From Rochester to the cabins
About 250 road miles, about four and a half hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.
Rochester is 250 road miles from the cabins, about four and a half hours of driving. The main way never touches the Thruway: NY 104 east through Webster and Wayne County, south of the Lake Ontario shore, NY 3 through Fulton to Mexico, NY 104 again to I-81, I-81 north past Pulaski and Watertown, then US 11 across the North Country to Malone. Going by the Thruway and Syracuse takes about as long. This page compares the two, lists the stops on the lake road, shows what lake-effect snow has done to both in the last two winters, and ends with the train and a Friday plan.
The lake road or the Thruway
From downtown, Portland Avenue takes you north to NY 104, and NY 104 heads east out of the city. That is the lake road, and it is the route behind the 250 road miles. The other choice is I-490 east to the Thruway at Victor, the Thruway east to exit 36 at Syracuse, and I-81 north from there. The two meet where NY 104 reaches I-81, about six miles east of the village of Mexico, and from that interchange to the cabins they are the same road.
| The lake road | The Thruway | |
|---|---|---|
| Roads to I-81 | NY 104, NY 3, NY 104 | I-490, I-90, I-81 from Syracuse |
| Driving time to the cabins | About four and a half hours | About four and a half hours |
| Distance | About 250 miles | About 270 miles |
| Tolls | No Thruway tolls | Thruway tolls, cashless |
| Food and fuel | Byrne Dairy in Fulton, open 24 hours | Service areas at Clifton Springs and Port Byron |
The lake road is the default: it is about 20 miles shorter and has no tolls. The Thruway earns its place in two situations: when lake-effect bands are lined up along the lake road from Wayne County into Oswego County, and when you would rather keep to interstate after dark.
NY 104 through Wayne County
NY 104 leaves Rochester as an expressway through Irondequoit and Webster, about 15 minutes from downtown to the village of Webster. East of Webster it carries on as a divided four-lane highway through the Town of Ontario into Williamson, and from Williamson it is mostly a two-lane road, 55 mph on the open stretches, through Sodus, Huron, Butler and Wolcott. Wolcott is a little under an hour out. Past Wolcott the road crosses the northern tip of Cayuga County into Oswego County.
This is fruit country. Wayne County's apple farms cultivate more than 23,685 acres, nearly half of New York's commercial apple acreage, and in October the county's Apple Tasting Tour runs at farm markets, cideries and wineries across it. In 2026 the tour runs from October 1 to October 30, with a Signature Tasting Weekend from October 9 to 12, and six of its eleven stops have Williamson or Sodus addresses, towns NY 104 crosses. Check each stop's hours before you turn off.
NY 3 through Fulton to Mexico
In the village of Hannibal the route leaves NY 104 for NY 3, which runs through Granby into the city of Fulton, where it becomes West Broadway. Fulton is the stop on this road: Byrne Dairy & Deli has two shops on Route 3 there, at 798 West Broadway and at 1013 Emery Street, both listed as open 24 hours with gas, a deli counter and ice cream. You reach them about an hour and a quarter from downtown Rochester.
From Fulton, NY 3 continues through Volney and Palermo into the village of Mexico. There you turn right onto Main Street, which is NY 104; NY 3 turns north again after a block, and you stay on NY 104 east for about six miles to I-81. Rochester to the interstate takes about an hour and three-quarters.
You can also stay on NY 104 the whole way, through the city of Oswego and east to Mexico. It is a few miles shorter on the map and takes about the same time, and Byrne Dairy has a 24-hour shop with gas at 97-99 Bridge Street in Oswego.
