Santa's Workshop at North Pole, New York

Santa's Workshop at North Pole, NY: its 1949 history, the 2026 holiday reopening, the Village of Lights, tickets, visiting with children and the drive from the cabins.

Santa's Workshop is the Christmas village at North Pole, a hamlet in the Town of Wilmington on NY 431, the road up Whiteface Mountain. It opened on July 1, 1949, and is counted among the first theme parks in the United States. It is about 55 road miles from the cabins by the shortest route, about an hour and a half. After a summer and fall closed for upgrades, it reopens for holiday weekends from late November 2026.

The 2026 season

The park stayed closed through its summer and fall seasons in 2026 while the village was scrubbed, painted and spruced up. It reopens for holiday weekends from late November 2026. The park's own site gives two starting dates, November 20 in one place and November 27 in another, so check the village hours page on the park's site before you pick a day.

As posted in early October, the winter weekends run on Saturdays and Sundays only, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the entrance closing at 2 p.m., through Sunday, December 20. The park warns that every date and hour can change without notice.

The Village of Lights, the park's evening program, is posted for five nights in December. Laid out week by week, the schedule as posted in early October looks like this:

Whichever start date holds, the Thanksgiving weekend, Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29, falls inside the posted season, so it is the safest late-November choice. The hours page lists the evenings as 4:30 to 8 p.m. with the last entry at 7, while the schedule on the home page closes the gate at 6:30, so plan to be through the gate by 6:30. In a normal year the village also opens for a summer season and a fall season; 2026 is a holiday-only year.

How it began

Julian Reiss, a Lake Placid businessman, had moved to Lake Placid with his family in 1925 to cure his tuberculosis in the mountain air. On family drives through the mountains in the 1940s he made up stories for his young daughter, Patti, and one was about a lost baby bear who stumbled on a village with Santa's house, elves and reindeer. When Patti asked to go there, Reiss set out to build it.

In 1947 he took the idea to Arto Monaco, an artist and designer in Upper Jay, whose sketches and designs gave it shape. Harold Fortune, also of Lake Placid, brought construction know-how, the site on Whiteface Mountain and a talent for promotion; the site was picked for being near the Whiteface Memorial Highway, already a major draw. Santa's Workshop opened on July 1, 1949. The first day drew 212 visitors, mostly adults, and there were no rides yet: the attractions were Santa, the frozen North Pole and a set of shops, many of which are still there. Visitors paid the 76-cent entrance fee on the way out, along with their purchases, which were tallied on a shopping card tied to them with string.

The press took it from there. Within weeks of the opening, more than 700 daily newspapers in the United States and Canada had carried photos and stories about it, and Pathé newsreels showed it in movie theaters. On September 2, 1951, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, more than 14,000 people came, the park's single-day record. When visitors were staying only an hour, the park added live shows and rides, and Monaco's drawings show the Christmas Tree ride converted from a helicopter ride and the bobsleds from an airplane ride. The park turned 75 in 2024.

Arto Monaco

The man who gave the village its look was born in 1913, spent his first eight years in Elizabethtown and grew up in Upper Jay, where his father turned a general store into an Italian restaurant and later opened a tavern across the road. In the late 1930s and early 1940s Monaco worked in Hollywood, moving among MGM, Warner Brothers, Paramount and Disney, then joined the Army in 1941. After Santa's Workshop he built a children's park of his own, the Land of Makebelieve, on the Ausable River behind the family restaurant in Upper Jay. It opened in the spring of 1954; the river flooded it again and again, and Monaco closed it in 1979. He died in November 2003, a few days after his 90th birthday.

The post office and the North Pole postmark

On December 16, 1953, North Pole, NY, became a Rural Postal Station. The post office in the village is a real U.S. post office, and the elves put a special holiday postmark on the cards and letters mailed there. Bring your stamped Christmas cards and mail them from the village.

