From Philadelphia to the cabins
About 423 road miles, about seven hours. The route, the alternatives, the arrival and which cabin fits.
Philadelphia's City Hall is 423 road miles from the cabins by the quickest route, which crosses New Jersey on the Turnpike and joins the New York City route at Suffern for the Thruway, the Northway and the High Peaks. That is about seven hours of driving on a clear road. The other way, up the Northeast Extension and I-81 through Scranton, Binghamton, Syracuse and Watertown, is about 441 miles and takes about the same time on paper. This page sets the two side by side, with the stops, Pennsylvania's winter rules, the train, the flights and a plan for a Friday arrival.
Which route to take
Both distances run from City Hall to the cabins on OpenStreetMap's road network, and both driving times assume dry roads and no stops along the way.
| Route | Through New Jersey | Up I-81 |
|---|---|---|
| Road miles | 423 | About 441 |
| Driving time, clear road | About 7 hours | About 7 hours |
| Main roads | I-95, the New Jersey Turnpike, NJ 17, the Thruway, the Northway, NY 73, NY 86, NY 30 | I-76, I-476 (the Northeast Extension), I-81, US 11 |
| Cities on the way | Newark, Albany, Saratoga Springs | Allentown, Scranton, Binghamton, Syracuse, Watertown |
| Highest road | About 2,200 feet, on NY 73 near Upper Cascade Lake | About 1,870 feet, on the Northeast Extension in Luzerne County |
| Last supermarket before the cabins | Saranac Lake, 43 road miles short of the cabins | Malone, ten road miles short of the cabins |
On paper they are about 18 miles and a few minutes apart, so choose by conditions. The New Jersey way runs through Newark and the Bergen County suburbs and finishes on mountain roads. The I-81 way stays well west of New York City, has its high ground in Pennsylvania, and finishes with about 110 miles of US 11 through the villages of Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Franklin counties. North of Syracuse, I-81 crosses the lake-effect snow belt, so a lake-effect warning there is a reason to take the New Jersey way, and a winter storm over northeastern Pennsylvania a reason to take the other.
Through New Jersey
From City Hall, I-95 runs north through Northeast Philadelphia, Bensalem and Bristol Township to its interchange with the Pennsylvania Turnpike, whose direct flyover ramps opened in September 2018. The Turnpike's bridge carries you over the Delaware into Burlington Township, New Jersey, and the toll on that bridge is charged only to traffic heading back into Pennsylvania. At Mansfield you join the main line of the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs north about 55 miles past Robbinsville, East Windsor, Cranbury, East Brunswick, Edison, Woodbridge, Linden and Elizabeth to Newark.
At Newark the route takes the Turnpike's Western Spur through Kearny and past Rutherford, a short run of I-80 through Teaneck, and NJ 17 north through Hackensack, Paramus, Saddle River and Mahwah. It enters New York at Hillburn and reaches the Thruway at Suffern, 118 miles from City Hall. From there the drive is the one New Yorkers take, the Thruway to Albany, the Northway to exit 30 and NY 73 through Keene, set out stretch by stretch with its service areas on the drive from New York City; the drive from Albany has the stops on the Northway.
The New Jersey Turnpike has its own service areas on the northbound side: Woodrow Wilson at milepost 58.7, between interchanges 7 and 7A in Hamilton Township; Joyce Kilmer at 78.7, between 8A and 9 in East Brunswick; and Grover Cleveland at 92.9, between 11 and 12 in Woodbridge. Check the Turnpike Authority's list for fuel and food before you count on a particular one.