| Stretch | Roads and places | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown to Webster | NY 104 through Irondequoit | About 15 minutes |
| Webster to Wolcott | NY 104 through Ontario, Williamson, Sodus, Huron, Butler | About 40 minutes |
| Wolcott to Fulton | NY 104, then NY 3 through Hannibal and Granby | About 25 minutes |
| Fulton to I-81 | NY 3 through Volney and Palermo, then NY 104 from Mexico | About 30 minutes |
| I-81 to US 11 | Pulaski, Sandy Creek, Adams, Watertown, I-781 | About 45 minutes |
| US 11 to Malone | Gouverneur, Canton, Potsdam, Brushton | About an hour and 40 minutes |
| Malone to the cabin | County Route 25 and town roads | About 20 minutes |
A stretch at Chimney Bluffs
On a daylight drive in the warm months, a good leg-stretch on the lake road is Chimney Bluffs State Park, on the Lake Ontario shore north of NY 104 in the Town of Huron, with a Wolcott address. Its earthen spires stand above the water, with trails along the shore and over the top of the bluffs, picnic areas and restrooms. The park is open all year from dawn to dusk, and from April 1 to October 31 the state charges $5 a vehicle. Pets are allowed in the day-use areas, two at most, on a leash no longer than six feet. The detour adds about 20 minutes of driving to the trip, plus whatever time you spend on the bluffs, so it suits a morning start and not a Friday after work.
I-81 and US 11
From the NY 104 interchange it is about 45 minutes up I-81, past Pulaski, Sandy Creek and Adams, to the exit for I-781 and Fort Drum just north of Watertown. The exits on this part of I-81 are being renumbered by mile, and the Fort Drum exit that older directions call 48A becomes 162 on the new signs. I-781 ends at US 11, and from there the road runs east through Evans Mills, Gouverneur, Canton and Potsdam to Malone. The drive from Syracuse lists the 24-hour stops near the I-81 exits, and the drive from Watertown takes US 11 a town at a time.
Watertown is also where you can trade US 11 for NY 3, which crosses the western Adirondacks through Carthage, Star Lake and Cranberry Lake to Tupper Lake before NY 30 runs north past Meacham Lake. It adds about an hour, so from Rochester it only makes sense on a long summer day with an early start; the Syracuse page describes the road.
Taking the Thruway instead
The Thruway way starts on I-490 east from downtown to the Thruway at Victor and follows I-90 east across Ontario, Seneca and Cayuga counties to exit 36, signed for I-81, where you turn north. It takes about as long as the lake road and is about 20 miles longer, and it has two eastbound service areas before exit 36, both open 24 hours:
- Clifton Springs, with a Shake Shack, a Chick-fil-A, an Auntie Anne's, a Starbucks, Sunoco fuel and six EV chargers.
- Port Byron, with a Burger King, a Dunkin' and Mobil fuel.
The Thruway has no toll booths. Cameras read your E-ZPass or photograph your plate, and Tolls by Mail bills come in the mail 30 to 45 days after the trip. A New York E-ZPass gets the lowest rate, and the rates go up again on January 1, 2027, so if you drive a rental, ask how the company passes on tolls.
One change is coming at exit 36. The Federal Highway Administration signed off in September 2026 on renaming the old I-81 through Syracuse, between its two interchanges with I-481, as Business Loop 81, with the I-81 name moving to the eastern bypass. The stretch north from exit 36 to Cicero is part of that business loop. The state told drivers not to expect new signs right away, and either way the road north from exit 36 joins I-81 in Cicero.
Snow on the lake road
The lake road crosses Oswego County, and Fulton and Palermo turn up again and again in the National Weather Service's write-ups of lake-effect storms. From the Buffalo office's archive:
- February 14, 2025. Snow fell at two to four inches an hour and dropped nearly two feet on Palermo and Fulton during the day, which made travel nearly impossible across the southern half of Oswego County.
- January 14, 2025. Lake snow brought numerous accidents on NY 104 east of Oswego, the road Rochester drivers use if they go through Oswego instead of Fulton.
- December 11 to 12, 2025. Several bands of light to moderate snow lined up from eastern Wayne County east across Oswego County, right along the lake road, from December 11 into the early hours of December 12.
- March 16 to 18, 2026. A late-season storm still left 13.4 inches at Fulton and 13.6 two miles south-south-east of Palermo.
