A Summer Weekend at the Cabins

Two summer nights at the cabins near Malone: a lake morning, a short hike, the town, the fire pit and the stars, with drive times and the fair.

Summer at the cabins runs on long evenings. From June into late July the sun sets after 8:30 p.m., so a morning on a lake and an afternoon on a trail still leave hours for the grill, the fire pit and the hot tub. Meacham Lake's beach is about 20 road miles south, three short hikes start within ten road miles, and Malone, about ten miles north, has the groceries and a village pool, with the Almanzo Wilder Farm a few miles east of town. Below is a plan for two nights in June, July or August, with a third day for long weekends, the drive, the shopping and the packing; the summer page covers the season month by month.

When to plan a summer weekend

The summer weekends run from early June to Labor Day. Here are Malone's 1991-2020 normals, with the sunset at the cabins in the middle of each month in 2027:

Adirondack chairs around the fire pit on the lawn
Adirondack chairs around the fire pit on the lawn
MonthSunset mid-monthAverage highAverage lowAverage rain
June8:44 p.m.73°F54°F4.03 inches
July8:40 p.m.77°F58°F4.26 inches
August8:03 p.m.75°F55°F4.41 inches

Pack a sweater whatever the month: a summer night here runs about 20 degrees cooler than the afternoon. Most of the rain comes in small amounts: June averages about 15 days with measurable rain, and only about three days a month bring half an inch or more. June has the longest days of the year, and early June has the tail of black fly season, which runs from mid-May into late June; the bug guide has what works. July is the warmest month, with the warmest stretch usually in its middle weeks, and August is the wettest of the three.

Long weekends in summer 2027

Juneteenth falls on a Saturday, June 19, so federal offices close on Friday, June 18. Independence Day is a Sunday and is observed on Monday, July 5. Labor Day is Monday, September 6. For guests from Canada, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day in Quebec (June 24) and Canada Day (July 1) both fall on a Thursday, so one day off makes a four-day weekend, and the Civic Holiday outside Quebec is Monday, August 2.

The darkest weekends

Check the moon before you book if the stars matter to you. The new moons of summer 2027 fall on Friday, June 4, Saturday, July 3, and Monday, August 2, so the Independence Day weekend and the first weekend of August come with the moon out of the evening sky. Full darkness, the end of astronomical twilight, comes at about 11:15 p.m. in early July and 10:25 p.m. in early August. The stargazing post has the full moon calendar and what to look for overhead.

The Friday drive up

Check-in at all three cabins is after 4 p.m., and summer light gives a Friday arrival plenty of room: at the end of June it stays light enough to read the road until about 9:20 p.m. These are the usual starting points; each city has a full route page under drive from.

From Quebec, the NY 30 port at Trout River is shut to southbound cars until about May 2028 while it is rebuilt, so the choice is Chateaugay by day or Fort Covington and Champlain at any hour. A summer Friday makes the short way easy: leave Montreal by early afternoon and you are through Chateaugay well before 6 p.m. Churubusco, the other small crossing, closes at 4 p.m. The border guide lists the documents each traveler needs, children included.

From Burlington, the Grand Isle ferry to Plattsburgh comes out about even with the drive around the lake by day, and a car and driver paid $12.25 each way in 2026. From Albany and New York City, summer is the season for the High Peaks road: exit 30 off the Northway, NY 73 through Keene to Lake Placid, NY 86 to Paul Smiths and NY 30 north past Meacham Lake, timed so the mountains go by in daylight.

The last miles are county and town roads and a private gravel drive, and phone maps do not always pick the same way, so follow the host's directions; getting to the cabins has them in detail. If you arrive late, The Modern Tiny Home and The Aviator keep quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., so unload quietly and save the fire for Saturday.

Groceries in Malone on the way in

Malone is the last stop for supplies, about ten road miles north of the cabins, and its two big stores keep long summer hours: Price Chopper on Finney Boulevard and the Walmart Supercenter on Route 11 are both open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day. ALDI is on Route 11 as well. Price Chopper offers curbside pickup, so a passenger can place the order on the road. The groceries and supplies guide lists the rest, including the pharmacies.

Beer and cider come from the grocery store. Wine and spirits come only from a liquor store in New York. Two in Malone are The Jug Store at 44 Finney Boulevard and Harison Wine & Liquor at 632 East Main Street, which has posted Friday and Saturday hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The listings do not mention firewood, so buy it close to the cabins: New York bars untreated firewood from other states, and untreated New York wood may not travel more than 50 miles from where it was grown. The Meacham Lake campground sells firewood and ice, and Runnings on West Main Street in Malone stocks fire-starting supplies.

