From Washington, DC to the cabins
About 554 road miles, about nine hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.
From the U.S. Capitol the cabins are about 554 road miles north, nine hours of driving on a clear road before any stops. The quickest way runs up I-95 through Baltimore and Delaware, the length of the New Jersey Turnpike, then the Thruway and the Northway into the High Peaks. A second way, through Frederick and Harrisburg and up I-81 to Syracuse and US 11, is only a few miles longer and has almost no tolls. The host's tip for a drive this long: leave by about 7 a.m., or split it with a night in Harrisburg, Binghamton or Albany and arrive fresh. Here are both routes, with the stops, the winter and holiday timing, the flights from Reagan National, Dulles and BWI, and a plan for getting to the cabin door on a Friday.
Choosing a route
Both measurements run from the Capitol to the cabins on OpenStreetMap's road network, and both times assume dry pavement and no stops.
| Route | By I-95 and the Northway | By I-270, US 15 and I-81 |
|---|---|---|
| Road miles | About 554 | About 560 |
| Driving time, clear road | About 9 hours | About 9 hours and 10 minutes |
| Main roads | Baltimore-Washington Parkway, I-895, I-95, the New Jersey Turnpike, NJ 17, the Thruway, the Northway, NY 73, NY 86, NY 30 | I-270, US 15, I-81, I-781, US 11 |
| Cities on the way | Baltimore, Newark (Delaware), Newark (New Jersey), Albany, Saratoga Springs | Frederick, Harrisburg, Scranton, Binghamton, Syracuse |
| Tolls | Maryland, Delaware, the New Jersey Turnpike, the Thruway | None if you stay on I-81 through Scranton |
| Last supermarket | Saranac Lake, 43 road miles before the cabins | Malone, about 10 road miles before the cabins |
The router this site uses for every distance picks the I-95 way, by about ten minutes. On paper that is a tie, so let the day decide. The I-95 way pays tolls in four states and finishes with more than an hour and a half of two-lane road through Keene, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. The I-81 way stays well west of New York City and finishes on US 11 through the villages of St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, and north of Syracuse it crosses the lake-effect snow belt east of Lake Ontario. From May to October either one works. In winter, check the forecast for both the night before.
The I-95 way in stretches
Mileage and times are rounded and leave out stops.
| Stretch | Roads | Places on the way | Road miles | About |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Capitol to Baltimore | DC 295 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway | Greenbelt, Severn | 33 | 40 minutes |
| Baltimore to the Delaware Memorial Bridge | I-895 through the Harbor Tunnel, I-95, I-295 | Abingdon, Havre de Grace, Elkton, Newark (Delaware) | 76 | 1 hour 10 minutes |
| Across New Jersey | The New Jersey Turnpike | Pennsville, Mount Laurel, Hamilton, Cranbury, East Brunswick, Carteret, Newark | 106 | 1 hour 35 minutes |
| Newark to the New York line | The Turnpike's Western Spur, I-80, NJ 17 | Bogota, Waldwick, Mahwah | 34 | 35 minutes |
| Suffern to Albany | The Thruway, I-87 | The Hudson Valley | 112 | 1 hour 40 minutes |
| Albany to Northway exit 30 | I-87, the Adirondack Northway | Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Schroon Lake | 112 | 1 hour 40 minutes |
| Exit 30 to the cabins | US 9, NY 73, NY 86, NY 30, county roads | Keene, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake | 81 | 1 hour 40 minutes |
Four hours in, at Suffern, you have covered almost half the miles, and from there the drive is the one New Yorkers take. The drive from New York City goes through the Thruway, the Northway and the High Peaks stretch by stretch, with the Thruway's service areas, so this page stops at the state line.
Maryland and Delaware on I-95
From the Capitol, East Capitol Street and Independence Avenue lead to DC 295, the Kenilworth Avenue Freeway, and about six miles out you are on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, which carries you 27 miles past Greenbelt and Severn to Baltimore. The route ducks under the harbor on I-895, the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Thruway, and joins I-95 northeast of the city.
That stretch of I-95 is the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway, a 50-mile run from the Baltimore city line to Delaware that opened in November 1963. Its toll is collected northbound only, at a plaza a mile north of the Tydings Bridge over the Susquehanna, so you pay going up and drive home free. The harbor tunnel is a toll crossing too. Carry an E-ZPass and check the Maryland Transportation Authority's current rates before you go.
