Groceries, Fuel and Supplies

Supermarkets, liquor stores, pharmacies, fuel, propane and hardware near the cabins, a 24-hour farm store in Owls Head, the kitchens and a first-night list.

Malone, about ten road miles north of the cabins, is where a stay gets stocked: three supermarkets, the pharmacies, two liquor stores, hardware, fuel and propane. Closer in, a self-checkout farm store in Owls Head, about four road miles from the cabins, stays open around the clock, and south of the cabins the next supermarkets are in Saranac Lake, about 43 road miles away. Below are the stores, what the three kitchens already have, and a first-night list built from what the listings leave out.

The supermarkets in Malone

Shop on the way in. Check-in at all three cabins is after 4 p.m., and two of the three supermarkets stay open until 11 p.m., so even a late Friday arrival can fill the fridge before the last ten miles. One guest summed up the trip in a review:

Price chopper, Walmart and liquor stores are within 15-20 mins of the cabin.

Price Chopper is the full supermarket, near the corner of Finney Boulevard and West Main Street. It has a bakery, a deli counter, meat and poultry, seafood, produce and an organic section, plus catering and a food court for a ready-made dinner. Its beer aisle carries New York breweries such as Ommegang, Brooklyn Brewery, Captain Lawrence, Saranac, Southern Tier and Sloop. It offers grocery pickup and delivery through Instacart, so one person can place the order from home and collect it on the drive in. It has no pharmacy.

ALDI is the discount grocer: meat and seafood, produce, ready-made deli items, baked goods and frozen food, with curbside pickup or delivery when you order online. Bring a quarter for the cart.

The Walmart Supercenter covers what a grocery store does not. Besides the grocery, bakery and deli, it has a pharmacy, hardware, kitchen supplies, a pet department, a garden center and an auto care center. Delivery to a rural address is not a sure thing with any of the three, so check that the app accepts your cabin's address before you plan around it.

Small stores with long hours

Cooks' Country Store is the farm store at The Cook Farm, 189 Ragged Lake Road in Owls Head, about four road miles from the cabins. It runs on a self-checkout kiosk, so it stays open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The shelves hold local meat, milk, cheese and butter, coffee, tea, maple syrup, honey, bread and pastries and drinks, plus everyday essentials, from about two dozen local businesses: beef and eggs from Harmony Hills Farmstead, milk from Hidden Acres Dairy and coffee from a Tug Hill roaster among them. The farm itself raises goats, pigs, turkeys, chickens and ducks and sells its own pasture-raised meat and produce. For a forgotten carton of milk or a dozen eggs, it is the short drive. Call (518) 353-6026 with questions.

In Malone, the two Stewart's Shops, at 289 West Main Street and 554 East Main Street, open at 4 a.m. and close at midnight every day. Both sell local milk, coffee to brew at home, Stewart's own ice cream by the half gallon, beer from a walk-in cooler, pizza and hot food. The Mobil at 593 East Main Street is open 24 hours, with a convenience store.

Wine, liquor and beer

New York splits the shopping. Supermarkets and convenience stores sell beer, and wine and spirits are sold only in licensed liquor stores. A bill to put wine on supermarket shelves died in committee when the 2026 legislative session ended in June, so the split holds for now.

  • The Jug Store, 44 Finney Boulevard, on the same street as Price Chopper, so one stop covers both. Its liquor-store license was newly issued on September 22, 2026.
  • Harison Wine & Liquor, 632 East Main Street, with regional New York wines among its stock. It opens at 9 a.m. Monday to Saturday and closes at 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; Sunday hours are shorter, ending at 6 p.m. The phone is (518) 651-0007.

Beer is easy: Price Chopper, ALDI, the Walmart Supercenter and both Stewart's Shops all hold licenses to sell it. Saranac Lake has three liquor stores of its own, Hair of the Dog Wine & Spirits at 49 Main Street, High Peaks Wine & Spirits at 251 Broadway and Adirondack Wine & Liquor at 506 Lake Flower Avenue, for guests who shop on the way up from the south. Every cabin lists wine glasses.