Up the Northeast Extension and I-81
Here is the I-81 way in stretches. The mileage and times are rounded, with no allowance for stops:
| Stretch | Roads | Places on the way | Road miles | About |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City Hall to Plymouth Meeting | The Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) and the Mid-County Expressway (I-476) | Lower Merion, Plymouth Township | 18 | 25 minutes |
| The Northeast Extension | I-476, the Pennsylvania Turnpike | Towamencin, Lower Macungie, Penn Forest Township, Bear Creek, Moosic, Scranton | 112 | 1 hour 40 minutes |
| Clarks Summit to Binghamton | I-81 | Greenfield Township, Lenox, New Milford, Great Bend, Kirkwood | 54 | 50 minutes |
| Binghamton to Syracuse | I-81 | Triangle, Lisle, Marathon, Cortland, Homer, Preble, Tully | 66 | 1 hour |
| Syracuse to Watertown | I-81 | Mattydale, Brewerton, Parish, Pulaski, Sandy Creek, Adams | 69 | 1 hour 5 minutes |
| Watertown to the cabins | US 11, then County Route 25 and town roads | Le Ray, Philadelphia, Antwerp, Gouverneur, Canton, Potsdam, Malone | 122 | 2 hours 10 minutes |
The Northeast Extension starts at Plymouth Meeting and ends at I-81 north of Scranton, at the interchange PennDOT numbers Exit 194. Since January 5, 2025, it has charged tolls at highway speed from overhead gantries that bill your E-ZPass tag or, without one, bill the plate through Toll By Plate at double the rate; the 2026 E-ZPass rate for a car is 7.3 cents a mile plus $1.13 a segment. Binghamton is about 263 road miles from the cabins, Syracuse 189 and Watertown 118, so by Watertown you are almost three-quarters of the way.
One variation is worth knowing. From Watertown, NY 3 runs east through Wilna, Pitcairn, Cranberry Lake and Tupper Lake, and NY 30 then heads north past Paul Smiths to the cabins. It adds about 42 miles and more than an hour, and suits a daylight drive with time for the Wild Center in Tupper Lake.
Plazas and stops on the I-81 way
| Stop | Where | What it has | Hours and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allentown service plaza | Northeast Extension, milepost 55.9, about 55 miles from City Hall | Sunoco fuel, a 7-Eleven, Roy Rogers, Nathan's Famous, Sbarro, Dunkin', Auntie Anne's, Cinnabon, Baskin-Robbins, fast EV chargers, a dog walk area | The plaza is open 24 hours, and the restaurants set their own hours; the last plaza for southbound drivers on the way home |
| Hickory Run service plaza | Milepost 86.1, about 85 miles from City Hall | Sunoco fuel, a 7-Eleven, Burger King, Auntie Anne's, Starbucks, a Tesla Supercharger and other EV chargers | Fuel and the store open 24 hours; the last plaza northbound |
| Southern Tier Welcome Center | I-81 northbound in Kirkwood, New York, between the state line and exit 1 | A Taste NY market with counter service, fast EV chargers, a playground and a pet area | 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from October through March, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April through September |
| Price Chopper, 53 Finney Boulevard | Malone, a block off US 11 at West Main Street | Groceries and beer | Lists 6 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days |
| Stewart's, 289 West Main Street | Malone, on US 11 at Finney Boulevard | Gas, diesel, 91-octane premium without ethanol, an ATM, restrooms | Check the shop's hours before a late arrival |
Between Kirkwood and Malone the route passes Binghamton, Syracuse and Watertown; the drive from Syracuse and the drive from Watertown name the stops on those stretches, and the groceries and supplies page lists what the cabin kitchens already hold.
Through Syracuse
Syracuse is in the middle of rebuilding its stretch of I-81. On September 22, 2026, the governor announced that the Federal Highway Administration had approved renumbering I-481, the highway around the city's east side, as the new I-81, and turning the old route through downtown into Business Loop 81. The state said drivers should not expect immediate changes while it plans the switch, which clears the way for removing the downtown viaduct. Follow the signs for I-81 north toward Watertown, and check 511NY for the current lane pattern before you leave.
North of the city, I-81 runs through Oswego County into the lake-effect belt east of Lake Ontario, where snow can come down in narrow, heavy bands. The winter driving guide explains what to do when a warning covers that stretch.
US 11 and Philadelphia, New York
At Watertown you leave the interstate for good. US 11 runs northeast through the Town of Le Ray and, about 340 road miles from City Hall, straight through the village of Philadelphia, in the Town of Philadelphia, Jefferson County. Then come Antwerp, Gouverneur, De Kalb, Canton and Potsdam, and US 11 turns east through Stockholm, Lawrence, Moira and Bangor into Malone, where the Stewart's sits on the route, the Price Chopper is a block up Finney Boulevard, and the route turns south toward the cabins. The drive from Watertown covers this stretch in detail, and getting to the cabins covers the last miles, where the host's directions work better than a phone map.