Maryland's two I-95 travel plazas sit on this stretch. The Maryland House is at mile marker 82, between exits 80 and 85 near Aberdeen, and the Chesapeake House at mile marker 97, between exits 93 and 100 near North East. Areas USA runs both under a state contract that lasts until 2047, and both added electric car chargers in 2017. The route then spends less than 20 miles in Delaware. The I-95 toll plaza at Newark has charged a car $5.00, cash or E-ZPass, since August 15, 2025, and the Biden Welcome Center, the state's I-95 service plaza at Newark, is the place for a meal in Delaware.
At about 106 miles the route takes I-295 over the Delaware Memorial Bridge into New Jersey. The Delaware River and Bay Authority, which runs the bridge, posts lane closures for its maintenance work on its own site, so check it the day before you drive.
The New Jersey Turnpike
The Turnpike begins just past the bridge, and the route rides it about 106 miles to Newark. The northbound service areas come up in this order:
- John Fenwick, milepost 5.4 in Oldmans Township, Salem County, the first stop in New Jersey, rebuilt in 2024.
- James Fenimore Cooper, milepost 39.4, between interchanges 4 and 5 in Mount Laurel.
The service areas from Woodrow Wilson, at milepost 58.7, up to Newark are listed on the drive from Philadelphia, which joins this Turnpike route at Mansfield. At Newark the route leaves the main line for the Western Spur, takes I-80 for a short run, and follows NJ 17 north through Bergen County past Bogota and Waldwick to the New York line at Mahwah. The Thruway begins at Suffern, about 249 road miles from the Capitol.
The I-81 way in stretches
| Stretch | Roads | Places on the way | Road miles | About |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Capitol to Frederick | Canal Road, the Clara Barton Parkway, the Beltway, I-270 | North Bethesda, Clarksburg | 49 | 55 minutes |
| Frederick to Harrisburg | US 15, then PA 581 and I-83 | Thurmont, Emmitsburg, Gettysburg, York County | 76 | 1 hour 20 minutes |
| Harrisburg to Clarks Summit | I-81 | Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre, Scranton | 123 | 1 hour 55 minutes |
| Clarks Summit to Binghamton | I-81 | Great Bend, Kirkwood | 52 | 50 minutes |
| Binghamton to Syracuse | I-81 | Cortland, Homer | 68 | 1 hour |
| Syracuse to Fort Drum | I-81, then I-781 | Pulaski, Adams, Watertown | 79 | 1 hour 10 minutes |
| Fort Drum to the cabins | US 11, then County Route 25 | Antwerp, Gouverneur, Canton, Potsdam, Malone | 115 | 2 hours 5 minutes |
From the Capitol the measured line follows Constitution Avenue, the Whitehurst Freeway and Canal Road out along the Potomac, then the Clara Barton and Cabin John parkways to the Beltway and the I-270 spur. From most of Northwest Washington and Montgomery County you will join I-270 your own way. Past Frederick, US 15 climbs north along the Catoctin Mountains through Thurmont and Emmitsburg, crosses into Pennsylvania in Adams County, skirts Gettysburg and runs through York County to the Susquehanna at Harrisburg.
I-81 then heads northeast through Dauphin, Lebanon and Schuylkill counties, past Hazleton and into the Wyoming Valley. Here the router's line takes a shortcut on the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension, which is tolled. Staying on I-81 through Wilkes-Barre and Scranton costs nothing and adds about ten minutes by the router's count. North of Scranton, I-81 crosses Susquehanna County to the New York line and Binghamton, about 300 road miles from the Capitol.
In New York the road climbs through Cortland County to Syracuse, about 368 road miles out, and then runs north through Oswego and Jefferson counties. Syracuse is rebuilding its stretch of I-81; the drive from Syracuse has what to expect there. Past Watertown, the measured route takes I-781 at Fort Drum to US 11 and follows US 11 northeast through Antwerp, Gouverneur, Canton and Potsdam to Malone; the drive from Watertown covers that last part, with its stops. The cabins are about ten road miles south of Malone.
Baltimore and the Maryland suburbs
From Baltimore the choice is easier. From City Hall the quickest route is I-83, the Jones Falls Expressway, north out of the city, around the Beltway for a mile and up I-83 through Baltimore County and York to I-81 at Harrisburg, 85 miles out; from there it is the I-81 way above. That is about 520 road miles and eight hours and twenty minutes of driving, more than half an hour quicker than from the Capitol. From Montgomery County and Frederick, I-270 to US 15 is the natural start for the I-81 way. From Northern Virginia, the Beltway north across the Potomac reaches I-270, and for the I-95 way the Beltway around the east side reaches I-95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
Snow, storms and road reports
Snow on the way up is a different thing from snow at home. On the 1991 to 2020 normals, Reagan National averages about 14 inches of snow a winter and BWI about 19. Malone, ten road miles north of the cabins, averages 95 inches, 22 of them in January. Two stretches deserve a look at the forecast before you leave. On the I-81 way, the miles between Syracuse and Watertown run through the lake-effect belt, where Lake Ontario snow falls in narrow, heavy bands. On the I-95 way, NY 73 between the Northway and Lake Placid climbs to about 2,200 feet near Upper Cascade Lake, the highest stretch of that route. The winter driving guide covers tires, the emergency kit and what to do when a warning is up.