For two nights the list is short:

  • Breakfast for two mornings, and coffee, since there is no quick coffee run from the cabins.
  • A picnic lunch for the lake on Saturday, and a cooler to carry it.
  • One dinner for the grill, and one night out or a second grill dinner.
  • Marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers if you plan on s'mores at the fire pit.
  • Your favorite spices and oils; the kitchens list pots, pans, oil, salt and pepper among the basics.

Friday evening at the cabin

Unpack, turn on the air conditioning if the afternoon was hot (all three cabins have it), and light the grill. The Modern Pine has a large screened room on its deck and a round steel fire pit at the edge of the woods. The Aviator has a large open deck with table and chairs and a smokeless steel fire pit on the lawn. The Modern Tiny Home has a big ring of stacked stone for its fire pit, a small screened corner on its deck, and a short trail to an observation deck over the pond. Every cabin has its own hot tub and its own fire pit with Adirondack chairs.

The fire pit

New York allows a backyard fire less than three feet high and four feet across, burning only charcoal or clean, untreated wood, and never left unattended. Keep a bucket of water by the pit, light it with a match, never lighter fluid, and before bed drown it, stir the ashes and drown it again until they are cool to the back of your hand. The fire pit guide covers burn bans and how to build the fire.

The hot tub and the stars

Every cabin has a private hot tub, and The Modern Pine lists its tub as open around the clock. Keep the cover on whenever nobody is in it, and get out at the first rumble of thunder. The best soak of the night comes after full dark. Switch off the deck lights, put the phones away, and give your eyes about half an hour to adjust; a red light keeps them adjusted if you need one. From a dark place in July and August, the Milky Way shows as a pale band across the sky, brightest low in the south toward Scorpius and the Teapot of Sagittarius, where the center of the galaxy lies.

Concerts in the Park

If you reach Malone by six on a Friday in July, catch the chamber of commerce's free Concerts in the Park on Arsenal Green, the village green on East Main Street. The chamber holds them every Friday night in July; in 2026 they ran from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring folding chairs, then shop and drive on with the evening still light.

Saturday morning on a lake

The cabins have no canoes or kayaks, so the lake you choose depends on whether you bring a boat.

Meacham Lake

Meacham Lake is the easy choice, about 20 road miles and 35 minutes south on NY 30. The state campground along its north and west shores has a sand beach, a picnic area, a boat launch and a playground, and day visitors pay a fee per car at the booth, $8 in 2026, during a season that ran from May 15 to the Columbus Day weekend. The campground lists rowboat and canoe rentals, and one 2026 listing adds kayaks and paddleboards; ask at the booth. Since 2023 DEC has run unsupervised swimming at all its campground beaches, Meacham included: there is no lifeguard on the stand, so swim from the marked beach area, keep an eye on everyone in the water, and be out by half an hour before sunset, when swimming ends for the day. Dogs are not allowed on the beach or in the day-use area. The Meacham Lake guide has the launches, the paddling routes and the loons.

The Chateaugay Lakes

For a big lake and your own boat, drive about 50 minutes east to the Chateaugay Lakes. Upper Chateaugay Lake covers 2,594 acres with about 18 miles of shoreline, and the Narrows join it to Lower Chateaugay Lake, which lies in Bellmont, the same town as the cabins. The only public launch is the state ramp on NY 374 at the Narrows, about 34 road miles from the cabins, with parking for 25 cars and trailers. The Lower lake is the one for wakeboarding and tubing, and the lakes hold a boat parade every Fourth of July. Nobody rents boats there, so this is a morning for guests who bring their own. Merrill's Ice Cream & Grill is on NY 374, and the Chateaugay Lakes guide has the fishing, the history and High Falls Park on the way home.

Mountain View Lake and Lake Titus

With your own canoe or kayak, Mountain View Lake, about six road miles from the cabins, has a car-top launch on Mountain View Avenue near the bridge, and a narrow channel leads from it into Indian Lake. Lake Titus, about nine miles away, has private shores and no public launch with parking, so most visitors see it from the ledge at Elephant's Head. The guide to the three lakes has the details.

Renting a boat

No livery rents boats on Lake Titus, the Chateaugay Lakes or in Malone. Beyond Meacham's campground, the nearest outfitters are in Saranac Lake, about 43 road miles south, where Adirondack Lakes & Trails Outfitters on Church Street and St. Regis Canoe Outfitters on Dorsey Street rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboards by the day, with paddles, life jackets and the straps to carry the boat on your car. The canoe and kayak rentals guide compares them.