Sales tax and bottle deposits

Sales tax in Franklin County is 8 percent, state and local combined, the same rate as in Essex and Clinton counties. Most groceries are exempt: canned goods, dairy, fruit and vegetables, meat, bakery products and frozen food carry no tax. The tax does apply to food sold heated or ready to eat and to sandwiches, carbonated drinks, candy and pet food, so the deli counter and the soda aisle cost a little more at the register than on the shelf. Ice cream in a container is exempt, while a cone or a sundae made to order is taxed.

Stacked washer and dryer at The Modern Tiny Home
Stacked washer and dryer at The Modern Tiny Home

New York also charges a deposit of at least 5 cents on each can or bottle of beer, soda, bottled water, plain or sparkling, and wine coolers smaller than a gallon. Wine, spirits, milk, hard cider, juice and iced tea carry no deposit. Take the empties back to any store that sells the same type and brand, or to a redemption center, to get the deposits back; only containers bought in New York qualify, so cans carried down from Canada earn nothing. Until then, keep them secured with the garbage, the way the listings ask.

Pharmacies and first aid

Malone's Price Chopper has no pharmacy, so a prescription means one of these counters. Both Kinney counters close from 1 to 1:30 p.m. every day for lunch, and the Walmart counter from 1:30 to 2 p.m.

  • Kinney Drugs, 485 East Main Street, about 10.1 road miles from the cabins, with a drive-thru pharmacy. The pharmacy is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays; the store stays open until 9 p.m. on weekdays. Phone 518-483-3371.
  • Kinney Drugs, 3400 State Route 11, also with a drive-thru. The pharmacy is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Phone 518-483-4110.
  • The Walmart Supercenter pharmacy, 3222 State Route 11. It is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays, with a drive-thru. Phone 518-483-8724.

Both Kinney stores close on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2026. The Walgreens at 305 West Main Street keeps its store and photo counter open until 9 p.m., but its pharmacy was listed as closed in October 2026, so do not count on it for a prescription. On a day trip south, the Kinney Drugs at 277 Broadway in Saranac Lake opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays, with the same lunch break at its pharmacy counter. Each cabin lists a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Bring enough of any prescription for the whole stay; the health and safety page has the hospital, the walk-in clinic and the emergency numbers.

Fuel, propane and diesel

Fill the tank in Malone before you head south to the cabins.

  • Stewart's Shops, 289 West Main Street at Finney Boulevard: gas, 91-octane non-ethanol premium, diesel, kerosene, propane refills, free air and an ATM.
  • Stewart's Shops, 554 East Main Street: gas, 91-octane non-ethanol premium, propane refills, free air and an ATM.
  • The Mobil, 593 East Main Street: open 24 hours, with diesel.
  • Parkway Express, a Valero at 3385 US Route 11: gas, diesel, an ATM, a public restroom and a quick-service counter.

For a propane cylinder, Tractor Supply at 3184 State Route 11 refills tanks up to 100 pounds and sells the gas by the gallon, so you pay only for what goes in, and it advertises refills on evenings and weekends. It does not refill the one-pound cylinders that camp stoves use. The Walgreens on West Main Street lists a Blue Rhino tank exchange, for a swap rather than a refill.

Ask before you buy fuel for a cabin grill. The Modern Tiny Home's listing names a gas grill, while the listings for The Modern Pine and The Aviator say only that there is a grill, so ask the host what each one burns and whether a spare tank is on hand. For electric car charging in the village, see the Malone town guide.

Hardware, outdoor gear and bait

  • Adirondack Paint & Hardware, 670 East Main Street, an Ace Hardware store. Tools, hardware, lawn and garden supplies and grills, with key cutting, screen repair, paint color matching and propane refills or exchanges; it is also a service dealer for Husqvarna equipment. Call (518) 483-7694 for its hours before a weekend run.
  • Runnings, 230 West Main Street, the outdoor and work-gear store. Tents, coolers and sleeping gear; fishing tackle and hunting gear; insulated jackets, waterproof boots and base layers; and tools, lighting, rope and fire-starting supplies. It is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, and leashed pets are welcome inside. Phone (518) 795-9160.
  • Tractor Supply, 3184 State Route 11, for propane refills, pet food, garden supplies and hardware.
  • The Walmart Supercenter, for basic hardware and kitchen gear.

For fishing licenses, live bait and the rules on baitfish, see fishing trips, which lists the bait shops and guides. Skiers rent at the mountain; the Titus guide covers rentals and helmets, and the cross-country guide covers snowshoe and ski rentals farther south.

