Events through the Year
Events near the cabins month by month: the Saranac Lake carnival, maple weekends, Lake Placid's World Cups and IRONMAN, the Malone fair, fall color and hunting.
Some weeks are worth planning a stay around. This calendar runs month by month through the events within reach of the cabins, from the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival in February to the Franklin County Fair in August and the Battle of Plattsburgh weekend in September. Exact dates appear only where the people who run an event have published them for 2026 or 2027; everything else is listed by the month it usually falls in, so check each one before you book. Malone is about 10 road miles from the cabins, Saranac Lake 43, Lake Placid 52 and Plattsburgh 61.

January
Ski and sled season. January is the middle of the ski season at Titus Mountain, the family ski area three and a half road miles from the cabins, and of the snowmobile season on the C7 corridor. Titus had not posted a 2026-27 opening date by early October. In recent winters it has opened anywhere from mid-November to the week before Christmas, depending on snow, and stayed open 100 days or more. The Titus guide has the lifts, the night skiing and the tickets.
World Cup aerials in Lake Placid. On January 16 and 17, 2027, the Olympic Jumping Complex holds the Lake Placid Freestyle Cup: World Cup aerials for men and women, with qualifying and finals, and a mixed team event on the Sunday. The skiers are judged on air, form and landing, and the finals run at night under the lights. Practice on January 14 and 15 is free to watch, and tickets for the competition are to be sold through the jumping complex. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, January 18, 2027, so the aerials land on a three-day weekend.
Bobsled at Mt Van Hoevenberg. No bobsled, skeleton or luge World Cup comes to Lake Placid in the 2026-27 season; neither federation's World Cup calendar includes the track this winter. The track does host North American Cup bobsled and skeleton races, with the Pan American bobsled championships, from January 7 to 16, 2027. The Olympic venues guide covers the track, the jumps and the public rides.

Igloofest in Montreal. Montreal's outdoor winter electronic music festival fills the Jacques-Cartier Pier in the Old Port from January 14 to February 6, 2027, with DJs, a snowsuit contest and the Igloovillage. Plan the drive home around a border crossing that is open when you return; the Montreal day trip lays out the crossings.
The Quadrantids. The year's first meteor shower peaks on the night of January 3 to 4, 2027, under a thin crescent moon. Under dark skies it averages about 25 meteors an hour, but the 2027 peak is timed for Europe and western Asia, so expect less here.
February
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. The village's carnival, held since 1897, runs from February 5 to 14, 2027, with the theme Wizards and Dragons, an ice palace on Lake Flower lit every night and the Gala Parade on Saturday, February 13. An all-volunteer committee runs it, and volunteers build the palace. The carnival guide has the palace, the fireworks, parking and a full day plan.

Empire State Winter Games. The 47th games run from February 4 to 7, 2027. A torch relay of about 700 miles ends at an opening ceremony, and three days of competition follow, in Lake Placid, at Whiteface, in Saranac Lake, which holds the youth hockey and some cross-country races, and in Tupper Lake, home to the sled hockey.
World Cup ski jumping and Nordic combined. Men's and women's ski jumping and Nordic combined World Cups come to Lake Placid from February 5 to 7, 2027. The jumping competitions, an individual event on the large HS128 hill and a mixed team event, are set for February 6 and 7 at the Olympic Jumping Complex. Put it together and the carnival's opening weekend, the winter games and the World Cups all fall within about ten road miles of each other.
Montréal en Lumière. Montreal's winter festival runs from February 18 to 28, 2027.

Free fishing. New York waives the freshwater fishing license on a few days each year, and in 2026 the first of them were February 14 and 15, a Saturday and Sunday; all other fishing rules still apply. Look for the 2027 dates in the new year. Presidents' Day falls on Monday, February 15, in 2027.
March
Maple Weekends. New York's sugarhouses open to visitors on two weekends a year, organized by the New York State Maple Producers' Association. In 2027 they are March 13 and 14 and March 20 and 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. unless a farm sets its own hours, and the tours and samples are free at most sites; museums are the exception. The 2026 weekends fell a week later, on March 21 and 22 and March 28 and 29. Sugarhouses near Malone, in Burke and around Chateaugay have opened for past maple weekends, and the producer map on the Maple Weekend site shows who is open each year.