Each state has its own road report: 511PA for Pennsylvania and 511NY for New York. Pennsylvania restricts I-81 in heavy storms, and the Philadelphia page explains the rules it used in January 2025. In a storm on the Pennsylvania side, the I-95 way may be the better choice that day, and the reverse when a lake-effect warning covers Oswego and Jefferson counties.
Federal holidays and fall color
Federal holidays shape a lot of Washington travel plans, this drive included. In the season ahead they fall on Columbus Day, Monday, October 12; Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11; Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26; and then, in 2027, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18, Washington's Birthday on Monday, February 15, Memorial Day on Monday, May 31, Juneteenth, observed on Friday, June 18, Independence Day, observed on Monday, July 5, Labor Day on Monday, September 6, and Columbus Day on Monday, October 11. A Monday holiday turns a nine-hour drive into a fair trade for three nights. For a fall trip, the fall foliage guide has the timing of the color near the cabins.
Breaking the drive
The easiest way to do nine hours is in two pieces: leave after work on Thursday, sleep on the road, and finish on Friday. Both routes split neatly. On the I-81 way, Harrisburg is about 125 road miles out and Binghamton about 300, leaving about 260 for the second day. On the I-95 way, Albany is about 361 road miles out, which leaves about 190. Check-in is after 4 p.m., so from Binghamton or Albany the second day has no rush: a late breakfast and a stop on the way still put you at the cabin by check-in. Harrisburg suits a late Thursday start and leaves a full day's drive for Friday. The drive from Albany and the drive from Syracuse pick up from those cities.
Flying from Reagan National, Dulles or BWI
Every Washington airport has a way to get you close. Burlington, Vermont, is 116 road miles from the cabins, or 94 with the ferry across Lake Champlain, and it has nonstops from all three: American from Reagan National, United from Dulles and Breeze from BWI. Seven rental companies have desks at Burlington's airport, and the drive from Burlington has the route around the top of the lake.
Plattsburgh International is closer, about 64 road miles from the cabins. Contour Airlines flies nonstop from Dulles to Plattsburgh on 30-seat Embraer jets, and connecting tickets can be booked through United and American. Flight times change with the season, so check Contour's current timetable and pick a flight that lands with time to collect a car and reach the cabins in daylight. The Avis counter at Plattsburgh's airport lists hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; on a late flight, arrange a car you can collect after it lands.
Two other airports need a word. Adirondack Regional at Lake Clear, about 40 road miles from the cabins, has Cape Air flights only to Boston and New York's JFK, none to Washington. Air Canada sells flights to Montreal-Trudeau from both Dulles and Reagan National; check which run nonstop on your dates. From Montreal the cabins are about 83 to 103 road miles depending on the border crossing, and a passport or other approved document is needed to come back into the United States. The airports guide and the border guide cover both.
The train from Union Station
Amtrak can do it in one long day, with an early alarm. On weekdays, Acela train 2150 leaves Washington Union Station at 4:47 a.m. and reaches Moynihan Train Hall in New York at 7:57 a.m.; on Saturdays, train 2250 leaves at 4:48 a.m. and arrives at 8:00. The Adirondack leaves Moynihan daily at 8:15 a.m. and reaches Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m., and Plattsburgh is about 61 road miles from the cabins, so you still need a rental car there. That is a tight connection in New York and about 13 hours from Union Station to the cabin door. Going home, the southbound Adirondack leaves Plattsburgh at 2:45 p.m. and reaches New York at 10:15 p.m., so plan a night in New York. Check the timetables for your dates.
A Friday arrival
Nine hours of driving fits a long weekend best: take the Friday off and leave in the morning. With about nine hours at the wheel and an hour for fuel, food and a stretch, the leave-by times below get you to the cabin by sunset:
| Departure day | Cabin sunset | Leave the Capitol by |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday, November 25, 2026, before Thanksgiving | 4:22 p.m. | About 6:20 a.m. |
| Friday, January 15, 2027, Martin Luther King Jr. weekend | 4:43 p.m. | About 6:45 a.m. |
| Friday, February 12, 2027, Washington's Birthday weekend | 5:22 p.m. | About 7:20 a.m. |
| Friday, May 28, 2027, Memorial Day weekend | 8:33 p.m. | About 10:30 a.m. |
| Friday, July 2, 2027, Independence Day weekend | 8:48 p.m. | About 10:45 a.m. |
| Friday, September 3, 2027, Labor Day weekend | 7:32 p.m. | About 9:30 a.m. |
| Friday, October 8, 2027, Columbus Day weekend | 6:27 p.m. | About 8:25 a.m. |
In summer the light is generous, and the 4 p.m. check-in is the limit: a 7 a.m. start gets you in around 5. In winter, leave at first light, or break the trip on Thursday night. If you will arrive late, tell the host your time well ahead.
