From Utica to the cabins
About 185 road miles, about three and a half to four hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.
From Utica the cabins are 185 road miles away, about three and a half hours by car: NY 12 north through Boonville to Lowville, NY 812 north through Croghan to Gouverneur, then US 11 east through Canton and Potsdam to Malone and County Route 25 south. The first hour runs along the edge of the Tug Hill, where Boonville averages about 164 inches of snow a year, so winter trips need a look at the forecast. In summer and early fall there is a second way, NY 28 and NY 30 through Old Forge, Blue Mountain Lake and Tupper Lake, the middle of the Adirondack Park.
The route from Utica
The drive comes in three parts: north up NY 12 to Lowville, a quiet hour on NY 812 to Gouverneur, and US 11 across St. Lawrence County to Malone. Each time in the table assumes a clear road and no stops.
| Stretch | Roads | On the way | About |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utica to Boonville | NY 8 and NY 12 north, then NY 12 | Deerfield, Trenton, Remsen, Alder Creek | 40 minutes |
| Boonville to Lowville | NY 12 | Port Leyden, Lyons Falls, Glenfield | 25 minutes |
| Lowville to Gouverneur | NY 812, a few miles shared with NY 3, then NY 58 and NY 812 | New Bremen, Croghan, Harrisville, Pitcairn, Fowler, Hailesboro | 50 minutes |
| Gouverneur to Potsdam | US 11 | De Kalb, Canton | 40 minutes |
| Potsdam to Malone | US 11 east | The towns of Stockholm and Lawrence, then Moira, the village of Brushton and Bangor | 40 minutes |
| The last stretch | Duane Street south, which becomes County Route 25 | Into the Town of Bellmont | 20 minutes |
By the time you reach US 11 at Gouverneur, more than half the distance is behind you. Potsdam is about 48 road miles from the cabins, Brushton 21 and Malone village about 10. Follow the host's directions for the last miles; getting to the cabins covers them.
NY 12 to Boonville
From downtown, the North-South Arterial carries NY 8 and NY 12 north out of the city, and NY 12 climbs out of the Mohawk Valley through Deerfield and Trenton. Utica sits at about 450 feet above sea level; by Remsen the road is at about 1,250. At Alder Creek, NY 28 branches off toward Old Forge, the start of the park route described below. Stay on NY 12 for Boonville.
Boonville, about 40 minutes out, is where the snow numbers start. The weather station four miles south-southwest of the village averages about 164 inches a year, against about 95 in Malone. For fuel, the Stewart's at 601 Main Street has gas, diesel and non-ethanol 91 premium, plus an ATM, restrooms and coffee, and the village has a Tops supermarket on Utica Boulevard. Boonville is in Oneida County, so its forecast comes from the National Weather Service office in Binghamton.
NY 12 to Lowville
North of Boonville, NY 12 crosses into Lewis County and runs through Port Leyden, Lyons Falls and Glenfield to Lowville, dropping from about 1,100 feet to about 800. The higher ground to the west is the Tug Hill Plateau, where the Highmarket weather station sits at about 1,800 feet. Part of the plateau, in the towns of Lowville and Martinsburg among others, carries the Maple Ridge wind farm, which can generate 322 megawatts.
Lowville, about an hour from Utica, has the last big stores before Gouverneur. The Walmart Supercenter at 7155 State Route 12 is right on the route as you come into town, Tops has a supermarket in the Lowville Plaza, and the Stewart's at 7491 South State Street has diesel and 91 premium without ethanol as well as regular, plus an ATM and restrooms. Fill the tank here: the next hour has two Stewart's shops on the road, in Croghan and at Harrisville, and neither lists diesel.