Mountain Madness at Titus. Titus throws its spring party on a Saturday in early or mid-March. In 2026 it was March 14, with a pancake breakfast, a family race, pond skimming, a cardboard sled race, free sugarhouse tours, live music and fireworks at 7:45 p.m. In recent winters the lifts have closed between late March and early April, snow permitting.
March is still winter. Malone's normals for the month are a high of 36°F, a low of 16°F and about 15 inches of snow.
April and May
Trout season. The season opens on April 1 on most streams and runs to October 15. Anglers 16 and older need a New York license; a resident's annual license is $25 and a nonresident's $50, with one-day and seven-day licenses for visitors. The Salmon River guide covers the trout water in Malone.
Mud season. April averages a high of 51°F and a low of 32°F in Malone, with about 7 inches of snow, and by May the high reaches 64°F. Two meteor showers come and go: the Lyrids peak on April 21 and 22, 2027, under a full moon that will wash many of them out, and the eta Aquariids on May 5 and 6, 2027, under a moon only 2 percent lit, at 10 to 30 an hour just before dawn.
The Malone Farmers Market. The market usually opens in mid-May (May 13 in 2026) and runs on Wednesdays from noon to 5 p.m. under the pavilion at the Malone Town Office, across Route 11 from Walmart, until early October.
The Almanzo Wilder Farm. The boyhood farm of Almanzo Wilder in Burke, the setting of Farmer Boy, usually opens for the season on Memorial Day weekend. In 2026 opening day was May 23, the Saturday of that weekend, and through August the farm gave tours Wednesday to Sunday at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., at $16 for adults and $9 for ages 6 to 16. The farm is about 13 road miles from the cabins; see the Wilder farm guide. Memorial Day falls on May 31 in 2027.
Black flies arrive in mid-May and peak in late May and early June; the bugs guide covers when and how to deal with them.
June
The Lake Placid Horse Show. The horse show grounds at 5514 Cascade Road hold two weeks of shows each summer. In 2027 the Lake Placid Horse Show runs from June 29 to July 4, followed by the I Love NY Horse Show; in 2026 they ran a week earlier, from June 23 to 28 and June 30 to July 6. In 2026 the featured class was the $100,000 FEI three-star Richard Feldman Grand Prix.
Free fishing weekend. In 2026 the summer free fishing weekend was June 27 and 28; the state sets the dates each year.
Fun on the Farm. In 2026 the Wilder farm held Fun on the Farm, a children's day with traditional games, shingle shaving and farm animals, on June 20. Watch the farm's events page for the 2027 date.
The Montreal Jazz Festival. The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal runs from June 25 to July 4, 2027, in the Quartier des spectacles downtown, with some 3,000 musicians from more than 30 countries and most of its indoor and outdoor concerts free.
July
Horse shows, week two. The I Love NY Horse Show follows the Lake Placid Horse Show from July 6 to 11, 2027, on the same grounds. Independence Day falls on a Sunday in 2027, so the federal holiday is observed on Monday, July 5.
IRONMAN Lake Placid. The race comes on Sunday, July 25, 2027. It is the second-oldest IRONMAN in North America and marks 28 years in 2027. The course is a 2.4-mile swim in Mirror Lake, starting at 6:30 a.m., then 112 miles on the bike through the mountains and a marathon that finishes at the Olympic speed skating oval. Temporary road closures start at 5 a.m. on race day, and the race publishes the affected roads and the detours. Rooms in Lake Placid can sell out as much as a year ahead, which is one reason to stay at the cabins and drive in. Unless you are there to watch, plan your Lake Placid day for another date; the Lake Placid and Whiteface guide has the rest of the summer.
Summer at the Wilder farm. Tours run Wednesday to Sunday through the end of August, and the visitor center, with its museum and gift shop, costs nothing to enter.
August
The Franklin County Fair. The Franklin County Agricultural Society runs the fair at the fairgrounds at 606 East Main Street in Malone, usually for nine days in mid-August. The 2026 fair, the 176th, ran from August 8 to 16, and it is the fair described in Farmer Boy. Each night has a grandstand show: in 2026 those ran from a demolition derby, a rodeo and truck and tractor pulls to concerts by the Gin Blossoms and by Great White with Sebastian Bach, at $10 to $69 for adults, with one free night and children under 5 free at most shows. The 2027 dates had not been posted by early October 2026. The fair guide has the midway, the barns and the grandstand.