The post office is also where you ask for a re-entry pass on a daytime visit, if your family cannot see everything in one day. If you cannot make the trip at all, the park sells Letters from Santa: a letter on Santa's own stationery with the child's name, mailed in a custom envelope from the North Pole post office. Order before Thanksgiving for the best chance of delivery before Christmas; the letters go out in weekly batches by U.S. mail. In early October 2026 the order page showed no products yet, so check back in November.

The park's traditions

The Nativity Pageant, the story of the first Christmas, was first staged in 1954 on a hillside in the village decked with flowers, and it is still part of the Village of Lights evenings. In 1953 Santa and his reindeer team appeared in New York City's Thanksgiving Day Parade and traveled to Washington for the Pageant for Peace. In 1973 the park started Christmas Preview, a package weekend for families, which it later renamed the Yuletide Family Weekends.

Operation Toylift began with Reiss himself at the controls of his own plane, flying toys and gifts to children in need in northern New York and Vermont. Within six years, with a C-46 aircraft called the Silver Sleigh provided by Esso Standard Oil of New Jersey, Toylift was making 34 stops at major airports in more than 13 states, the District of Columbia and two Canadian provinces, and delivering more than ten tons of presents to orphaned children.

What is in the village

The village is laid out for small children. Santa's house is the center of it: Santa greets every guest who comes in, so bring the Christmas list, and the photo shop sells pictures of the visit and frames for them. At the reindeer barn each of Santa's reindeer has its name over its stall, and in past winters visitors have been able to pet them. The frozen North Pole itself stays frosty all year.

  • Saint Nicholas Chapel, a small chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, with pipe organ music and a Nativity set.
  • The Bake Shop and the Candy Shop, for treats made the way Santa likes them, homemade chocolates and fudge.
  • The Toy Shop, where children can play with the toys, color and go down a slide.
  • The Candle Shop, the Hat Shop, which puts a child's name on a Santa hat, and the Blacksmith Shop, with the forge where the reindeer shoes are made.
  • World of Christmas, the gift shop for family keepsakes.
  • Santa's Memory Lane, with signs, pictures, old merchandise and clothing from the park's years since 1949.
  • Tannenbaum, Santa's talking Christmas tree.

Not every show runs every season, and the shows depend on the weather. The village's sit-down restaurant, the Northern Lights, serves Dinner with Santa on the Village of Lights evenings; ask at the gate what food is serving on a daytime visit.

The rides

The park's attractions are built for children 48 inches tall and under, and some rides have height and weight limits:

  • Candy Cane Express, Santa's own train, takes riders through the woods, and the park's maintenance staff count it the most popular ride.
  • Santa's Bobsleds are for riders under 48 inches and under 75 pounds.
  • Santa's Sleigh Coaster is a five-car mini coaster for all ages.
  • The Christmas Tree Ride puts the rider at the controls of an ornament that circles the tree.
  • The Ferris wheel is a children's wheel with six cars that rises 20 feet, for riders under 48 inches and 75 pounds.
  • The Christmas Carousel has 20 reindeer and two sleighs; the reindeer have height and weight limits.

In winter the rides run when the weather allows. In past winters the bobsleds, the ornament ride around the tree, the train and the reindeer carousel have all run, but on a bitter or stormy day, call the park before you drive.

The Village of Lights

On the five December evenings the park becomes a winter village of lights. There is caroling, a roaring fire in the fire pit, the shops are open, the reindeer are out, Santa takes last requests, and the Nativity Pageant is presented on the village hillside. In 2021 visitors toasted s'mores over the open fire and went home with Santa hats. The sun sets about 4:17 to 4:20 p.m. on those dates and it is close to dark by about 4:50, so the lights are on in darkness for most of the evening.

Village of Lights tickets are sold in person at the park only, not online. As posted in October 2026 they cost $24.95 for everyone 2 and older, children under 2 get in free, and the evening ticket does not include daytime admission or dinner. Dinner with Santa runs on the same five dates from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the Northern Lights Restaurant, with dinner served until 5. It was posted at $69.95 a person plus fees and New York tax, includes the Village of Lights and early entry to see Santa in his house, and needs a reservation; places are limited.