Groceries and the last town
Where you shop depends on the route. On the I-95 way the route goes right through Saranac Lake, 43 road miles before the cabins, where the Grand Union on Church Street keeps hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily; the Price Chopper on Saranac Avenue in Lake Placid, a little off the route, lists 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. On the I-81 way, Malone is the last town, about ten road miles from the cabins. Its Price Chopper at 53 Finney Boulevard lists 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, and the Stewart's at 289 West Main Street, right on US 11, sells gas and diesel. Malone also has the closest hospital, UVM Health's Alice Hyde Medical Center, with a 24-hour emergency department. The groceries page has the other stores, and getting to the cabins has the last miles, where the host's directions beat a phone map.
What Washington guests come back for
Guests from Washington have left three reviews of The Modern Tiny Home, in September 2020, October 2021 and December 2023, and the last two came from repeat visits. The first guests wrote that they loved using the grill, the hot tub and the fire pit at night:
It was exactly how we imagined it and had everything we needed.
The October 2021 review opened, "We were very happy to return to the cabin for a second time." The December 2023 guests, on another return trip, wrote that the "Location is excellent for visiting Titus mountain" and recommended the cabin "for a winter getaway." Titus Mountain is three and a half road miles from the cabins, and the ski cabins page has the plan for a ski weekend. A guest from Rising Sun, Maryland, stayed at the same cabin in October 2025 and gave it five stars. All three cabins sleep four, each with its own hot tub, fire pit and full kitchen, and the listings rule out children under 10.
Heading home
Checkout is by 11 a.m., which puts you back in Washington around 9 p.m. with an hour of stops. Going south on the I-95 way, the Kennedy Highway toll is behind you, since Maryland collects it northbound only. On the I-81 way, Binghamton, about 263 road miles from the cabins, is close to halfway and a natural lunch stop. To skip a late arrival, stop for the night in Albany or Binghamton and finish the drive on the holiday Monday.
Questions
Which way is quicker from Washington?
On a clear road they are a tie. By I-95, the New Jersey Turnpike, the Thruway and the Northway it is about 554 road miles and nine hours; by I-270, US 15 and I-81 it is about 560 miles and nine hours and ten minutes. Pick by the day: the I-81 way has almost no tolls and crosses the lake-effect belt north of Syracuse, and the I-95 way ends on mountain roads through Keene and Lake Placid.
What tolls are there on the I-95 way?
Maryland charges at Baltimore's harbor tunnel and on the Kennedy Highway, whose toll is collected northbound only, a mile past the Susquehanna bridge. Delaware's I-95 plaza at Newark has charged a car $5.00 since August 2025. Then come the New Jersey Turnpike and the Thruway. Carry an E-ZPass. The I-81 way is free if you stay on I-81 through Scranton.
Is there work on the Delaware Memorial Bridge?
Until November 24, 2026, the two right lanes of the New Jersey-bound span are closed around the clock for joint replacement. Cars heading for the Turnpike or US 40 can use a bypass lane on the other span, and the bridge authority expects northbound delays at rush hours and on busy weekends. The I-81 way avoids the bridge.
Where should we break the drive?
On the I-81 way, Harrisburg is about 125 road miles from the Capitol and Binghamton about 300; on the I-95 way, Albany is about 361, leaving about 190 for the morning. Check-in is after 4 p.m., so from Binghamton or Albany the second day is an easy one. The Albany and Syracuse pages pick up from there.
Can we fly from Washington?
Yes. Contour flies nonstop from Dulles to Plattsburgh, about 64 road miles from the cabins. Burlington, Vermont, 116 road miles away, has American from Reagan National, United from Dulles and Breeze from BWI, and seven rental companies at the airport. Lake Clear's flights go only to Boston and New York. See airports near the cabins.
How far is it from Baltimore?
From Baltimore's City Hall it is about 520 road miles and eight hours and twenty minutes: I-83 north through York to Harrisburg, I-81 through Scranton, Binghamton and Syracuse, and US 11 through Potsdam to Malone, the last town, about ten road miles from the cabins.
