Airports near the Cabins

Airports near the cabins south of Malone in 2026: Lake Clear, Plattsburgh, Montréal, Burlington, Ottawa and more, with airlines, rental cars and the drive.

No airport is close to the cabins, and the right one depends on where you start. The nearest airline service is Cape Air at Lake Clear, about 40 road miles south; the big international airport is Montréal–Trudeau, 83 to 103 road miles north with a border crossing on the way; and private pilots can land at Malone-Dufort, 11.6 road miles from the door. Here is each airport in 2026, with the airlines, the rental counters, the drive, the border question and the kind of trip it suits.

The airports at a glance

Road miles run from each terminal to the cabins on OpenStreetMap's road network. Airline schedules change with the seasons, so check the airline's own timetable for your dates before you book anything else.

Which airport fits your trip

  • From Boston. Cape Air flies to Lake Clear (the airport's posted schedule, dated June 2024, shows two flights a day; check Cape Air for the current one), about 40 road miles from the cabins, and Boutique Air flies to Massena, about 50. Both use small planes with eight or nine seats.
  • From New York City. Cape Air's daily JFK flight to Lake Clear lands closest to the cabins. Burlington, 116 road miles away, has flights from JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, and the other choices are the 337-mile drive or Amtrak to Plattsburgh.
  • From Florida and the Southeast. Allegiant flies to Plattsburgh from Fort Lauderdale, Orlando Sanford and Sarasota-Bradenton, with more cities in season, and from October 2026 Breeze connects Ogdensburg with Orlando, Tampa and Fort Myers by way of Raleigh-Durham.
  • From Washington and connecting cities. Contour flies from Washington Dulles to Plattsburgh, with connecting tickets on American and United.
  • From Europe, overseas and most of Canada. Montréal–Trudeau, then a land crossing into New York. Ottawa suits eastern Ontario.
  • For the widest choice without a border. Burlington, Vermont, and Albany.
  • In your own plane. Malone-Dufort, twenty minutes from the cabins by road.

Adirondack Regional at Lake Clear (SLK)

The airport is at Lake Clear, 10 to 15 minutes from downtown Saranac Lake, and it is the closest airport with airline flights, about 40 road miles from the cabins. Cape Air flies it under the federal Essential Air Service program, and its contract, renewed in early 2026, runs through February 29, 2028. It provides 14 round trips a week to Boston Logan and seven to New York's JFK, which works out to two Boston flights and one JFK flight a day, on nine-seat Cessna 402 and Tecnam P2012 Traveller planes. In early 2026 the average fare was $118 to Boston and $169 to JFK. The flights run all year.

Cape Air's ticket counter in the terminal is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Parking is free for the length of your trip. In October 2026 the terminal cafe was closed while the airport builds a new space, so eat before you fly.

Rental cars are the weak point. Adirondack Rental Cars has the only rental desk on the airport, reached at (833) RENT-SLK; Turo hosts keep cars at the airport; and Avis, based off the airport, may deliver a car for an extra fee. The airport lists Polar Express, Northern Lights Taxi and Olympic Taxi for rides, and Uber and Lyft have few drivers in the region. Reserve the car before you book the flight.

The drive is the simplest of any airport on this page. NY 186 runs west from the terminal road to NY 30, and NY 30 heads north through Paul Smiths and past Meacham Lake to the county roads, about 40 road miles and 50 minutes to an hour in all. Saranac Lake's supermarket lies the other way, so either detour into the village first or shop in Malone after you arrive; the Saranac Lake guide covers the village. For pilots, the airport's FBO is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. from May to October and to 8 p.m. from November to April.

Bags and skis on Cape Air

The planes are small, and Cape Air's contract of carriage warns that aircraft size may limit how much baggage fits on any flight. It allows one checked or gate-checked bag of up to 50 pounds and 45 linear inches at no extra charge, and up to two more bags of up to 50 pounds and 62 linear inches each for a fee, as space permits. A bag of 51 to 70 pounds is marked heavy and loaded last, if there is room, and bags that do not fit fly on the next flight with space. Skiers headed for Titus Mountain should check which plane flies their route: up to two pairs of skis in one bag plus a boot bag count as one special item, with a maximum length of 70 inches on the Cessna 402 and 42 inches on the Tecnam Traveller.

Plattsburgh International (PBG)

Plattsburgh's airport is about three miles south of the city's business district and about 64 road miles from the cabins. Allegiant flies to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando Sanford and Sarasota-Bradenton, with seasonal flights to St. Pete-Clearwater, Punta Gorda for Fort Myers, and Myrtle Beach. Contour Airlines flies nonstop to Washington Dulles on 30-seat jets, with connecting tickets on American and United, under a federal Essential Air Service agreement that runs through September 2027.