NY 812 to Gouverneur
At Lowville, NY 812 turns north. It runs through the Town of New Bremen to the village of Croghan, where a Stewart's and a Dollar General stand on the highway, then through the Town of Diana, sharing a few miles with NY 3 at Harrisville. The Harrisville Stewart's, at 81 State Highway 3, has gas, non-ethanol 91 premium, an ATM and restrooms; with no diesel listed there or in Croghan, diesel drivers should fill up in Lowville. At the east edge of Harrisville the road crosses into St. Lawrence County, and NY 812 turns north again through the towns of Pitcairn and Fowler, past Hailesboro, to Gouverneur.
The road rolls between about 750 and 1,100 feet for most of this hour, then drops to about 440 feet at Gouverneur. At Gouverneur the route meets US 11 on East Main Street, and the Price Chopper at 389 East Main Street is right on the route; its listed hours run from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. every day, and it sells beer.
US 11 to Malone
From Gouverneur, US 11 runs north-east through De Kalb, Canton and Potsdam and then east to Malone. This last part of the drive is the same road the drive from Watertown follows, and that page has the stops in Canton, Potsdam and Brushton, from the falls park on the Grasse River to the Stewart's in Potsdam that stays open around the clock.
East of Potsdam the road reaches the lowest point of the whole trip, about 325 feet, and then starts back up: Malone sits at about 800 feet, and the last ten miles to the cabins climb to about 1,300. Malone's supermarkets are on or near US 11, so shop before you turn south on Duane Street; groceries and supplies lists them and what the cabin kitchens already hold.
Stops on the way
- Boonville. Stewart's at 601 Main Street for gas, diesel and coffee, and the Tops supermarket on Utica Boulevard.
- Lowville. The Walmart Supercenter on NY 12, Tops, and Stewart's at 7491 South State Street with gas and diesel. The last diesel for an hour.
- Croghan and Harrisville. A Stewart's in each, with gas but no diesel listed.
- Gouverneur. Price Chopper on East Main Street, with posted hours of six in the morning to eleven at night.
- Canton, Potsdam and Brushton. See the Watertown page for the stops on US 11.
- Malone. The supermarkets, before the turn onto Duane Street.
Snow on the Tug Hill
Lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario falls hardest on the Tug Hill Plateau, and the first hour of this drive runs along its eastern side. The 1991 to 2020 averages show how much the snow piles up: about 164 inches a year at Boonville, about 127 at Lowville and about 203 at Highmarket, up on the plateau west of NY 12, against about 95 at Malone. The National Weather Service office in Buffalo writes up each lake-effect storm, and the last winter had several that hit this road:
- November 26 to 29, 2025. The first major lake-effect storm of the season left a half to one foot on the Tug Hill; Lowville measured 8.6 inches.
- December 29, 2025, to January 3, 2026. About 120 hours of lake snow brought more than four feet to parts of south-west Lewis County, 31 inches at Highmarket and 14 inches at Lowville.
- January 21 to 24, 2026. Lowville measured 23.5 inches, the largest total off Lake Ontario in that storm and a rare one for a village in the lee of the plateau, and the heaviest part of the band dropped 2 to 3 inches an hour.
Three Weather Service offices split this route: Binghamton forecasts for Oneida County, Buffalo for Lewis County and Burlington, Vermont, for St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, so read all three before a winter drive. If a lake-effect warning covers Lewis County for your whole travel window, the long way round is the Thruway east to Albany and the Northway north, which adds about an hour and a half; the drive from Albany covers it. For tires, plows and what to carry, see winter driving.
The park route on NY 28 and NY 30
The other way north turns off NY 12 at Alder Creek onto NY 28 and runs through the middle of the Adirondack Park. It crosses the Town of Forestport past White Lake and Otter Lake, enters the Town of Webb at Thendara and Old Forge, runs on through Eagle Bay and Inlet, and goes past Raquette Lake to Blue Mountain Lake, where the route turns north on NY 30. From there NY 30 runs north through Long Lake to Tupper Lake, east a short way with NY 3, then north to Paul Smiths, and on past Meacham Lake to the county roads near the cabins.