The Perseids. The August shower peaks on August 12 and 13, 2027. From dark rural places it gives 30 to 50 meteors an hour at its best, but in 2027 a moon 79 percent lit will wash out the fainter ones while it is up. One guest wrote of an October stay: "We were lucky to watch deer through the massive windows and see a shooting star while soaking in the hot tub." The stargazing post has the rest of the sky.
September
The Battle of Plattsburgh commemoration. On September 11, 1814, an American squadron defeated the invading British in a naval battle on Lake Champlain at Plattsburgh, and the city marks the anniversary every year, usually on the weekend nearest the date. A nonprofit, 1814 Commemoration Inc., runs the free weekend with the City of Plattsburgh; the first three-day commemoration was held in the fall of 1998. The program mixes reenactments and ceremonies, 19th-century trades and children's games, history talks and walking tours, a period-dress ball, concerts, fireworks and a parade; in 2026 the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division Band played and the military-themed parade was on Saturday. The War of 1812 Museum at 31 Washington Road is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., from May through October 31, 2026, and charges no general admission. Plattsburgh is about 61 road miles away; see the Plattsburgh guide.
The 90-Miler. The Adirondack Canoe Classic, run by the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, takes three days to paddle 90 miles from Old Forge, through the Fulton Chain, Raquette Lake and Long Lake, to the state boat launch on Lake Flower in Saranac Lake, the same spot where the winter ice palace stands. The route is the first 90 miles of the 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and more than 500 paddlers take part. It usually runs in early or mid-September: September 5 to 7 in 2025 and September 11 to 13 in 2026.
Shorter hours and the first hunters. In September the Wilder farm moves to weekends, with tours at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. through September 30 in 2026, and Thursday and Friday tours by appointment. Bowhunting for deer opened in the Northern Zone on September 27 in 2026. National Hunting and Fishing Day, September 26 in 2026, was another free fishing day. Labor Day falls on September 6 in 2027.
October
Fall color. The state's foliage report comes out every Wednesday afternoon in the fall, built on reports from more than 100 volunteer observers. For the week of September 30 to October 6, 2026, Malone was at 40 percent change, Saranac Lake at 65 percent and near peak, Lake Placid at 75 percent and peak, and Tupper Lake and Mt. Arab at 85 percent. The fall color guide has the drives.
Oktoberfest at Titus. Titus Mountain usually holds its Oktoberfest on the first Saturday of October: the 44th was on October 4, 2025, and the 45th on October 3, 2026. In 2026 admission was $5, children 12 and under got in free, the chairlift and hay rides were free, three bands played through the day and fireworks went up at dusk.
Flaming Leaves in Lake Placid. The national championships in ski jumping and Nordic combined come with a festival at the Olympic Jumping Complex, with live music, food trucks and vendors; in 2026 it falls on October 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Wilder farm's last weekend. In 2026 the farm opens for Indigenous Peoples Day weekend, October 10 to 12, with tours at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and at 10 and noon on Monday, then by appointment through mid-October. The Malone Farmers Market's last day in 2026 is October 7.
Hunting season. In the Northern Zone the early muzzleloader season runs from October 17 to 23, 2026, and the regular deer season from October 24 to December 6. Hikers share the woods with hunters these weeks: wear blaze orange or blaze pink, keep dogs on a leash, and give them a bright collar or vest. The Orionid meteor shower peaks on October 21 and 22, 2026, at 10 to 20 an hour, with a moon about three-quarters lit.
November
The Lake Placid Film Festival. The 25th festival runs from November 5 to 8, 2026, at the Palace Theatre, which turns 100 this year. Adirondack Film, a nonprofit, runs it, and the competition takes in 10 feature films, 30 shorts and six television scripts.
Veterans Day. November 11, 2026 is New York's last free fishing day of the year. The same night brings the peak of the Northern Taurids under a nearly dark moon, and the Leonids follow on November 16 and 17.
Santa's Workshop. The park at North Pole, closed through the summer and fall of 2026 for upgrades, reopens for holiday weekends from late November 2026. Its posted schedule has it open on Saturdays and Sundays only, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with the entrance closing at 2, until December 20. See the Santa's Workshop guide.
The regular deer season runs through the whole month. Malone averages 9 inches of snow in November, up from 2 in October, with a high of 43°F. Thanksgiving is November 26 in 2026.