Firewood

None of the three listings mentions firewood, so ask the host what the fire pit at your cabin burns and whether wood is supplied before you buy any. Leave the wood at home either way. New York does not allow untreated firewood to be brought in from any other state or country, and wood grown in New York may not travel more than 50 miles from its source unless it has been heat-treated to 160°F for 75 minutes. If you buy wood, keep the receipt or label that shows where it came from; heat-treated wood carries a label reading "New York Approved Heat-Treated Firewood/Pest Free." The rule is there to keep tree-killing pests such as the emerald ash borer and the Asian longhorned beetle from spreading.

Laundry

Every cabin has its own washer and dryer, so most stays never need a laundromat. The listings for The Modern Pine and The Aviator also list a laundromat nearby, and East End Laundry, at 621 East Main Street in Malone, is a self-service laundromat with machines of several sizes, for loads too big for a cabin machine, such as sleeping bags or a comforter. It posts hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day and takes cashless payment through an app. No listing names laundry detergent, so bring a small bottle, though one guest at The Modern Tiny Home found plenty on hand:

they provided anything you could need in the event you forgot something (soaps/washes/laundry soap/cleaning supplies)

Hangers are listed at The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home, and the Tiny Home lists an iron.

Pet food and supplies

The cabins take pets for a fee, under strict rules: a 25-pound limit, house-trained pets only, and never left alone in the cabin. Tractor Supply on State Route 11 sells pet food from the big brands, and the PetVet clinic there takes walk-ins on some Sundays. The Walmart Supercenter has a pet department, and Runnings stocks pet travel gear. Pack the dog's usual food from home all the same. Pet-friendly cabins has the rules for each cabin, and bringing your dog has the vets, the trails and the border papers.

What the cabin kitchens already have

All three listings give the same kitchen basics: a refrigerator and a freezer, a stove and an oven, a microwave, a toaster, a hot water kettle and a coffee maker, which is a drip machine at The Modern Tiny Home. They list dishes and silverware, wine glasses, a dining table and cooking basics, which the listings define as pots and pans, oil, salt and pepper. Outside, each has a grill with barbecue utensils and a fire pit.

The differences are small but worth knowing before you shop. The Modern Pine and The Aviator have dishwashers and list cleaning products; The Modern Tiny Home lists neither. The Aviator is the only one that lists a baking sheet. One guest at The Aviator found more than the list promised:

Bathroom was stocked, kitchen had all necessary cleaning products.

In the bathrooms, all three list a hair dryer and hot water. The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home list the essentials, which Airbnb defines as towels, bed sheets, soap and toilet paper, while The Aviator's listing marks those essentials as not included even though it lists bed linens. All three mark shampoo as not included. For the cabins side by side, see the cabin comparison.

A first-night shopping list

This list comes from what the listings leave out. Ask the host about anything you are unsure of, since an item missing from a listing may still be in the cupboard.

Buy or bringWhy
Coffee, filters and teaThe listings name the coffee maker and the kettle, not what goes in them
Milk, butter, eggs and breadFor the first breakfast; the toaster and the stove are there
Spices and seasoningsThe cooking basics stop at oil, salt and pepper
Dish soap at The Modern Tiny HomeIts listing names no cleaning products; the other two list them
Laundry detergentEvery cabin has a washer; no listing names detergent
Paper towels, foil and trash bagsNot on any amenity list
Shampoo and conditionerAll three listings mark shampoo as not included
Towels, soap and toilet paper at The AviatorIts listing marks them as not included; ask the host before you buy
Food for the grillBarbecue utensils are listed; ask about fuel before you buy any
Marshmallows and fire startersFor the fire pit, once the host has told you about wood
Breakfast for a ski morningTitus and Malone lie in different directions from the cabins
Beer from the supermarket, wine from a liquor storeNew York sells them in different shops

Keep the trash secured until it goes out. The Modern Pine's listing warns that the property has wildlife and recommends keeping garbage secured, The Modern Tiny Home's asks guests to secure all garbage and food in the right containers, and The Aviator's asks that no food or garbage be left outside. For clothes and gear by season, see when to come and what to pack.

