town of Bellmont. The drive from Lake Placid covers this last hour in detail.
The Plattsburgh way
The low route stays on the Northway past exit 30 all the way to exit 37 in Plattsburgh, about 105 miles of interstate from exit 19. Take NY 3 west for a mile, turn right on NY 190, the Military Turnpike, for about 22 miles, then left on US 11 west through Chateaugay to the east edge of Malone, where Andrus Street and River Road lead south to County Route 25. From downtown Glens Falls it is 168 road miles, and on a clear road it takes about 20 minutes longer than the NY 73 route; from Lake George village it is 159 miles, with the same difference.
Why take it? It never climbs over the High Peaks, so it is the better evening drive from November to March and the safer one when a storm is forecast for the mountains. It also passes the exits for Keeseville and Ausable Chasm, and Malone becomes your last town, with its supermarkets and the hospital about ten road miles north of the cabins. The drive from Plattsburgh covers the Military Turnpike and US 11 with their fuel stops.
NY 374 through Dannemora
A second road west from Plattsburgh is NY 374. From NY 190, it turns off through Dannemora and runs west by Lyon Mountain to US 11 in Chateaugay. It is about the same distance as the Military Turnpike, a little under 170 miles from Glens Falls in all, and about half an hour slower than the NY 73 route on its two-lane miles. Take it for the scenery on a clear day, not in a storm.
A scenic drive through Lake Placid
The quick line skirts Lake Placid. Stay on NY 73 into the village instead, follow Main Street along Mirror Lake and pick up Old Military Road on the far side: it adds about a mile and five minutes before any stop. On the way in, NY 73 passes the Olympic Jumping Complex on Cascade Road, and in the village the big municipal lot across Main Street from the Olympic Center charges by the hour in the daytime and has EV chargers. A walk around Mirror Lake is a flat, paved 2.7-mile loop; with an hour to spare, start at the public beach on Parkside Drive and walk as far as you like. The Lake Placid and Whiteface day trip has the restaurants and the parking rules, and the Olympic sites guide has the venues.
A stop of an hour in Lake Placid turns a 2-hour-45 drive into close to four hours, so on a Friday it works best in summer, when daylight lasts past 8 p.m. On the way home on a Sunday it fits any season.
The long way by Route 28 and Route 30
From Glens Falls there is a third way that never touches NY 73 or Plattsburgh. Leave the Northway at exit 23 for Warrensburg, follow US 9 through the village and turn left on NY 28 to North Creek and Indian Lake. At Indian Lake, NY 30 joins NY 28 to Blue Mountain Lake; from there NY 30 runs north through Long Lake to Tupper Lake, and on to Paul Smiths and the usual road north. It is about 155 road miles and three and a half to four hours on a clear road, up to an hour more than the main route, almost all of it on two-lane roads through the central Adirondacks. Save it for a long summer day, with daylight for the lakes.
Fuel, food and a stretch
- Before you leave. Fill the tank and buy anything special in Glens Falls or Queensbury. On the main route the next supermarkets are in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, about 90 miles north.
- On the Northway. Schroon Lake, between exits 27 and 28, is the easy stop if you need one, and Frontier Town at exit 29 has fast chargers for electric cars. See the Saratoga page for what each has.
- On NY 73. The Stewart's in Keene has gas, diesel, EV chargers, coffee and restrooms. Chapel Pond and the picnic tables between the Cascade Lakes are short daylight stops.
- Last chance. Saranac Lake has two supermarkets, an Aldi on Lake Flower Avenue and a Grand Union on Church Street, and the last gas on the route. Lake Placid has a Price Chopper and a Hannaford.
- On the Plattsburgh way. Plattsburgh at exit 37 has everything, and Malone has a Price Chopper, an Aldi and a Walmart; the groceries page lists Malone's stores and hours.
The drive by season
Winter
Glens Falls and Lake George get their forecasts from the National Weather Service office in Albany; the High Peaks and the cabins are covered by the office in Burlington, Vermont, so read both before a winter trip. The place to watch is Cascade Pass on NY 73, where the road is at its highest. When snow is forecast for the mountains, use the Plattsburgh way. Check 511NY, the state transportation department's traffic and travel information service at 511ny.org, before you leave. The winter driving guide has the tires, the car kit and the deer advice, and Malone's fast chargers if you drive electric.
At home, the Lake George Winter Carnival fills the village on weekends: in 2026 it ran every Saturday and Sunday from February 7 to March 8, with fireworks on Saturday nights, and village street parking filled early. Check the 2027 dates before you plan a Friday departure through the village.