December
Ski season. Titus usually opens between mid-November and late December, once there is snow to ski or make, and the cabins' ski season starts with it. Check the mountain's site for the opening day.
The Village of Lights. Santa's Workshop lights its village on the evenings of December 6, 13, 20, 21 and 22, 2026, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., with the entrance closing at 7.
The Holiday Village Stroll. Lake Placid's Holiday Village Stroll runs from December 11 to 13, 2026. Recent strolls have included a skating party at the Olympic Center, photos with Santa and a tree lighting at Mid's Park.
The Geminids. Usually the strongest meteor shower of the year, the Geminids peak on December 13 and 14, 2026, with a moon only 15 percent lit. Gemini is well placed from 10 p.m., so the show starts before midnight, early enough for a long soak in the hot tub. The Ursids follow on December 21 and 22 at 5 to 10 an hour, under a bright moon.
Late seasons. Late bowhunting and muzzleloader seasons run from December 7 to 13, 2026, in the parts of the Northern Zone where they are open, so keep the bright colors on for winter walks in the woods. Malone's December normals are a high of 30°F, a low of 13°F and about 21 inches of snow.

Planning a stay around an event
Most of these events sit within an hour or so of the cabins: Titus is minutes away, Malone about twenty minutes, Saranac Lake about an hour and Lake Placid an hour and a quarter. A few weekends need planning ahead. In 2027 the first weekend of February brings the carnival, the winter games and the World Cups at once, and IRONMAN fills Lake Placid in late July. For Montreal's festivals, U.S. citizens 16 and older need a passport, a passport card, a NEXUS card or an enhanced driver's license to come back into the United States, and children under 16 who are U.S. citizens can show a birth certificate. The Trout River crossing on NY 30 is closed to U.S.-bound traffic until about May 2028.
Each cabin sleeps four, and The Modern Pine and The Aviator share one property, so a group of eight can book both for a big weekend. The cabin comparison shows the differences, and the seasons pages describe what each time of year is like at the cabins, with the weather and what to pack.
Questions
Which events are worth planning a stay around?
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival in February (February 5 to 14 in 2027), the Maple Weekends in March, the Franklin County Fair in Malone, usually in mid-August, the Battle of Plattsburgh weekend in September and the fall color in early October. In winter 2027 Lake Placid adds World Cup aerials on January 16 and 17 and World Cup ski jumping and Nordic combined from February 5 to 7.
When is the Franklin County Fair?
The fair usually runs for nine days in mid-August at the fairgrounds on East Main Street in Malone, about ten road miles from the cabins. In 2026 the 176th fair ran from August 8 to 16. The 2027 dates had not been posted in early October 2026; the fair guide has the rest.
When does the fall color peak near the cabins?
It moves with elevation and with the year. The state's foliage report for September 30 to October 6, 2026 had Lake Placid at peak, Saranac Lake near peak and Malone at 40 percent change. The report comes out every Wednesday afternoon in the fall; the fall color guide has the drives.
Is it safe to hike during hunting season?
Yes, with care. In the Northern Zone in 2026, bowhunting opened on September 27, the early muzzleloader season runs from October 17 to 23 and the regular deer season from October 24 to December 6. Wear blaze orange or blaze pink, keep dogs leashed with a bright collar or vest, and stay on established trails.
Are there World Cup events in Lake Placid in 2026-27?
Yes: freestyle aerials at the Olympic Jumping Complex on January 16 and 17, 2027, and men's and women's ski jumping and Nordic combined from February 5 to 7, 2027, with the jumping on February 6 and 7. There is no bobsled, skeleton or luge World Cup in Lake Placid this season; the track hosts North American Cup races and the Pan American bobsled championships in January. See the Olympic venues guide.
Which meteor showers are best from the hot tub?
The Geminids on December 13 and 14, 2026 come with a moon only 15 percent lit and get going before midnight. The Perseids on August 12 and 13, 2027 are warmer to watch, though a bright moon will hide the faint ones. The stargazing post has more on the night sky at the cabins.
What should we know about IRONMAN weekend?
IRONMAN Lake Placid is on Sunday, July 25, 2027. Road closures around Lake Placid start at 5 a.m., and rooms in the village can sell out as much as a year ahead. The cabins are about an hour and a quarter away, so if you are not there to watch the race, plan your Lake Placid day for another date.