New York requires a life jacket on board for every person, and anyone under 12 must wear one. Every boat, canoes and kayaks included, must be cleaned, drained and dried before it goes into a new lake. When you hear thunder, head for shore.

A short hike

Three short trails start within ten road miles of the cabins, each a morning or an afternoon.

TrailFrom the cabinsDistance and climbWhat you get
Owls HeadAbout 4 road miles, 10 minutes1.3 miles each way, 725 to 750 feet upOpen ledges over Indian Lake and Mountain View Lake, with Whiteface far to the south
High FallsAbout 5 road miles, 15 minutesAbout 0.75 mile each way, nearly levelA curtain of water about 30 feet high on the Salmon River
Elephant's HeadAbout 9 road miles0.8 mile each way, 320 feet upA lookout over Lake Titus and Titus Mountain

Owls Head is the best view for the effort, about two hours round trip. Its trailhead on Station Road has no sign; just past the one-mile mark an old iron mine shaft marks the only steep pitch. The Owls Head guide gives the landmarks.

High Falls suits a hot afternoon or a mixed group: a walk through the woods beside the river on a blue-marked trail from Barnesville Road, a gravel road. Elephant's Head is the shortest climb, about twenty minutes to the top, and the trailhead sits at the end of a 1.5-mile gravel road off NY 30 that is hard on low cars. Both are in the Titusville Mountain State Forest; the state forest guide covers their trailheads and a fourth, steeper trail, the Ledges. For longer days, hiking near Malone lists the longer climbs, fire towers included.

Check for ticks after any of them. Deer tick nymphs are out from mid-May to mid-August and are about the size of a poppy seed, and a shower within two hours of coming indoors lowers the risk of Lyme disease.

Saturday afternoon in Malone

After lunch, Malone is about twenty minutes north, with a swim, a river walk and a farm tour.

The village pool

The village opened a new pool at Malone Memorial Recreation Park in 2025, near the Duane Street entrance. It is 20 meters long and five feet deep at its deepest, and a splash pad has joined it. On the 2026 pool calendar, open swim ran from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday; the Rec Park's Facebook page posts the current schedule. The park's 2026 summer calendars also invited visitors to borrow sports equipment, kayaks and bikes, with every activity listed as free. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the park, which centers on Rotary Lake and has a paved loop trail of about a mile.

The Salmon River

The Salmon River runs north through the middle of the village. The River View Loop, a 1.4-mile walk that crosses the river three times, starts at East Main and Pearl streets. On the east bank in the center of the village stand the roofless walls of the Horton Grist Mill, built in 1853 of sandstone quarried in Malone and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Anglers 16 and older need a New York license; in spring 2026 the state stocked about 24,000 brown and rainbow trout in the river's Town of Malone stretch. The Salmon River guide has the public fishing areas and the parks along the banks.

The Wilder farm

The Almanzo Wilder Farm in Burke, about 13 road miles from the cabins, is Almanzo Wilder's boyhood home and the setting of Farmer Boy, the book his wife Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about his childhood. The house, the rebuilt barns and the schoolhouse open only on a guided tour. In 2026 tours ran at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, until August 30, and then on weekends through September; the 2 p.m. tour fits a Saturday afternoon. Adults paid $16 and youth 6 to 16 paid $9. The visitor center is free, and pets are not allowed on the grounds. See the Wilder farm guide, and a Farmer Boy day around Malone for a whole day built around the book.

Ice cream

Bokie's Drive-In on Route 11 has served burgers and ice cream since 1956, with posted hours to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and both Stewart's Shops in the village have ice cream counters. In 2026 a Franklin County Ice Cream Trail punch card covered stands from Malone to Chateaugay and Saranac Lake.

Dinner on Saturday

Saturday is the night to eat out. These hours were posted in the fall of 2026 and summer schedules can differ, so call ahead and book a table.

Trailside, the closest, is a rebuilt Adirondack roadside bar and grill with outdoor seating, burgers and wings, and live music on some nights. The where to eat guide covers breakfast places, pizza, takeout and Saranac Lake.

The Franklin County Fair in August

If your weekend falls in early or mid August, the Franklin County Fair may be running in Malone; the county has held its fair since the 1850s. The 2027 dates had not been posted in October 2026. Recent fairs ran from August 3 to 11 in 2024, August 2 to 10 in 2025 and August 8 to 16 in 2026, each opening on a Saturday, so watch the fair's website from spring.

