Plan Your Trip
The roads in, the border crossings that are open, the airports, winter driving, the bugs and when they bite, bringing the dog, what to pack and the events worth planning around.
Before you drive up
The cabins are on rural roads south of Malone, and a car or SUV is essential: there is no public transport to the property. Use the directions the host sends after booking for the last miles; guests have written that GPS took them a different way each time. From December to March come with snow tires or all-wheel drive, and check 511NY before a long drive; the winter driving guide has the rest.
From Canada, the Trout River crossing on NY 30 is closed to U.S.-bound traffic until about May 2028. Fort Covington and Champlain are open 24 hours and Chateaugay in daytime hours; the border guide has the hours, the documents and the rules for dogs. Saranac Lake's regional field, 45 minutes to an hour away, is the closest airport with scheduled flights (Cape Air, to Boston and New York); Plattsburgh is an hour and a quarter east, and Montréal–Trudeau is the biggest.
All three listings allow pets, and the dog guide covers the yards, the trails and the nearest help. Black flies arrive in mid-May and peak in late May and early June, which is when a screened room on the deck matters, and the events calendar has the dates worth planning a stay around.