When the bands line up along the lake road like that, take the Thruway: it stays south of them until Syracuse, and I-81 still crosses Oswego County, but as an interstate instead of the two-lane road through Wayne County. It is not immune: on the Friday after Thanksgiving 2025 a heavy band sat over the Thruway east of Geneva, putting down one to two inches of snow an hour and leaving snow-covered roads all the way to the Syracuse area. Read the Buffalo office's forecast for Wayne and Oswego counties and look at 511NY before you pick. If a warning covers I-81 as well for your whole travel window, the all-interstate way around is the Thruway east to Albany and the Northway north, which adds about two and a half hours from Rochester. Winter driving covers tires and what to carry, and the Watertown page covers the Tug Hill end of I-81.
Fall color and summer evenings
The color comes earlier at the cabins than on the lake shore. In the I LOVE NY foliage report for October 7 to 13, 2026, the observer in Greece, outside Rochester, counted a little more than 30 percent change, while Saranac Lake, about 43 road miles from the cabins, was at 95 percent and peak and Malone was near peak. The Signature Tasting Weekend in Wayne County falls on Columbus Day weekend in 2026, Monday, October 12, so a fall trip can pick up apples on the way out and color at the other end. Timing the color is covered in fall foliage in the northern Adirondacks.
Summer is the easy season for this drive. Sunset at the cabins on Friday, June 11, 2027, comes at 8:42 p.m., with twilight until 9:19, so a mid-afternoon start from Rochester arrives in daylight.
Without a car
Amtrak's Empire Service connects Rochester with the Adirondack line, but only on the earliest train. On Amtrak's October 2026 timetable, train 280 pulls out of the Louise M. Slaughter Station at 5:31 a.m., daily, and is due at Albany-Rensselaer at 10:05. That leaves an hour and 40 minutes to make the northbound Adirondack, due out at 11:45 and into Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m., where the airport's Avis, Budget and Enterprise counters cover the last 61 road miles. Later trains from Rochester miss the Adirondack. Amtrak adjusts these times through the year, so check the timetable for your date before you build a trip on them.
For the trip home, the change is at Schenectady, not Albany. The Adirondack is due in Schenectady at 6:38 p.m., and the Lake Shore Limited pulls out of there at 7:33, reaching Rochester at 11:29 p.m. At Albany-Rensselaer the Adirondack does not arrive until 7:40, 35 minutes after that same train has gone, and nothing else heads west that night. Flying does not help either: none of the small airports near the cabins has a flight from Rochester, and the closest one with airline service, Lake Clear, is served by Cape Air from Boston and New York's JFK. Airports near the cabins compares the options for friends coming from elsewhere.
A Friday from Rochester
With four and a half hours of road, a start after 5 p.m. leaves no slack before quiet hours begin at 10 p.m. at The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home, and check-in opens at 4, so the plan below leaves at 2:30:
- 2:30 p.m. NY 104 east from downtown.
- About 3:45. Fulton. Gas and coffee at the Byrne Dairy on West Broadway.
- About 4:20. Onto I-81 east of Mexico.
- About 5:05. The Fort Drum exit and I-781 to US 11.
- About 6:45. Malone. Shop at the Price Chopper on Finney Boulevard, which stays open until 11 p.m., and text the host when to expect you.
- About 7:30. At the cabin.
On Friday, October 9, 2026, the start of the Apple Tasting Tour's signature weekend, the sun sets at the cabins at 6:23 p.m. and twilight is over by 6:52, so the last stretch of that plan is in the dark. If you can only leave after work, take the Thruway in the dark and shop in Rochester before you go, so the only stop is for gas.
Going home on Sunday
You have to be out by 11 a.m., which gets you home to Rochester in the late afternoon. The return is a good time to use the other road. If you came by the lake, going home by I-81 to Syracuse and the Thruway west gives you three westbound service areas before the Victor exit, all open 24 hours: Warners, with a Chick-fil-A, a Burger King and a Starbucks; Junius Ponds, with a Shake Shack and a Starbucks; and Seneca, with a Popeyes and a Dunkin'. Lunch in Canton or Potsdam on US 11 is the other option; where to eat covers Malone if you want breakfast before you leave.