The fairgrounds are at 606 East Main Street, about ten road miles from the cabins. A fair evening can take the place of dinner out. In 2026 the grandstand ran a demolition derby on the opening Saturday, a rodeo, truck and tractor pulls and a stunt-driving show during the week, and concerts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Concert tickets bought online included admission to the fair, and tickets bought at the gate on show day did not. Children 12 and under have been admitted free, and dogs are not allowed on the grounds during fair week. The Wilder farm is about four road miles from the fairgrounds, and Farmer Boy has a chapter about this fair. The fair guide has its history, the livestock shows and the grandstand.

Other weekends worth planning around

  • Independence Day. The Chateaugay Lakes hold a boat parade every Fourth of July. In 2027 the holiday falls on a Sunday, with the new moon the night before, so a fire and a late soak on Saturday come with the darkest sky of the month.
  • IRONMAN Lake Placid. The race is on Sunday, July 25, 2027, with a 6:30 a.m. swim start in Mirror Lake and road closures from 5 a.m. Plan any Lake Placid day for another weekend.
  • The Perseids. The meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12-13, 2027. The moon sets at about 2 a.m. that night, and the darkest hours come after it.
  • The Malone Fly-In. The chamber of commerce has held a Fly-In Festival at Malone-Dufort Airport, about 12 road miles from the cabins, every late summer since 2021, with airplane and helicopter rides for a fee; the chamber's events page posts each year's weekend. It suits a stay at The Aviator, with its aviation prints.

Sunday morning and the drive home

Checkout is before 11 a.m. at all three cabins, so Sunday is a slow breakfast and one last stop on the way out. For breakfast out, Trailside in Owls Head opens at 9 a.m. on Sundays, Foothills Lodge & Cafe on Church Place in Malone serves from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day, and The Tailwagger Cafe on Brand Road opens from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. Donovan's and The Pines are closed on Sundays; Bokie's is open from 11 a.m.

For a last outing, Owls Head fits before checkout if you are on the trail by 8. Heading south by NY 30, Elephant's Head is right on the way: the gravel road leaves NY 30 about two miles south of the turn from County Route 25. Heading east toward Chateaugay or Plattsburgh, the Wilder farm in Burke makes a last stop, with Sunday tours at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. in 2026.

Going back into Canada, you can use the Trout River crossing on NY 30, since only the U.S.-bound side is closed. The Canadian offices at Trout River and at Chateaugay are both open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fort Covington and Champlain are open around the clock. Before a long drive south, check 511NY, the state's free road information service, on the web, in the app or by dialing 511.

A third day on a long weekend

On a Juneteenth, Independence Day or Labor Day weekend, add one of these.

  • Lake Placid. About 52 road miles south, an hour and a quarter. The public beach at the south end of Mirror Lake has been open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily in summer, the Olympic Museum in the Olympic Center opens daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway climbs toward the 4,867-foot summit of Whiteface, open daily from 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from mid-May to the Columbus Day weekend. See the Lake Placid and Whiteface guide.
  • Saranac Lake. About 43 road miles, roughly an hour. Rent a canoe on Lake Flower in the middle of the village, swim at Lake Colby's beach, which has had lifeguards and posted hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and eat in town on the way home. See Saranac Lake and Paul Smiths.
  • The Adirondack Rail Trail. The old railroad from Lake Placid to Tupper Lake became a 34-mile trail, finished in the fall of 2025, with a firm stone-dust surface, two paved miles in Saranac Lake and a typical grade of 2 percent. Start at Saranac Lake's Union Depot, about 43 road miles from the cabins and about ten trail miles from Lake Placid. Sara-Placid Sled & Spoke and Silver Birch Cycles in Saranac Lake rent bikes, and shuttles let you ride one way. See the Adirondack Rail Trail guide.
  • The Wild Center in Tupper Lake. About 57 road miles, an hour and a half, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from late May to mid-October. Timed tickets are sold online and weekends sell out, so buy before a holiday Monday; dogs stay home. See the Wild Center guide.

For a whole week instead of a weekend, a week at the cabins lays out a summer week day by day.