Breeze Airways paused its Plattsburgh flights at the end of April 2025, calling it a seasonal hiatus and saying it hoped to return in 2026. In October 2026 the airport's flight page still carried a Breeze booking link but listed no Breeze destinations, so plan on Allegiant or Contour here. When Breeze paused, Canadians made up roughly half of Plattsburgh's air travelers.

Avis, Budget and Enterprise have counters in the terminal. Avis's counter sits across from baggage claim and is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, so book ahead if you land late. Turo, Uber and Lyft serve the airport too. Parking is free for the first hour and $10 a day after that, payable in U.S. or Canadian money.

From the terminal, city streets lead north to NY 3, which runs west for about two miles to NY 190, the Military Turnpike, and NY 190 runs west to US 11. US 11 continues west through Chateaugay to Malone, and County Route 25 takes you south to the cabins; allow an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. The drive from Plattsburgh has the stops, and the Plattsburgh guide covers the city if you want a few hours there on the way.

Montréal–Trudeau (YUL)

Montréal–Trudeau is the big one: 22.4 million passengers passed through it in 2025, more than four times Ottawa's total, and it has year-round nonstop flights to nearly 150 destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. That makes it the usual way in from overseas. It sits in Dorval, about 12 miles from downtown Montreal, and the road miles to the cabins depend on the border crossing you use.

The rental counters

The rental counters are in the P4 parking garage. From the arrivals level, go out through Door 28 to the free shuttle, which runs to P4. Avis lists its counter as open from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Enterprise until 11:59 p.m., so a very late landing needs a plan.

The drive

  • Through Fort Covington, open 24 hours. Autoroutes 40, 30 and 530 to Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Route 132 west to Dundee, then NY 37 to Malone: about 92 road miles.
  • Through Chateaugay, open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The same autoroutes to Route 132, then Route 202 and Montée Herdman to the crossing, Chateaugay village and US 11 west: about 83 road miles.
  • Through Champlain, open 24 hours. The Mercier Bridge, then Autoroutes 30 and 15 south to the crossing at Lacolle and Champlain, then US 11 west: about 103 road miles.

Allow about two hours plus the wait at the border. Trout River, the crossing on NY 30, is closed to traffic entering the United States until about May 2028, so ignore any route that sends you that way southbound. Crossing the border has every port's hours and the rules on food, firewood and dogs.

Driving out of Montreal

Two Quebec rules matter on the way out of the airport. Turning right on a red light is allowed everywhere in Québec except on the island of Montréal, where the airport is, and wherever a sign forbids it. And from the airport, the Fort Covington and Chateaugay routes take Autoroute 30 through the Soulanges Tunnel and over the Serge-Marcil Bridge to Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, the tolled stretch called A30 Express. A regular car pays $4.40 a crossing, the same in either direction, on the rate schedule that runs through January 31, 2027, and the booths take credit cards, debit cards and transponders but no cash. The Champlain route does not pass the toll, and neither do routes from downtown Montreal, which reach Autoroute 30 by the Mercier Bridge.

Border papers for a Montreal arrival

Flying in through Montreal means two border checks. To fly to Canada, U.S. citizens should carry a passport book, because the passport card is not valid for international travel by air. Most other visa-exempt visitors need an eTA, which costs CAD $7 and is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires; U.S. citizens are exempt, and travelers who arrive in Canada by car, bus, train or boat do not need one. Then, at the land crossing into New York, U.S. and Canadian citizens show a passport, an enhanced driver's license or a NEXUS card, and visitors from Visa Waiver Program countries need an approved ESTA, required at land crossings since October 1, 2022. Fees rose on September 30, 2025: an ESTA now costs $40, and applying for an I-94 at a land border costs $30, so check the CBP rules for your passport before you go.

The car and the season

Most cars rented from Enterprise in Canada can be driven into the United States, but the company asks renters to confirm with the renting location; ask the same of any company before you book. Every car registered in Quebec, rentals included, must be fitted for winter from December 1 to March 15, so a Montreal rental comes ready for snow in those months. On the way home, flights from Montréal–Trudeau to the United States clear U.S. customs before boarding under the CBP preclearance program, so you skip the customs line when you land. The Montreal day trip page has ideas if you fly in early and want an afternoon in the city.

Burlington, Vermont (BTV)

Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport has more airlines than any U.S. airport closer to the cabins, and no border on the drive. In 2026 American flies to Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington National, with Denver in season; Breeze flies to Baltimore, Fort Myers, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham and Tampa, with Charleston in season and a through flight to Vero Beach; Delta flies to Atlanta, New York JFK and LaGuardia, with Minneapolis in season; Sun Country flies to Minneapolis in season; and United flies to Chicago O'Hare, Newark and Washington Dulles, with Denver and Houston in season.