On a clear road, routing services put it only about ten minutes slower than the main route, though it is about eight miles shorter. Gas is easy to find as far as Tupper Lake, but after that the hamlets are far apart, and the last 45 miles or so to the cabins have no gas station at all. Allow about four hours. The road climbs from about 1,200 feet at Alder Creek to about 1,700 at Old Forge, reaches about 2,000 feet between Old Forge and Eagle Bay and its highest point, about 2,200 feet, just north of Blue Mountain Lake, and stays above about 1,450 feet until the last few miles to the cabins.
Stops on the park route
- Old Forge. A supermarket on NY 28, the last one until Tupper Lake, and gas in Thendara and Old Forge.
- Blue Mountain Lake. The Adirondack Experience, a museum, at 9097 State Route 30, open every day from 10 to 5 between May 22 and October 12 in 2026; adult admission at the door was $24.
- Long Lake. Stewart's at 8589 Newcomb Road, a short detour on NY 28N, with gas, diesel and restrooms.
- Tupper Lake. Stewart's at 124 Park Street, with gas and diesel, and two supermarkets. Fill the tank here. The Wild Center is in Tupper Lake as well; see the Wild Center guide.
- Paul Smiths. Paul Smith's College runs its Visitor Interpretive Center right beside NY 30, and its trail network, over 25 miles of it, can be walked every day between dawn and dusk; see the Saranac Lake and Paul Smiths guide.
This is not a way round the snow. Old Forge averages about 158 inches a year, nearly as much as Boonville, so save this route for daylight from late spring to mid-October. The Albany weather office covers Old Forge and Hamilton County, and Burlington takes over at Tupper Lake.
Fall and the holiday weekends
The two routes turn color at different times. In the week of October 7 to 13, 2026, the state's foliage observers put Utica at more than 45 percent change with muted to average colors, Glenfield on NY 12 at 75 percent and near peak, and Potsdam at 75 percent and near peak. On the park route, Old Forge was at peak or just past it, at 85 to 90 percent, Long Lake was just past peak and Tupper Lake was at 90 to 95 percent. The Columbus Day holiday is October 12 in 2026 and October 11 in 2027, and the Adirondack Experience closes for the season on October 12, 2026. From October through December, keep an eye out for deer, which are most often hit at dawn and dusk; the fall foliage guide has the color timing near the cabins.
Without a car
Amtrak can get you to Plattsburgh from Utica's station at 321 Main Street, which marked its 100th anniversary in 2014, but it takes all day. On the timetables Amtrak published in October 2026, Empire Service train 280 leaves Utica at 7:58 a.m. and gets to Albany-Rensselaer at 10:05 a.m., where the northbound Adirondack departs at 11:45 a.m. for Plattsburgh, due at 4:02 p.m. That is about eight hours to Plattsburgh, still 61 road miles short of the cabins, so you need a rental car there; airports near the cabins lists the counters at the Plattsburgh airport.
The trip home can be done in one day if both trains keep time. Take the afternoon Adirondack from Plattsburgh, which leaves at 2:45, get off at Schenectady, where it is due at 6:38, and catch the Chicago-bound Lake Shore Limited there at 7:33; it reaches Utica at 8:50 p.m. That leaves 55 minutes to change trains, so check how the Adirondack is running before you count on it. The nearest big airports to Utica are Syracuse and Albany.
A Friday after work from Utica
The cabins open for arrivals after 4 p.m., and two of them, The Modern Tiny Home and The Aviator, set quiet hours that start at 10 at night and run until 8. Here is how a 5 o'clock start from Utica plays out:
- 5:00 p.m. North on NY 12.
- About 5:40. Boonville. Coffee at Stewart's if you need it.
- About 6:05. Lowville. Fill the tank.
- About 6:55. Gouverneur and US 11.
- About 7:35. Potsdam.
- About 8:15. Malone. Groceries, then let the host know when you will arrive.
- About 8:55. At the cabin, with an hour to settle in before quiet hours.