What to pack

  • Swimsuits, towels for the beach, and sandals or water shoes.
  • Insect repellent with DEET, picaridin or IR3535, and clothes treated with permethrin for the trails; permethrin goes on clothing, never on skin.
  • Long sleeves and a warm layer for the fire pit and the late soak.
  • A rain jacket; August is the wettest month of the year here.
  • A headlamp or flashlight with a red setting for the walk to the fire pit and for stargazing.
  • Sunscreen, hats and water bottles for the beach and the ledges.
  • If you bring a canoe or kayak: a life jacket for each person, a whistle and a white light, which New York requires on paddlecraft.
  • A New York fishing license for anglers 16 and older; in 2026 a one-day license cost $5 for residents and $10 for nonresidents.
  • Passports or other border documents for everyone crossing from Canada.
  • For the dog, a leash and a plan: dogs are not allowed at Meacham's beach, in the Malone recreation park, at the Wilder farm, at The Wild Center or at the fair. The dog guide has the places that welcome them.

The house rules that matter

  • Children 10 and up. The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home listings say they are not suitable for children under 10, and all three listings carry Airbnb's flag that they are not suitable for children and infants. A summer family weekend here suits children 10 and older and teenagers, two of whom can take the bunk room. See family cabins.
  • No parties. All three cabins sleep four and allow no parties or events. At The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home the guest who books must be 25 or older, with picture ID and a guest list at booking.
  • Groups of eight. The Modern Pine and The Aviator share one property, so two couples or two families can book both and share the evenings; see group stays.
  • Quiet hours. The Modern Tiny Home and The Aviator keep quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., which on a summer night means voices down at the fire pit after ten.
  • Food and garbage. The listings ask that no food or garbage be left outside, for the sake of the wildlife; keep it in the cabin or the containers provided.
  • Pets. House-trained pets under 25 pounds are welcome for a fee (a 25-pound limit and one pet at The Aviator), and a pet is never left alone in the cabin.
  • No hunting. The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home listings bar hunting on the property.

The cabin comparison sets the three side by side.

If you need help

The nearest hospital is UVM Health Alice Hyde Medical Center at 133 Park Street in Malone, about ten and a half road miles from the cabins, with an emergency department open 24 hours. At 134 Park Street, its walk-in clinic sees children, teens and adults with minor illnesses and injuries from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, without an appointment. On a summit or the water in a thunderstorm, get down or ashore, and wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before you go back out. The health and safety page has the emergency numbers and the pharmacies.

Questions

What is the best month for a summer weekend at the cabins?

July is the warmest month, with Malone averaging a high of 77°F, and the black flies of early June are mostly gone by then. Late June has the longest evenings, with sunset near 8:45 p.m., and August is the month of the Franklin County Fair and the Perseid meteors. Every summer month has nights about 20 degrees cooler than the afternoon, so pack a warm layer.

Do the cabins have canoes or kayaks?

No. The listings include no boats, bikes or paddling gear. Meacham Lake's state campground, about 35 minutes south, lists rowboat and canoe rentals, and outfitters in Saranac Lake, about an hour away, rent canoes, kayaks and paddleboards by the day with life jackets included. See the canoe and kayak rentals guide.

Where can we swim near the cabins?

The nearest beach is at the Meacham Lake state campground, about 20 road miles south. Since 2023 DEC campground beaches have had no lifeguards, so swim from the marked area and be out by half an hour before sunset. In Malone, the village pool at Memorial Recreation Park held open swims from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday on its 2026 calendar. The lakes nearest the cabins have private shores and no public beach.

Can we have a campfire at the cabins in summer?

Yes. Each cabin has its own fire pit with Adirondack chairs. New York allows fires under three feet high and four feet across, burning only charcoal or clean, untreated wood, and they must never be left unattended. Buy firewood near the cabins, since untreated wood may not travel more than 50 miles. The fire pit guide has the details.

Can we bring our children on a summer weekend?

Children 10 and older, yes. The Modern Pine and The Modern Tiny Home listings say they are not suitable for children under 10, and all three carry Airbnb's flag that they are not suitable for children and infants. Each cabin's bunk room suits two older children or teenagers. See family cabins.

When is the Franklin County Fair in 2027?

The 2027 dates had not been posted in October 2026. The last three fairs opened on a Saturday in early August and ran nine days: August 3 to 11 in 2024, August 2 to 10 in 2025 and August 8 to 16 in 2026. Check the fair's website in spring, and see the fair guide.

How far is the drive from Montreal on a summer Friday?

About 75 road miles by the Chateaugay crossing, which is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., or 93 miles by Fort Covington, which is open around the clock. The Trout River crossing on NY 30 is closed to U.S.-bound traffic until about May 2028. Leave Montreal by early afternoon to use Chateaugay. See the border guide.