Seven rental companies list locations at the airport: Avis, Budget, Enterprise, National, Alamo, Hertz and Dollar. Avis's counter is in the baggage claim area, with its cars parked just outside, and it is open from 7 a.m. to 12:15 a.m.

Around the top of the lake it is about 116 road miles to the cabins: I-89 north to Swanton, VT 78 to Alburgh, US 2 across the Rouses Point Bridge, then US 11 west through Champlain and Chateaugay, about two and a half hours. The Grand Isle to Plattsburgh ferry, which runs around the clock all year, cuts the trip to about 94 road miles, with a crossing of about 15 minutes. The drive from Burlington has both routes.

Ottawa (YOW)

Ottawa's airport handled 4.9 million passengers in 2025, about 0.7 million of them on flights to and from the United States. It suits travelers from eastern Ontario and anyone connecting from elsewhere in Canada.

Eight rental companies serve the airport. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty have counters on level 1 of the P1 parkade, and Routes is the one based off the airport. Most of the counters open at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and close at 1 a.m., National keeps shorter hours, and the airport notes that hours shift with the flight schedule.

The drive is about 103 road miles: Highway 417 east and Highway 138 south to Cornwall, the Seaway International Bridge into Massena, open 24 hours with a toll payable in Canadian or U.S. money, then NY 37 east to Fort Covington and Malone. Allow about two and a quarter hours plus the border. The other way, by Highway 416 and the Ogdensburg–Prescott bridge, is about 131 road miles. The border papers are the same as for Montréal–Trudeau, and Ottawa has U.S. preclearance too for the flight home. The drive from Ottawa has more.

Ogdensburg (OGS)

Breeze Airways flies Ogdensburg under the federal Essential Air Service program, and by August 2026 it had signed a new three-year contract. From October 2026 all of its daily flights run by way of Raleigh-Durham and continue to Florida, to Orlando, Tampa or Fort Myers, with Florida passengers staying on board at the stop. The Washington Dulles flights end with the change. Breeze has also flown seasonal nonstops to Orlando, most recently from February to late April 2026. July 2026 was the airport's busiest month since Breeze arrived, with 7,000 travelers. Check Breeze's schedule for your dates.

The airport's rental car provider is Blevins Bros., a family-owned local company, which has the car waiting at the airport for lockbox pickup. Reservations are required, so book when you book the flight. From the airport, NY 68 runs southeast to Canton and US 11 continues east through Potsdam to Malone, about 76 road miles and an hour and a half or a little more.

Massena (MSS)

The Town of Massena owns this airport, two miles east of the village, and Boutique Air flies it to Boston Logan. The U.S. Department of Transportation chose Boutique for a term from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2028, with 21 round trips a week on eight- or nine-passenger Pilatus PC-12s. The airport averages more than 3,100 passenger boardings a year.

The town's airport page lists no rental car desk, so arrange a car before you fly. The drive is about 50 road miles: NY 420 south to US 11, then US 11 east to Malone and County Route 25 south, about an hour.

Albany (ALB)

Albany International is the big domestic choice without a border: Allegiant, American, Avelo, Breeze, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and United fly here. The rental counters, for Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, and National and Alamo, are in the baggage claim area, and the cars are in the airport's parking garage.

It is the farthest airport on this page, about 183 road miles from the cabins: the Northway north to exit 30, NY 73 through Keene, NY 86 through Saranac Lake and NY 30 north, about three and a half hours. The drive from Albany has the stops.

Malone-Dufort (MAL) for private pilots

Malone-Dufort Airport is two miles west of Malone village and 11.6 road miles from the cabins, the closest airport to them. The Town of Malone owns it, it was activated in November 1942, and it is unattended. Field elevation is 790 feet.

Runways and lights

Runway 5/23 is 3,994 by 100 feet of asphalt in excellent condition, with two-light PAPIs at both ends and medium-intensity runway lights. Runway 14/32 is 3,250 by 75 feet of asphalt, with a 348-foot displaced threshold on runway 32 that leaves 2,902 feet for landing that way. The runway lights, the taxiway lights and the PAPIs are pilot-controlled on the CTAF, 122.8, which is also the AWOS frequency; the AWOS can be dialed at (518) 651-2601. There are RNAV (GPS) approaches to runways 5 and 23, and Boston Center provides approach and departure service on 135.25.