The season decides how much of that is in daylight. On Friday, August 27, 2027, the sun sets at the cabins at 7:43 p.m., so the light lasts to about Potsdam. On October 9, 2026, it sets at 6:23 p.m., and NY 812 is a drive at dusk. On December 11, 2026, sunset is at 4:16 p.m., and the whole drive is in the dark; on March 12, 2027, it is at 5:59 p.m., so you lose the light around Lowville. On a winter Friday, fill up in Lowville before the dark hour on NY 812. A guest from Indian Lake noted after an August 2021 stay, "Just a heads up, cell signal in area was weak," so send that message from Malone.
What Utica-area guests come for
In January 2024 a guest from Mohawk, in Herkimer County, wrote this after a winter stay at The Modern Pine:
Quiet secluded spot in the north country. Great spot to recharge the batteries for a few days.
A Utica guest at The Modern Pine in September 2026 began, "The cabin is absolutely perfect," and pointed out how close the snowmobile and ATV trails are; snowmobile and ATV cabins covers the trails and the rules, and snowmobiling the C7 the main corridor. A guest from Durhamville, in Oneida County, summed up an August 2025 stay at the same cabin: "This was a beautiful relaxing place." All three cabins sleep four, each with a private hot tub and fire pit, and they are best for couples, friends and families whose children are 10 or older.
The way home to Utica
Checkout is before 11 a.m., which puts you back in Utica by mid-afternoon on the main route. From late May to mid-October, going home through the park makes a different day: NY 30 south to Tupper Lake for The Wild Center, Blue Mountain Lake for the Adirondack Experience, and NY 28 through Old Forge back to Alder Creek. In winter, check the Buffalo office's forecast for Lewis County before you leave the cabin, since a lake-effect band over the Tug Hill would meet you on the last hour home.
Questions
How long is the drive from Utica to the cabins?
185 road miles and about three and a half hours on a clear road: NY 12 to Lowville, NY 812 to Gouverneur, US 11 east to Malone and County Route 25 south. Routing services put the park route on NY 28 and NY 30, through Old Forge and Tupper Lake, only about ten minutes slower, but allow about four hours for it.
What is the drive like in winter?
The first hour runs along the Tug Hill snow belt: Boonville averages about 164 inches of snow a year and Lowville about 127. Read the Binghamton, Buffalo and Burlington weather offices' forecasts before you leave. If a lake-effect warning covers Lewis County all day, the Thruway and the Northway add about an hour and a half; see winter driving.
Where should we stop for gas on the way from Utica?
Boonville or Lowville, where the Stewart's shops sell gas, diesel and non-ethanol premium. The hour on NY 812 has two Stewart's shops on the road, in Croghan and at Harrisville, and neither lists diesel. In Gouverneur the Price Chopper on East Main Street is listed as open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Malone has the supermarkets.
Is the route through Old Forge worth taking?
In daylight from late May to mid-October, yes, as a slower drive through the middle of the park, with the Adirondack Experience at Blue Mountain Lake and The Wild Center in Tupper Lake. Old Forge has the last supermarket until Tupper Lake, and Tupper Lake is the place to fill the tank: the last 45 miles or so have no gas station. In winter skip it: Old Forge averages about 158 inches of snow.
Can we get to the cabins from Utica by train?
Only with a long day and a rental car. Empire Service train 280 leaves Utica at 7:58 a.m. for Albany-Rensselaer, where the Adirondack leaves at 11:45 a.m. and reaches Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m.; Plattsburgh is 61 road miles from the cabins. Coming home, a 55-minute connection at Schenectady gets you back to Utica at 8:50 p.m.
What time should we leave Utica on a Friday?
Check-in is after 4 p.m. A 5 p.m. start puts you in Lowville around 6, Malone around 8:15 and at the cabin around 8:55 with a grocery stop, before the 10 p.m. quiet hours at The Aviator and The Modern Tiny Home. From November to February most of that drive is in the dark.