Winter in Pennsylvania and New York
Pennsylvania's high ground on this trip is the Northeast Extension, about 1,870 feet in Bear Creek Township, Luzerne County, and the state restricts its interstates in bad storms. During a January 2025 storm, PennDOT cut the speed limit to 45 mph on I-81 in Lackawanna, Luzerne and Susquehanna counties and, under the first tier of the state's weather restriction plan, kept cars towing trailers, motorhomes, buses and motorcycles off I-81 from the Turnpike to the New York line. Check 511PA before you leave and 511NY after the state line.
Pennsylvania law also requires drivers to clear ice and snow from the hood, trunk and roof within 24 hours after a storm ends. The fine is $50, and up to $1,500 if ice or snow comes off your car and strikes another vehicle or a person, causing death or serious injury.
The snow gets deeper as you go. On the 1991 to 2020 normals, Philadelphia's airport averages 7.1 inches of snow in January and about 23 inches a winter; Malone, the village ten road miles north of the cabins, gets about 22 inches in January and 95 over a whole winter. On the New Jersey way, NY 73 near Upper Cascade Lake is the highest road of either route.
Fall color and Thanksgiving week
The state's foliage report dated October 7 to 13, 2026, had Cortland, on I-81, at peak with 65 percent change, Binghamton at 45 percent and Syracuse at 25 percent, while Saranac Lake, on the last stretch of the New Jersey way, had reached peak. The fall foliage guide covers the timing near the cabins.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike's own forecasts show when not to travel. For Thanksgiving week 2025 it expected about 3.4 million travelers from Tuesday to Sunday, with the Wednesday the busiest day at 705,000 vehicles, Thanksgiving Day itself at 490,000, the Friday at 560,000 and the Sunday the lightest at 415,000, and it stopped construction and routine maintenance from 5 a.m. on the Tuesday to 11 p.m. on the Sunday. In 2026 Thanksgiving falls on November 26, so a start on the holiday itself or on Friday, November 27, misses the day that was busiest in 2025.
Splitting the drive
Seven hours is a long day after a week of work, and the drive splits easily. On the I-81 way, Binghamton is about 184 road miles from City Hall and Syracuse about 250, which leaves 189 miles for the morning; on the New Jersey way, Albany is about 235 miles out and 188 from the cabins. Check-in is after 4 p.m., so a night on the road suits a stay that starts on Saturday, and the drive from Syracuse picks up from there.
The train from 30th Street
No train reaches the cabins, but Amtrak's Adirondack gets you to Plattsburgh, 61 road miles away, and the connection from Philadelphia is early. Northeast Regional train 144 leaves William H. Gray III 30th Street Station at 6:10 a.m. every day and reaches Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station at 7:48 a.m., in time for the Adirondack's 8:15 a.m. departure, which reaches Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m. Plattsburgh's car rental counters are out at the airport, and the Avis counter there closes at 7 p.m., so book ahead and plan a taxi from the station. With the drive, that is a day of about twelve hours from 30th Street to the cabin door.
The way back is harder. The southbound Adirondack pulls out of Plattsburgh at 2:45 p.m. and gets to New York at 10:15 p.m., and on a Sunday the earliest Amtrak arrival at 30th Street after that is Keystone train 637, which leaves New York at 11:58 p.m. and is due in Philadelphia at 1:20 a.m. The timetables are from October 2026; check them for your dates.
Flying from Philadelphia
American flies nonstop from Philadelphia to Burlington, Vermont, 115 road miles from the cabins, where seven rental companies have desks at the airport; the drive from Burlington takes about two and a half hours around the top of Lake Champlain. Watertown International, 118 road miles from the cabins on US 11, also has Philadelphia flights: a November 2025 news report said American would keep flying 12 round trips a week between the two on 50-seat regional jets, under a federal contract that runs to January 31, 2027, so check the airline's current schedule. Plattsburgh's flights go to Florida, Myrtle Beach in season and Washington Dulles, not Philadelphia. The airports guide has the rest.