A lake-effect band can organize over Oswego County within a few hours, so look at the forecast for Oswego and Wayne counties before you pack the car, and choose between NY 104 and the Thruway then, not at Mexico.
What Rochester guests come for
Six reviews so far come from guests who list Rochester as home, and three more from Henrietta, Batavia and Leicester. Most of those stays were in summer or in February. Two Rochester guests stayed at The Modern Tiny Home in February 2025, and one of them summed it up:
It was a great peaceful time, the view was amazing, and the hot tub was even better!
A Rochester guest at The Modern Pine in July 2022 found the hot tub "so nice when the temperature dropped in the evenings," and a Henrietta guest at the same cabin in July 2024 came for "complete serenity!" A Rochester party at The Aviator in June 2026 came to hike, planning "an exhausting day of hiking" with the cabin to come back to; hiking near Malone and the fire tower challenge have the trails.
Save the host's directions before you set out, because the end of the drive is on town roads where phone maps can send you different ways; getting to the cabins has the details. Then pick your cabin on the cabins page: all three sleep four and have private hot tubs.
Questions
How long is the drive from Rochester to the cabins?
250 road miles, about four and a half hours. The main way is NY 104 east through Webster and Wayne County, NY 3 through Fulton to Mexico, NY 104 east to I-81, I-81 north past Pulaski and Watertown to the Fort Drum exit, then I-781 and US 11 through Canton and Potsdam to Malone. Add half an hour for a gas stop and groceries.
Is the Thruway faster than NY 104 from Rochester?
It takes about the same time. The Thruway way, I-490 to the Thruway at Victor, east to exit 36 and north on I-81, is about 20 miles longer and tolled, but all interstate, with 24-hour service areas at Clifton Springs and Port Byron. NY 104 is shorter and has no Thruway tolls. Pick the Thruway when lake-effect bands are lined up along NY 104 and NY 3 from Wayne County into Oswego County.
Where do we stop for gas on the NY 104 route?
In Fulton, about an hour and a quarter from downtown Rochester. Byrne Dairy & Deli has two shops on Route 3 there, at 798 West Broadway and 1013 Emery Street, both listed as open 24 hours with gas, a deli and ice cream. After that, the stops near the I-81 exits are on the Syracuse page.
Does lake-effect snow affect the drive from Rochester?
Yes, mostly in Oswego County. In February 2025 nearly two feet fell on Fulton and Palermo in one day, and travel became nearly impossible across the southern half of the county. Check the National Weather Service forecast for Wayne and Oswego counties and 511NY before you leave, and take the Thruway if the bands are on the lake road. Winter driving has the kit.
Is there a good place to stretch our legs between Rochester and the cabins?
On a daylight drive, Chimney Bluffs State Park on Lake Ontario, near Wolcott, adds about 20 minutes of driving. It is open all year from dawn to dusk, with trails along the shore and above the bluffs, picnic areas and restrooms, and a $5 vehicle fee from April through October. Leashed pets, two at most, are allowed in the day-use areas.
Can we take the train from Rochester?
Only on the first train of the day. Amtrak's 5:31 a.m. Empire Service train reaches Albany-Rensselaer at 10:05 a.m., in time for the 11:45 a.m. Adirondack to Plattsburgh, which arrives at 4:02 p.m.; rent a car there for the last 61 road miles. Coming back, change at Schenectady: the Adirondack is due there at 6:38 p.m., and the Lake Shore Limited leaves at 7:33, due in Rochester at 11:29 p.m.
What time should we leave Rochester on a Friday?
By about 2:30 p.m. That puts you in Malone around 6:45 to shop and at the cabin around 7:30. Check-in is after 4 p.m., and The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home keep quiet hours from 10 p.m., so a start after 5 p.m. leaves no slack. In summer a mid-afternoon start still arrives in daylight.