Yuletide Family Weekends

The Yuletide Family Weekends are the park's package for families with children from 2 to 10. A weekend includes two days at Santa's Workshop with the rides and character shows, two evening events, a Trim the Tree Party and 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, a visit from Santa at the lodge, a color photograph of the family with Santa, a present chosen by Santa for each child, and a welcome package of treats and gifts. The 2026 weekends are November 20 to 22, November 27 to 29, December 4 to 6, December 11 to 13 and December 18 to 20.

The package comes with lodging at The Hungry Trout or the KOA Holiday in Wilmington, or in a no-lodging version. Prices depend on the size of the party, the lodging and the room, and reservations are by phone at (518) 946-2212, with a $400 deposit when you book.

Tickets

The park sells three kinds of tickets. General admission covers a daytime visit and is sold online through the link on the park's tickets page; as posted in October 2026 it costs $39.95 for everyone 2 and older, and a season pass is $99.95. It does not include breakfast, the Village of Lights or special programs. Village of Lights tickets are sold only in person at the park and do not include daytime admission, and Dinner with Santa needs a reservation and includes the Village of Lights.

Children under 2 are free, and New York sales tax is added to the posted prices. Prices can change, so check the park's tickets page before you go.

Visiting with small children

  • Ages. The rides are sized for children 48 inches and under, and the family weekends are designed around ages 2 to 10. Taller children will be too big for several of the rides.
  • Timing. The daytime entrance closes at 2 p.m. and the park at 3:30, so aim to arrive near the 10 a.m. opening and see Santa first.
  • Clothes. Dress children for standing outside for hours. In nearby Lake Placid, December averages a high of 32°F and a low of 12°F, and November a high of 44°F and a low of 25°F. Boots, snow pants, mittens and a hat that covers the ears are the minimum; see what to pack.
  • Darkness. The sun sets about 4:20 p.m. from late November to the solstice. A daytime visit ends in daylight; the Village of Lights is a night out.
  • Breaks. If you need to leave and come back, ask at the post office for a re-entry pass.
  • Mail. Pack stamped cards and the addresses, so the children can mail them with the North Pole postmark.
  • The ride home. It is about an hour and a half each way, so pack snacks and water.

The cabins themselves are not suitable for children under 10, per their listings' house rules, so a family with small children will need to stay elsewhere for this trip.

The drive from the cabins

There are two ways to the park. The shortcut through Bloomingdale is about 11 miles shorter, and the route through Lake Placid stays on state highways once you reach NY 30. In good conditions they take about the same time.

RouteRoadsRoad milesTime in good conditions
The shortcutCounty roads to NY 30; NY 30 south to Paul Smiths; NY 86 to Gabriels; County Route 55 to Bloomingdale; River Road, Franklin Falls Road and Gillespie Drive to NY 431, then down NY 431 to the parkAbout 55About an hour and a half
By way of Lake PlacidCounty roads to NY 30; NY 30 south to Paul Smiths; NY 86 through Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, then east through Wilmington Notch to Wilmington; NY 431 for a mile and a halfAbout 66About an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters

On the shortcut, Gillespie Drive meets NY 431 about a mile and a quarter above the park, and you drive down to it. Map apps may send you either way. The longer route passes Saranac Lake at about 43 miles and Lake Placid at about 52, and reaches the park from Wilmington, where it sits a mile and a half up NY 431 from the junction with NY 86. From Lake Placid's Main Street the park is about 14 road miles. For the towns on the way, see Saranac Lake and Paul Smiths.

Winter driving on the way

A December day at the park is a day of short light. The sun sets about 4:20 p.m. and it is close to dark by about 4:50, so after a daytime visit you will drive at least the last part of the way home in the dark, and after the Village of Lights you will start an hour-and-a-half drive at 7 or 8 p.m.