A Friday arrival
Check-in opens at 4 p.m., and checkout is by 11 a.m. With about seven hours at the wheel and three-quarters of an hour for fuel and food, leaving City Hall at 8 a.m. gets you to the cabin at about 4. To drive the last miles in daylight, work back from the sunset at the cabins:
| Departure day | Cabin sunset | Leave City Hall by |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday, November 26, 2026, Thanksgiving Day | 4:20 p.m. | About 8:35 a.m. |
| Friday, January 1, 2027, New Year's Day | 4:27 p.m. | About 8:40 a.m. |
| Friday, April 30, 2027 | 8:00 p.m. | About 12:15 p.m. |
| Friday, June 4, 2027 | 8:38 p.m. | About 12:55 p.m. |
| Friday, August 6, 2027 | 8:16 p.m. | About 12:30 p.m. |
| Friday, September 24, 2027 | 6:51 p.m. | About 11:05 a.m. |
A 5 p.m. start after work means reaching the cabins after midnight. If that is your only option, either break the trip on I-81 or tell the host your arrival time well ahead, and on the I-81 way remember that Malone's Price Chopper closes at 11 p.m.
What Philadelphia guests write about
Pennsylvania guests have left nine of the cabins' reviews, from Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Easton, Hershey, Mertztown and Mountainhome. The three from Philadelphia itself all date from January 2026, one for each cabin. The longest, for The Aviator, named the hot tub and the fire pit as the highlight and said:
We felt relaxed the moment we arrived.
A February 2022 guest from Easton wrote of The Modern Tiny Home, "Even the drive up was beautiful." A Hershey guest at the same cabin that September planned on cooking: "We like to get away and usually cook most of our own meals, easily done in the well-stocked kitchen." And a January 2025 guest from Mountainhome came to The Aviator for a weekend of cross-country skiing and wrote, "The house is tucked into the woods and our stay was very peaceful!" The cross-country skiing guide covers the trails, and the Titus Mountain guide the lifts three and a half road miles away. Every one of the three cabins sleeps four and has its own hot tub, fire pit and kitchen, and the listings rule out children under 10.
Heading home
Leave at the 11 a.m. checkout and you are back in Philadelphia in the early evening by either route. On the I-81 way, Hickory Run is the first Turnpike plaza southbound and Allentown, 30 miles on, the last one before the city; on the New Jersey way, the Thruway's southbound service areas are listed on the New York City page, and the Turnpike bridge over the Delaware charges as you cross back into Pennsylvania.
Questions
Which way is quicker from Philadelphia?
On a clear road they take about the same time: 423 road miles through New Jersey by the Turnpike, the Thruway and the Northway, about seven hours, or about 441 up the Northeast Extension and I-81, also about seven hours. Decide on the day: the New Jersey way ends on NY 73, the highest road of either route, and the I-81 way crosses the lake-effect belt north of Syracuse.
Where can we stop on the Northeast Extension?
At the Allentown service plaza, milepost 55.9, and Hickory Run, milepost 86.1, the last plaza northbound. Both have Sunoco fuel and a 7-Eleven open around the clock, plus food counters that keep their own hours and EV chargers. In New York, the Southern Tier Welcome Center in Kirkwood, just past the state line on I-81, has a Taste NY market.
Does Pennsylvania close I-81 in a snowstorm?
It restricts it. In a January 2025 storm PennDOT dropped the limit to 45 mph on I-81 in Lackawanna, Luzerne and Susquehanna counties and barred cars towing trailers, motorhomes, buses and motorcycles from I-81 between the Turnpike and the New York line. Check 511PA before you go, and see winter driving.
Can we take the train from Philadelphia?
Partway, with an early start. Northeast Regional 144 leaves 30th Street at 6:10 a.m. and reaches Moynihan Train Hall at 7:48 a.m., in time for the Adirondack at 8:15, which reaches Plattsburgh at 4:02 p.m. From there you need a rental car for the last 61 road miles. The return reaches New York at 10:15 p.m., so the trip home ends late.
Can we fly from Philadelphia?
Yes, with a car at the other end. American flies nonstop to Burlington, Vermont, 115 road miles from the cabins, where the airport has rental counters. Watertown, 118 road miles away on US 11, had 12 round trips a week to Philadelphia on American's regional jets in a November 2025 report; check the current schedule. Plattsburgh has no Philadelphia flights. See airports near the cabins.
Where do we buy groceries on the I-81 way?
In Malone, about ten road miles from the cabins. The Price Chopper at 53 Finney Boulevard lists its hours as 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day and sells beer, and the Stewart's at 289 West Main Street, on US 11, has gas, diesel and an ATM. Groceries and supplies has the other stores.