When the stores close

A late arrival or a forgotten item on a Sunday night comes down to these hours, which were the posted ones in October 2026. Holidays change them, so check before a late run. The pharmacy hours, Sundays included, are in the pharmacy section above.

Shopping south and east of the cabins

Guests who come up from the south on NY 30 reach the cabins before Malone, so Saranac Lake, about 43 road miles away, is the shopping stop on that route. The village has a Grand Union supermarket at 156 Church Street, an ALDI at 587 Lake Flower Avenue and Nori's Village Market, a natural food grocery and cafe, at 138 Church Street, along with the Kinney Drugs on Broadway and the liquor stores above. The directions page has the stores on each route in and the last miles to the cabins.

To the east, Chateaugay, about 22 road miles away, has a Stewart's at 195 East Main Street, open from 5 a.m. to midnight every day, with gas, propane refills, coffee, pizza and an ice cream counter. It is the stop for supplies on a day at High Falls and the Chateaugay Lakes.

Farm food and the farmers market

The Malone Farmers Market sets up on Wednesdays from noon to 5 p.m. under the pavilion at the Malone Town Office, across Route 11 from the Walmart Supercenter. Its 2026 season ran from May 13 to October 7, so until it returns in spring the farm store in Owls Head is the place for local food. In March, New York's Maple Weekends bring visitors to the sugarhouses that take part, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on most farms; the 2027 dates are March 13 and 14 and March 20 and 21. For restaurants and takeout when nobody wants to cook, see where to eat.

Questions

Where is the nearest grocery store to the cabins?

For basics, Cooks' Country Store, the self-checkout farm store at 189 Ragged Lake Road in Owls Head, about four road miles away, is open 24 hours with local milk, eggs, meat, coffee and everyday essentials. For a full shop, Malone's Price Chopper is about 10.3 road miles away and open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, with ALDI and the Walmart Supercenter on State Route 11.

Does the Price Chopper in Malone have a pharmacy?

No. Prescriptions go to Kinney Drugs, at 485 East Main Street or 3400 State Route 11, or to the Walmart Supercenter pharmacy. On Sundays the Kinney counters open at 9 a.m. and close at 4 or 5 p.m., and Walmart's runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Walgreens on West Main Street listed its pharmacy as closed in October 2026, so bring enough medicine for the whole stay.

Where can I buy wine and liquor near the cabins?

In New York, wine and spirits come only from liquor stores. In Malone that means The Jug Store, 44 Finney Boulevard, on the same street as Price Chopper, or Harison Wine & Liquor, 632 East Main Street. Beer is sold at the supermarkets and at both Stewart's Shops. Every cabin lists wine glasses.

Can I bring firewood from home for the fire pit?

Not from another state or country: New York bans untreated firewood from outside the state, and wood grown in the state may not travel more than 50 miles from its source unless it is heat-treated and labeled. The listings say nothing about firewood, so ask the host what your cabin's fire pit uses before you buy any, and keep the receipt if you do.

Where can I refill a propane tank in Malone?

Tractor Supply at 3184 State Route 11 refills tanks up to 100 pounds by the gallon, and both Stewart's Shops in Malone list propane refills. Adirondack Paint & Hardware, the Ace store at 670 East Main Street, offers refills or exchanges. Ask the host before you buy fuel for a cabin grill; only The Modern Tiny Home's listing names a gas grill.

What do the cabin kitchens already have?

All three list a refrigerator, freezer, stove, oven, microwave, toaster, kettle and coffee maker, with dishes, wine glasses and cooking basics of pots and pans, oil, salt and pepper, plus a grill and a fire pit outside. The Modern Pine and The Aviator add dishwashers. Bring coffee, spices, detergent and shampoo; what to pack has the rest.

Can I have groceries delivered to the cabin?

Price Chopper offers delivery and pickup through Instacart, and ALDI offers curbside pickup or delivery when you order online, but the cabins sit on rural roads about ten miles from town, so check that the app accepts your cabin's address first. Ordering ahead for pickup on the drive in is the safer plan.

Is there a laundromat near the cabins?

You will rarely need one, because every cabin has its own washer and dryer. For loads too big for a cabin machine, East End Laundry is a self-service laundromat at 621 East Main Street in Malone, with posted hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. No listing names laundry detergent, so bring a small bottle.