Check 511NY, the state transportation department's free travel service, before you set out and again before you start home. By calling 511 or on its website, it shows a color-coded map of which state roads are snow covered, ice covered, wet or dry, and in winter it updates those reports at least every four hours and more often during storms. Past NY 30, the route through Lake Placid is all state highway, so in snow take that one, give the trip two hours, and fill the tank before you leave. Read the winter driving guide before a December trip.

Pairing it with Lake Placid or Whiteface

Lake Placid is about 14 road miles from the park and on the way home by the longer route. Leave the park at closing and you can be on Main Street by about 4 p.m. for an early dinner. In winter the speed skating oval beside the Olympic Center opens for public skating several nights a week when no competition or training is on, with skates for rent. The Olympic Center also holds the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. See Lake Placid's Olympic venues and Lake Placid and Whiteface.

Lake Placid's Holiday Village Stroll is set for December 11 to 13, 2026, the same weekend as the Village of Lights on Sunday, December 13. Recent strolls have included a family skating party at the Olympic Center's 1932 rink, photos with Santa and a tree lighting with carols at Mid's Park. The events calendar has the rest of the season.

High Falls Gorge, on NY 86 in Wilmington Notch, is about six road miles from the park, on the way to Lake Placid. It is open five days a week, Fridays through Tuesdays, and in winter its half-mile walk over the falls comes with free traction for your boots. Confirm its winter opening date on its site before you plan an evening around it.

Whiteface's ski area is about six road miles from the park by NY 431 and NY 86. In 2025 it opened on November 15, the earliest in the state that season, and planned to run daily from November 28. A family can split a day: the skiers take Whiteface, the others take Santa's, and everyone meets for the drive home. The toll road to the summit, which starts above the park, is closed in winter; its 2026 season ends on October 12. Closer to the cabins, Titus Mountain is three and a half road miles away.

Questions

When does Santa's Workshop reopen in 2026?

It stayed closed through the summer and fall of 2026 for upgrades and reopens for holiday weekends from late November 2026. The park's site gives both November 20 and November 27 as the start. Its hours page lists Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the entrance closing at 2 p.m., through December 20. Check that page before you go.

How far is Santa's Workshop from the cabins?

About 55 road miles by the shortcut through Bloomingdale and over Franklin Falls Road, or about 66 by state highways through Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Wilmington. In good conditions both take about an hour and a half, a little more through the villages; in snow, take the Lake Placid route and allow two hours. See winter driving.

When is the Village of Lights in 2026?

The park posts five evenings: Sundays December 6, 13 and 20, Monday December 21 and Tuesday December 22, from 4:30 p.m. The last entry is listed as 7 p.m. on one page and 6:30 on another, so arrive by 6:30. Tickets, posted at $24.95 for ages 2 and up, are sold only in person at the park, and children under 2 get in free.

How much are tickets?

As posted in October 2026, general admission is $39.95 for everyone 2 and older and a season pass $99.95. The Village of Lights is $24.95, sold in person only, and Dinner with Santa, which includes the Village of Lights, is $69.95 plus fees with a reservation. Children under 2 are free, and New York sales tax is extra. Check the park's tickets page before you go.

What ages is Santa's Workshop best for?

Young children. The rides are built for children 48 inches tall and under, two of them have a 75-pound limit, and the Yuletide Family Weekends are designed for families with children from 2 to 10. Children under 2 get in free. Older children still get Santa's house, the reindeer and the post office.

Can you mail letters with a North Pole postmark?

Yes. North Pole became a Rural Postal Station on December 16, 1953, and the post office in the village puts a special holiday postmark on cards mailed there, so bring them stamped. If you cannot visit, the park's Letters from Santa are mailed from the North Pole post office; order before Thanksgiving for the best chance of delivery before Christmas.

Can we combine Santa's Workshop with Lake Placid or Whiteface?

Yes. Lake Placid's Main Street is about 14 road miles from the park, and the Whiteface ski area about six. In 2025 Whiteface opened on November 15 and planned daily operation from November 28, so skiers can take the mountain while the rest of the party visits Santa's. See Lake Placid and Whiteface.