Spring and summer
Americade, the motorcycle touring rally based in Lake George, is set for June 2 to 5, 2027, with an opening celebration on June 1. Lake George village is at its busiest that week, so if you leave from the village, allow extra time to reach exit 22. Ironman Lake Placid, on a Sunday in July, closed the eastbound side of NY 73 between Lake Placid and Keene from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 2026; if your checkout falls on race day, go home the Plattsburgh way.
Fall
The Adirondack Balloon Festival launches from Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury on a weekend in September; in 2026 it ran September 17 to 20, starting with an evening in Crandall Park, and admission was free. Color peaks in the mountains first: in the state's foliage report for the second week of October 2026, Saranac Lake was at peak while Queensbury had only about half its color, so a fall weekend at the cabins can catch the peak before it reaches home. Columbus Day weekend, October 9 to 11 in 2027, fills the trailhead lots along NY 73, and the Plattsburgh way avoids them. The fall foliage guide follows the color north.
Flying, the train and the bus
Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury, the Warren County airport, has no airline service; people who fly use Albany International, 44 road miles south of downtown Glens Falls, under an hour down the Northway. For anyone living here that settles it: drive. Albany only matters when friends fly in to join you. The drive from Albany lists its airlines and rental counters, and their route north passes your exits, so meet them at a Queensbury exit and drive up together.
The closest station is Fort Edward-Glens Falls, at 70 East Street in Fort Edward, a platform beside the old Delaware and Hudson depot with no shelter. Amtrak's Adirondack stops there northbound at 12:56 p.m. and reaches Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m., on the timetable published in October 2026; southbound it leaves Plattsburgh at 2:45 p.m. and is due at Fort Edward at 5:33. From Plattsburgh you still have 61 road miles and need a rental car; the counters are at the airport, so see airports near the cabins before you book. Greyhound runs two buses a day from Glens Falls to Plattsburgh, from East Washington Street by the Rite Aid at 124 Ridge Street; the daytime one was listed at 1:20 p.m. in October 2026, so check the schedule for your date.
A Friday evening from Glens Falls
Check-in is after 4 p.m. From Glens Falls the door-to-door trip, with twenty minutes for groceries in Saranac Lake, is about three hours. To drive NY 73 and NY 30 in daylight, count back from sunset at the cabins:
| Friday | Sunset at the cabins | Leave Glens Falls by |
|---|---|---|
| November 6, 2026 | 4:39 p.m. | 1:30 p.m. |
| December 4, 2026 | 4:17 p.m. | 1:10 p.m. |
| January 8, 2027 | 4:34 p.m. | 1:25 p.m. |
| March 5, 2027 | 5:50 p.m. | 2:45 p.m. |
| May 14, 2027 | 8:17 p.m. | 5:10 p.m. |
| June 18, 2027 | 8:45 p.m. | 5:40 p.m. |
| September 10, 2027 | 7:17 p.m. | 4:10 p.m. |
An after-work plan: leave downtown at 4:30, reach exit 30 by about 5:30, Keene by 5:45 and Saranac Lake by about 6:20. Shop, and you are at the cabin at about 7:35. From May to mid-August that is all in daylight. From November through February it puts the mountains in the dark, so either leave at lunchtime or take the Plattsburgh way, which keeps you on the interstate until Plattsburgh. Even a 6:30 start gets you in by about 9:35, before the 10 p.m. quiet hours at The Aviator and the Tiny Home. Coverage near the cabins depends on your carrier, so text the host your arrival time from Saranac Lake or Malone.
Why Warren County guests come north
People from Glens Falls and Lake George already live at the edge of the Adirondacks, so the north end is about different things. Titus Mountain's lifts are about 3.5 road miles from the cabins, with night skiing; see the Titus guide. The C7 snowmobile corridor runs near the cabins, and the snowmobile guide has the trails. In summer the St. Regis Canoe Area, the only designated canoe area in the state, has its first put-ins 32 to 35 road miles south, and in August the Franklin County Fair in Malone has run since the 1850s. Each of the three cabins sleeps four, with its own hot tub, fire pit and full kitchen; they suit couples, friends, and families with children 10 and older.
The drive home
Checkout is before 11 a.m., which puts you back in Glens Falls by early afternoon on the main route. For a slower Sunday, stop in Lake Placid on the way, or go home the Plattsburgh way and break the trip at Ausable Chasm by exit 34; the Ausable Chasm guide has the trails and the season. In summer, the Route 28 way home through Tupper Lake and Blue Mountain Lake makes a day of it.