Services and remarks

Self-serve 100LL is available, and there are tie-downs, but no airframe or powerplant service and no oxygen. Haying activity and equipment are on the field from June to September. Runway 14/32 gets snow removal in winter, but the town plows its roads before the airport, so a visual inspection and a NOTAM check are required. For a clearance, call Boston Center at 603-879-6859. The airport manager's number is (518) 483-4740. These details were current on October 1, 2026; check the current Chart Supplement and NOTAMs before you go.

No rental car or courtesy car is listed at the field, so arrange your ride before you fly. The drive is about 20 minutes: US 11 east into Malone, Duane Street south and County Route 25. One of the cabins, The Aviator, was built for aviation fans, with aircraft prints, a Municipal Airports poster and its own sign; the post on The Aviator tells its story.

When you need more runway or services

Adirondack Regional at Lake Clear, 40 road miles from the cabins, is the step up. Its runway 5/23 is 6,573 by 150 feet of grooved asphalt with high-intensity lights and an ILS to runway 23, and runway 9/27 adds 3,997 feet. The field sells 100LL and Jet A, offers major airframe and powerplant service, hangars and tie-downs, and is attended from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. from November to April and to 9 p.m. from May to October. Its CTAF is 123.0, and there is no tower.

Rental cars and winter

At the small airports, book the car when you book the flight: Lake Clear has one rental desk on the field, Plattsburgh's Avis counter closes at 7 p.m., and Massena's town page lists none. From December to March, ask for winter tires or all-wheel drive. Quebec's winter-tire rule covers cars registered in Quebec, rentals included, from December 1 to March 15, and it does not apply to cars registered anywhere else, so a car rented in New York or Vermont may arrive on all-season tires. Winter driving covers the rest of the winter kit, and getting to the cabins covers the last miles, the host's directions and where to shop on the way. Every airport on this page ends with the same drive in, on county roads, a short run of town roads and a private drive, and the listings call a car or SUV essential.

If you would rather drive the whole way, the drive-from pages give the road from 19 cities, and getting here puts the roads, the border, the airports and the train on one page.

Questions

What is the closest airport with airline flights?

Adirondack Regional Airport at Lake Clear, near Saranac Lake, about 40 road miles from the cabins. Cape Air flies there under a federal contract that runs through February 29, 2028, with two round trips a day to Boston Logan and one to New York's JFK on nine-seat planes. Reserve a rental car first: Adirondack Rental Cars has the only rental desk on the airport.

Is it better to fly into Montreal or Plattsburgh?

Montréal–Trudeau has far more flights, with nonstops to nearly 150 destinations, but the drive is 83 to 103 road miles with a border crossing and the papers that go with it. Plattsburgh is 64 road miles with no border, but its flights are limited to Allegiant's Florida and Myrtle Beach routes and Contour's flights to Washington Dulles. If Plattsburgh's schedule fits, it is the simpler trip.

Can we rent a car in Montreal and drive it to the cabins?

Usually. Most cars rented from Enterprise in Canada can be driven into the United States, and the company asks renters to confirm with the renting location; ask the same of any company. Cars registered in Quebec, rentals included, must have winter tires from December 1 to March 15. At the border, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a passport, an enhanced driver's license or a NEXUS card; see crossing the border.

Is there an airport for private planes near the cabins?

Yes. Malone-Dufort (MAL), two miles west of Malone village, is 11.6 road miles from the cabins. It is unattended, with a 3,994-foot main runway and a 3,250-foot second runway, pilot-controlled lights on 122.8, RNAV (GPS) approaches to runways 5 and 23, self-serve 100LL and tie-downs. No rental or courtesy car is listed, so arrange your ride before you fly.

Do Americans need a passport to fly into Montreal?

Plan on a passport book. The U.S. passport card is not valid for international travel by air, so it will not get you onto a flight to Canada. For the drive from Montreal into New York, a passport, a passport card, an enhanced driver's license or a NEXUS card works. Visitors from Visa Waiver Program countries also need an approved ESTA to enter by land, and an ESTA has cost $40 since September 30, 2025.

Which airport is best from Boston?

Cape Air flies from Boston Logan to Lake Clear 14 times a week, about 40 road miles from the cabins, and Boutique Air flies from Boston to Massena, about 50. Both use planes with eight or nine seats, so check the baggage limits, especially for skis. Driving from Boston is about 329 road miles; see the drive from Boston.

How do we get from the airport to the cabins?

By car. The listings call a car or SUV essential, and the last miles are county roads, town roads and a private drive. Book the rental when you book the flight: Lake Clear has one rental desk on the field, Plattsburgh's Avis counter closes at 7 p.m., and Massena's town page lists no rental desk. Getting to the cabins covers the drive and the host's directions.
